It's world turtle day!!! Let's show some love and appreciation for our turtle friends!!!🐢💚

Why did the turtle cross the road?? To get to their nesting area!!🤣 That may be true!! So always be sure to move them in the same direction they were already headed!❤️

Here are some tips for helping our turtle friends this summer!! 🐢 🐢 🐢

Make sure if you have to transport an injured turtle, you take a detailed note about where they were found, this helps rescuers be able to relocate them in the same area❤️ Keep them in a dry container at room temperature and do not feed or give water!

And this is the number to call for an injured turtle! 705- 741-5000, that is the Ontario Turtle Conservation centre!

Turtles can lose up to 70% of their blood and still survive! Their eggs can also survive great trauma! Always pull over and help🤗❤️

Watch for the turtles!! And help them cross if possible❤️❤️

Time goes by so fast!!! How crazy is it to think that Toothless has been with us since nearly the beginning, in 2020?! Now we are 5 months into 2024, and wow so much has changed!!🥰 We made the move with over 30 animals two hours from where we've always lived before, into the beautiful country and now we are only 34 days away until we meet our little baby🩷🩷 We can't wait to introduce her to all of our furry and scaley babies too!

And just incase you were curious about little Gustavo and Gonzalez... well let's just say, they aren't little no more!!!😂 Oh it's so bittersweet how fast they grow🩷

These are the two boys we rescued in March, that came from living in a small tank, and had respiratory infections. We were able to take them immediately to the Haliburton vet office and secure medication for them, and after 2 weeks, a clean bill of health for these boys!!! And now they are growing like weeds 🥺

It has been a while since we have done a post update, and what better way to jump back in then to also be introducing 4 sweet little babies 🩷💙

These little babies will be the last of our rescue intakes for a while! But that's okay🥹

We rescued these sweet little babies and are providing them with a temporary home, and on Sunday they will be transferred to amazing where they will be quarantined and have more time for socialization and development! These babies are only roughly 3-4 weeks old, and should not have been separated from mama so soon! We are so thankful and lucky we could secure them, and so thankful for for stepping up to take on their care!🩷

These are some of the sweetest, funniest and most playful babies I have ever met! And they are going to make such amazing babies for amazing fur parents I have no doubt about it!! They will be available for adoption after a stay with 🩷 Trust me, if I could I'd be adopting these special babies myself!!!!

There is only one female, and we will be making sure she goes into a mischief with other females!!🥰🐀

These last few months have been a bit hard, and we have had a lot of personal things going on and health complications. We cannot wait to meet our baby girl, but cannot lie and say this journey has been easy. We always do everything we can for our animals, and realize also when it's time to reach out for additional support. I have known since 2020 now, and the owners have become amazing friends of mine, friends I consider family. Thank you for stepping up and helping me in a difficult time🩷

At the moment, we will not be taking in any intakes, and will continue to post the animals we do have, as with the help of we will be downsizing, but will continue to make posts regarding proper exotic animal care, etc. We will not be going anywhere, but may be taking extended breaks to help deal with the personal things around us! And I guaranteed, even if it's not this year, we will be in a position again to start taking in intakes and helping the rescue community, for now, we need a break🩷 Thank you for being apart of our family 🥰

"If I am killed simply for living, let death be kinder than man."

The world's largest snake, that was only discovered 5 weeks ago, has already been targeted and killed by hunters. She was a Northern Green Anaconda, with a length of more than 26 feet long, and weighed more than 440 pounds. She lived a long life, but would have still had years and years to go, but unfortunately, we as humans destroy so much of what we discover and uncover. She allowed scientists to discover that there are more than one species of the Green Anaconda to exist.

Basically, she was a pretty big deal. And the loss of such a rare animal, one we may never see at that size again, is a huge blow to biodiversity. Her size, surpassed any known snake species we have so far discovered, and the scientists that spent time with her researching her, even going as far as swimming with her, noted she was in the prime of her life and would have still produced many off springs if it wasn't for her death.

These apex predators play a very important role in maintaining ecological balance. Their presence shapes the delicate web of life, ensuring the survival of countless other species. With only a handful of colossal giant snakes like her, the loss is irreplaceable.

As we mourn Ana Julia(The name the Green Anaconda was given) we must reflect on our responsibility to protect these magnificent creatures. The Amazon rainforest, teeming with biodiversity, faces unprecedented threats from deforestation, climate change, and human encroachment. Ana Julia’s fate serves as a stark reminder that our actions have far-reaching consequences.

