Weekend reading from Pedagogy of the Oppressed

"In order for the struggle [of fully humanizing ourselves and others] to have meaning, the oppressed must not, in seeking to regain their humanity, become in turn oppressors of the oppressors, but rather restorers of the humanity of both."

"But almost always, during the initial stage of the struggle, the oppressed, instead of striving for liberation, tend themselves to become oppressors, or "sub-oppressors."

So many thoughts about the dog training industry, as many of dog trainers view themselves as social justice/liberatory agents for dogs and other people, to liberate them from the use of punishment in teaching and the belief punishment is necessary to learn and teach. How if we view the people who believe in the necessity of violence to teach as both part of the oppressors and the oppressed, then people who have the resources to fully practice radical compassion and kindness (the oppressed who have become liberated) must work diligently not to become oppressors of these people in the name of the goal of liberation, and to recognize and work against the systems perpetuating these beliefs instead of focusing on villainizing individuals.

What do you do to be mindful of and work against the tendency to perpetuate systems of oppression in your work, for both dogs and people?

We are so excited to share this episode for more than one reason! The first being that our guest is Grisha Stewart Academy and Empowered Animals, LLC, who so kindly agreed to share her time and knowledge with us on a topic Jade is only becoming more passionate about. The other is a chance to share an upcoming webinar covering all sorts of topics about finding, adopting, and training a new dog in a neurodivergent-centric way!

We invited Grisha Stewart to discuss emotional regulation instead of something more dog-centric or BAT related because Grisha's academy has been the first source of information where learning about the nervous system and emotional regulation didn't put me (Jade) off immediately. The concepts and practices introduced have created a profound shift in my wellbeing and by extension, my dog's wellbeing, and my relationships with other people. Of course, I had lots of questions and want to make these concepts more accessible for more neurodivergent people, so I hope you find many valuable points to take away while listening.

Back to the upcoming webinar - visit the comments to find the link
The webinar is created and hosted by neurodivergent individuals and for neurodivergent owners (or professionals who want to learn more about working with ND owners).
We'll be covering things like breed traits that disproportionately affect ND owners, specific equipment for making training sessions more sensory friendly, and sensory considerations to take into account when considering what breed to get!

🚨 Charlie's Way is taking a short break! Probably for the next month.

While I love sharing content and seeing everyone enjoy that content, but I don't thoroughly love making content 😂 Taking a break from content creation for a bit gives me the time I need to prioritize and finish the other things that need to get done - like a webinar! 😁 and visiting my wonderful significant other across the country (and care for them after a surgery). and behind the scenes business things like the start of a newsletter, and changes to the Repair Your Relationship webinar! even the start of a new course on how to put together a hands off fish tank! 🤫

😁 The absence of content doesn't change much else - you can still reach me by messages on instagram and facebook, or over email. You can still watch the Repair Your Relationship webinar and sign up for a free call, and you can still sign up for the Neurodivergent dog guardian webinar.

🤷‍♀️ In other words, mostly this announcement doesn't affect you. But this announcement is actually a huge milestone for me as a person!

😬 I used to try to manage too many things, drop the ball on one (or all) of those things, and then just... hide 😂 The default is definitely hiding 🙃

🤷‍♀️ but having fluctuating spoons and executive functioning abilities is normal for ND people. Trying to ignore that isn't going to help anyone.

💁‍♀️ So now I'm just... learning to prioritize things around and purposefully setting things down instead of dropping them. (shocking, I know) 😂

So instead of disappearing and then just... never showing up again I'm just letting ya'll know ahead of time 🤷‍♀️

Your training might not be working because your dog is in pain or has poor balance/proprioception.

If you’ve been working on modifying your dog’s behavior and feel like you’re just stuck spinning your wheels, or you have days where you’re just completely crushed because you thought you were doing so well and today went so not well….

Your dog may be in pain! Pain, GI discomfort, imbalances, and other physical contributors can be extremely subtle and difficult to identify in dogs but definitely affect behavior. And no amount of training will fix a behavior if the underlying cause is pain.

If you’ve been spinning your wheels you may want to consider consulting with a holistic consultant who can help bridge the gap between you and your vet team, have a gait analysis done, and/or work with a specialist. If you want to learn more about my holistic framework to repair your relationship with your dog and improve both of your wellbeing, view the free webinar in my bio!

❗ Important PSA: you can be disabled and still make progress training a reactive, fearful, or aggressive dog.

😩 Dog training advice is steeped in ableism and shame toward people with fluctuating energy and abilities. You deserve to enjoy spending time with your dog as much as anyone else, and you deserve a dog trainer who will make accommodations and a behavior plan unique to your needs.

🚫 I used to think I just had to live with my dog’s behavior problems because with my chronic fatigue, I didn’t have the energy or spoons to dedicate to his training after work every day, and on weekends needed the downtime to recharge.

😁 Then I started focusing on improving the quality of our relationship instead of modifying his behavior. It was a big shift in viewpoint!

🥰 Now even though his behavior doesn’t look like gold standard behavior from other people’s expectations, his behaviors suit my lifestyle, dont impact either of our wellbeing, and we actually enjoy spending time together!

🤔 If you want to learn more about how to Repair YOur Relationship with your dog so you can start enjoying the time you spend with them too, watch the free webinar linked in my bio!

🥲 I used to take more time to prep my dog’s dinner than my own. I took care of my dogs SO WELL - “the best” food, toys, equipment - and took care of myself as an afterthought.

😩 For a long time, this worked. But really, its not really sustainable.

💁‍♀️ Self care is a part of caring for others. Annoying I know, but unfortunately the whole “can’t pour from an empty cup” thing is true.

🥰 Now I make sure to incorporate considerations for my own spoons into decisions and I make sure to set aside time to do things for myself without my dogs. My self care involves making sure I have protein shakes on hand to make sure I eat, and making sure I take my meds so I function.

❗ If you find yourself stuck in a cycle of giving and burnout and you’ve been on the lookout for the perfect behavior consultant to help with your reactive, aggressive or fearful dog… I’m just putting it out there that the Canine Connection workbook contains a whole section on getting clarity about a REALISTIC and sustainable amount of time and energy you have so your behavior change can also be sustainable and long lasting.

🤔 Want to know more about the Canine Connection program? Message me!

❗ If you often get frustrated while training, this episode is for you!

😁 I've been really excited to share this one since recording, as I think it touches on a few points that are seldom given much discussion - especially frustration during training.

👉 Our guest is Max Siefert, fellow ND horse and dog trainer to teach us (and you), more about horse training, his transition through training methods over time, his experience with being ND, and even a little bit about emotional regulation for humans. The added complexity of learning to emotionally regulate while also learning to train or change methods is seldom mentioned, so we're excited to share this conversation with you and hope you find it relatable!

Max Seifert is a CPTD-KA and CGC evaluator based in Frederick, MD. He owns Rosie’s Tail Training, and specializes in reactivity and aggression cases. Using his lived experiences with neurodivergence and trauma, his education, and his hands-on experience, he creates training plans that put emotional regulation and unmet needs at the forefront.