"If I am killed, simply for living, let death be kinder than man."

Special thanks to Haliburton Vets for helping us out once again!! 💙💙

Firstly, I was not expecting to have any rats again so soon! It feels like just a few months ago, that we lost my heart rats Alvin and Theodore but it came up on my story that it has already passed a year without them!! 🩷 Rats have stolen my heart and broke it so many times that I had decided to take a break for awhile. There had been a few different rat rescue situations we almost got involved in, but hadn't been directly needed/able to at the time, and now we wind up with these two sweet babies! 💙

Meet Gustavo, and Gonzalez🥰 The sweetest little babies on this planet!! Although they have just arrived to us, we needed to get them into the vet asap for an exam and antibiotics because we knew these sweet babies were ill with a respiratory infection :( Thankfully the Haliburton vets were able to get us in with the amazing vet that sees Exotics, and our sweet babies are on medication now and on their way to feeling much better!!🥰🥰

Adoption update!!🥰🥰

Who remembers our rescue boy Charmander?! If you are an OG follower, you definitely should!! 🥰

Charmander, now known as the Handsome Dudley, came into our rescue January 5th 2021. We actually took Dudley in because he was apparently aggressive and wasn't fit for normal rehoming😅 That was completely false, and Dudley to this day is one of the friendliest happiest bearded dragons I've ever had the pleasure of meeting!!!🥰

Dudley was adopted on August 13th 2021 by the amazing Ashley, who has kept us up to date about all their adventures since!!❤️ Dudley is spoiled rotten, and we are so thankful to have adopters like Ashley that help aid us to continue to take in rescues!! Speaking of which, stay tuned because we have somebody knew for you to meet! Or somebody's.. hehe!

Stay tuned for a Kenyan Sand Boa care guide!❤️

Above head heating is the most natural heating to provide for your snake! And yes! They will come out to bask 🥰

Snakes, even terrestrial species, need access to UVB/UVA! Why do we keep saying UVB/UVA is beneficial for MOST of your reptiles? Here's why!

Providing our reptiles UVB/UVA helps them get optimal levels of vitamin D that are so important for their bones and health.

It helps strengthen their skin barriers to make tougher and stronger skin, it even helps disinfect and protect against diseases and illnesses.

It helps strengthens their immune system so they have a stronger immune response. It also promotes healthy cell functions too!

It provides a more effective digestion system, stronger bones, a healthier nervous system, and more successful reproduction that also goes for females that can lay infertile eggs. It helps prevent egg bounding and aids them in gaining their strength back after they lay.

And over all it increases pigmentation in animals, it increases their energy levels and increases natural behaviors too!! We've seen this first hand since we provide all our reptiles with UVB! ❤️

Just a reminder about the 3-3-3 rule ! 🤗

Roughly 3 days for your new pet to decompress from the huge transition of moving and a completely new environment!

Roughly 3 weeks to learn a routine!

And Roughly 3 months for them to finally start to feel at home!

Give them the time! Plan for them needing extra space, and please allow your animals to have time to adjust to everything new in the home as well! From experience, proper introductions is the best way to go for introducing new animals into a home with animals already!

This is also another reason why rescue can be so difficult, because moving homes can be a very stressful and sometimes even traumatic event for the animals, and as much as we know animals need time to decompress, sometimes because of medical reasons they need examation right away, and even treatment which is extra scary after traveling a ways to us. Coming to a rescue, to then find a new home after coming from a different home, can be a big transition, that's why we try to minimize the stress on our animals by;

Keeping them in our rescue for a longer period of time then most (Also for a Quarantine purposes) but to allow them to fully settle, get to know us, and become more comfortable with the environment! This allows us to get to know their individual personalities, which better helps us pair to adoptors!

We spend alot of time choosing adoptors and spend alot of time connecting with them, and learning their knowledge and helping them to be able to understand the exact needs of said rescue! Many adoptors become close personal friends, as we spend alot of time getting to know eachother and building a relationship before adoption takes place! We love our animals so much, and its extremely important to us that we match our rescues with the best adoptors for them! There's also been situations were we have denies adoption, but that's another topic of Rescuing!

We also always take back our animals no questions asked and judgment free, because life can sometimes happen and we understand that, we want to make sure our animals always have a safe place to come back to, its apart of our adoption contract❤️

Remember, 3-3-3 🥰

Slytherin here!!🥰🥰 and we have some Kenyan Sand Boa or Gongylophis colubrinus facts to share with you!!🥰🥰

Did you know that in captivity, the Kenyan sand boa can live up to 20 years?! 🥰

Did you know that female Sand Boas are ovoviviparous? That means that the female incubates her young internally in her membranous sacs!!❤️

Did you also know that Kenyan sand boas are in the Boidae family, which represents 40 species of snakes? How cool!!🥰

Did you know Kenyan Sand Boas are sexually dimorphic? This means males and females differ in appearance! ❤️
Females are also larger than males! Females reach lengths up to 32 in, while males only reach 15 in🥰

If you didn't know, now you know!! Thanks to our special boy Slytherin ❤️ I think you may catch this boy with Spyro as an ambassador for snakes at our next event🥰

Domesticated birds should not have their wings clipped in our personal opinion. They need to have access to a large cage, many perches of different sizes and textures preferably, toys, and access to fresh water and food.

PART 4

The tank size recommendation for bearded dragons was 4x2x2, which I feel like a lot of people argued with when that standard came out, and instead the use of 40 gallon tanks is popular. 🫠

Now, the recommendation of minimum 6x2x2 is taking some for a loop. However, I really don’t think it’s unreasonable! Bearded dragons can get quite large, and need space for basking, and need space to be able to cool down, and especially need space for climbing, and digging. While I do feel you can have a fully thriving bearded dragon in a 4x2x2, I also believe a 6x2x2 would provide even more room for enrichment opportunities for your dragon!🦎❤️

However, I do not believe the absolute minimum should be 6x2x2. Although I do agree that if you can provide bigger you should, and do have plans to upgrade ours in the future to 6x2x2’s, I do think the absolute minimum should be 4x2x2, but nothing smaller.

And just while on the topic of enclosure sizes, I wanted to talk quickly about our snakes!
The minimum recommendation for ball pythons enclosures is 4x2x2, but after we've had a year to watch Medusa utilize every inch of her 4x2x2, we feel it's too small I personally recommend a 6x4x2 to fully allow your adult ball python to have access to climbing abilities, I promise you, they will use them!🐍🐍

Medusa will be getting an upgrade to at minimum a 6x4x2 in the near future, and then Slytherin our Kenyan Sand Boa will be getting an upgrade into her old 4x2x2!! The more space you can provide, the better!🐍❤️

PART 3

Let's move on to leopard geckos!(This can also go for
Fat Tailed geckos as well!) 🦎🥰

The minimum enclosure size recommendation for an adult leopard gecko actually depends on what site you look at. This is common for most things you will look up, and why it's so important to make sure you are researching from reputable well known sources, and fact checking the information you find. Some sites say a 10-20 gallon is more than enough room to keep a leopard gecko, this is completely wrong!! 🫠

The absolute minimum for an adult leopard gecko should be no smaller than 18x18x36, however… Let's talk about the new minimum that’s being recommended! 🌞

A very popular reptile information source is Reptfiles, it's definitely one of my favorites and one i recommend to all of you! They have updated their guide on the leopard gecko enclosure size, bumping it from 18x18x36, to 4x2x2 minimum. And just like with the crested gecko tank size increase, we agree with the leopard gecko tank size increase as well! We’ve had the opportunity to watch many different leopard geckos, with completely different personalities, in completely different environments and this is how I feel; Bigger is ALWAYS better, and leopard geckos love to burrow, just as much as they love to climb, and come out to bask! They should have multiple enrichment opportunities, hides, climbs, etc. Although I do feel like you can still provide this in a 18x18x36, I do not feel anything smaller is appropriate, and again bigger is always better. We agree with the new minimum of 4x2x2 for an adult leopard gecko to fully thrive!🦎❤️

03/02/2024

PART 2;

Let's start with Crested geckos!🦎🦎❤️❤️

The minimum enclosure size recommendation for an adult crested geckos according to many sources is an 18x18x24.

However, after watching many different crested geckos over the years, I feel this is too small for an adult to fully thrive, and doesn’t allow the climbing ability they should have access to.

Our juvenile crested gecko Dino is currently in an 18x18x24, and although because of his current size this is currently more than enough room, once he comes adult size he will need to be upgraded to an 18x18x36, just like our Adult Gargoyle gecko Falkor, who is apart of our sanctuary program! We do not recommend keeping an adult gecko, Crested gecko or Gargoyle gecko, in an 18x18x24, we agree the minimum for this species should be 18x18x36! 🦎❤️

PART 1; UPDATING THE MINIMUM TANK ENCLOSURE SIZES

While we work on continuing to get more Basic care guides out for you, we updated our current ones to match the latest information regarding each species!🐢🐸🦜🐍🦎

I personally never stop doing research, and if you compare the information regarding husbandry and care from even just a few years ago, to now, you’d be amazed at what we’ve been able to discover! That's why I feel it's important to always be making sure your knowledge is up to date and why I feel it's important to update our care guides to best match all that information! So, let's talk about new tank size recommendations! 🌞🌞

My husband and I started our rescue in 2020, and one of our first and largest rescue missions was a group of 25 sick and malnourished leopard geckos, also with Enigma Syndrome(ES). We thankfully were able to nurse each leopard gecko in our care back to health, the ones with the most serious ES symptoms were placed in other rescues to live out their life receiving special care, and the others were adopted out into amazing homes. Since then, we have received many different species of reptile and amphibian rescues, we even started helping with animals like Rats, Rabbits, and birds! However, the most popular species that come into our rescue are; Bearded dragons, Crested geckos, and of course, Leopard geckos! These 3 species of reptiles we have many years of experience with, all different types of situations and personalities! So I do feel most confident to talk about these 3 species especially, when it comes to enclosure size as we've had so many opportunities to monitor their behaviours!

Follow along our next post to hear about the new tank size recommendations for Crested geckos, leopard geckos, and bearded dragons! 🥰🥰

02/02/2024

Just a reminder that your reptiles and amphibians need hiding places, climbing enrichment, clutter, and UVB lighting!! 🥰🫣🌱🌞🥰

Remember, if you give them the space, they will use it!! And that most reptiles benefit from having access to UVB/UVA for many reasons!

Our sand boa loves being able to climb the background of his bioactive enclosure!!🥰 and Our Ball Python uses every inch of her tank and loves her branches! ❤️

All of the rescues apart of our sanctuary program have gotten upgraded tanks, more clutter, more natural decor, our usual UVB light replacement, and substrate!!! Most of our sanctuary animals are on loose substrate, apart from the ones that cannot be for certain reasons! We are so happy to be able to provide our animals with so much enrichment and watch them mimic their natural behaviors!! 🥰

Dino, our juvenile crested gecko, is still too small to go on loose substrate, but he was just recently upgraded to a 18×18×24, which he will stay in until he's big enough for an 18×18×36 bioactive set up!🦎

Bioactive setups are one of the best and most natural way of keeping your exotic animals!! ❤️

If you are currently not using loose substrate and are thinking of switching over, provide your animal with a dig box first to see how they respond! Do your research on the proper substrate mixtures, and make sure you are ready to take that step! The first thing to do is make sure your husbandry, like heating, humidity, and uvb, is all on point before making the switch! ❤️

01/02/2024

We have talked about the importance of heat and uvb for many reptiles, but what about bearded dragons🐉?! In the wild, bearded dragons live in climates that have relatively high temperatures🌇 and low humidity! Most importantly, Bearded dragons are heliothermic!🌞
Which basically means they are sun loving lizards, who have evolved to gain heat from the sun above!🌇

Bearded dragons also require the heat and UVB to help fight illnesses like RI infections, aids in preventing bacterial/parasitic infections, MBD, NSH, and allows the bearded dragon to properly digest food!! Not providing your bearded dragon adequate lighting, will absolutely be fatal to your bearded dragon!

Now that we have gone over some of the reasons Bearded Dragons require proper heat and UVB lighting to be fully-healthy, its important to add that lighting also needs to be combined with a proper diet, supplements like vitamins, and calcium to aid in preventing things like NSH (Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism) and MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease.)

All of our bearded dragons here at Southern Ontario Exotics get 12 hours of lighting and 12 hours of sleep, which means lights off and a temp drop! We provide our bearded dragons with T5 10.0 UVB lighting system! Coil UVB lights do not provide sufficient UVB lighting for your reptiles, and we don't recommend! UVB lights can be monitored with a UV radiometer and should be replaced every 6-12 months!!

Make sure you are always doing your research on proper heat and UVB lighting and which one is the best fit for your reptile/amphibian!!

Bearded dragons can live up to 10-15 years! So lets ensure we are doing the best we can, that way we can grow with them for years to come!!! ❤️

Did you know he oldest recorded Bearded Dragon was named Sebastian?! He passed away at the old age of 18 years and 237 days on January 24th 2016! Wow!🤯😮

If you need any help on where to find the right information, never hesitate to reach out for help!!!🥰

And of course - Pictures of our Spoiled boy Spyro, who is roughly 6-7 years old after a nice bath and of course, a big poop!!😂😂

Slytherin, our KSB embassador!!🩷🩷 (KSB = Kenyan sand boa for those that don't know!)

It's feeding day for our snakes!! Which makes this, Slytherins' favorite day!! Since both of our sanctuary snakes (Slytherin and Medusa) came to us, we've been able to fully size up their feeders after a couple months of consistently eating!! Both Slytherin, and Medusa were on hunger strikes before arriving unto our care, but since, neither of them have missed a meal!!🥰

I personally find many KSB owners don't provide the proper husbandry for a KSB to fully thrive! Meaning, they aren't providing the right lighting, temperatures, humidity, substrate, enrichment, etc!!

There is a huge misconception around KSB's, honestly around snakes in general! Snakes need enrichment, room to climb, burrow, and lots of clutter and hides to feel fully comfortable and confident in their home. This was Medusa's biggest issue! She did not feel safe, or comfortable in her home and was constantly on defensive. She did not have the right lighting, humidity, etc and this all affected her ability and 'want' to hunt/eat!

When you don't provide your snake with natural overhead heating (reptiles burrow to get colder, and climb/bask on logs and rocks for heat, this is what is MOST natural for them!) they won't have any reasons to come out to bask. When you provide a bare tank, that just has substrate (I see alot of people use Aspen but that can be so hard to keep humidity temps where they need to be), your snake won't feel comfortable and confident enough to come out and explore!

Give your reptile the most natural home you can, make sure you are doing research from multiple different sources, and make sure you are always updating your knowledge no matter how experienced you are!❤️

Did you know that every single reptile and amphibian at our Rescue has access to UVB/UVA lighting? Even our crested geckos/gargoyle gecko! 🥰

27/01/2024

While bath/shower time is a fun part of Oliver's routine, it also plays a crucial role in his health!!💧

Birds, whether in the wild or domesticed, need to be provided bathing opportunities multiple times a week, if not daily!! Why?? Let's dive into it🦜

Apart from the social aspect wild birds encounter during bathing times and cooling off from the summertime heat, bathing actually a crucial part of their health and their feather development!

Birds' feathers need the water to help cleanse their wings/feathers from dirt, debris, parasites, bacteria, and other unpleasantries! Without the water to wash these all away, these 'pests' would start to destroy the feathers and ultimately could lead to the sickness/death of a bird!

Once birds have cleaned their feathers, it's time for preening! Preening is super important to a birds feather development, as preening opens up new feathers, and being freshly washed makes it easier to break open the new incoming feathers! Birds can get stuck pin feathers, which can be very uncomfortable for the bird! Regular bathing helps!

Did you know that Birds also have a "preening gland" at the base of their tail?! They spread oil from this gland all around/over their feathers to help waterproof them, especially during colder months! Birds spent alot of time preening, making sure every feather is cleaned, and oiled, sometimes our domesticed birds need extra help with the hard to reach pin feathers!

Of course, there is more than just water bathing! Some birds use a "Sun bath", others a "dust bath" and some, including Blue Jay's, have an "Ant bath"! Yes you read that right! Ants produce Formic Acid that can kill bacteria, mites, and other pests alike! Blue Jay's use ants to help preen and kill anything unwelcomed!!🦜

We hope everybody has had an amazing 2024 so far, we know we have🥰

Oliver is just over the moon wanting to tell everybody our exciting news!!🤗🤗

In 2024, Oliver should be turning 5?? We think?? We estimate anyway! 🤣

When Oliver came to our rescue, we were his 4th home, and at the time, he was only 3 years old! We decided that Oliver would become a permanent resident in our rescue and help be an embassador for Conure care! He has done an amazing job, and we think he is as happy as he can be 🥰

There will be a lot of changes coming our way, as we navigate the new journey of becoming first time (Human) parents, as we welcome our baby girl Meadow, in June 🤗🩷🤗 We have been busy preparing for her arrival, rearranging the animal room, etc and figuring things out along the way! We took a break for a few months from posting, as I was extremely ill in the beginning months of my pregnancy, and there was alot for us to figure out!🩷

With all the changes coming our way, here is one thing for sure! Oliver will always have a home with us, and I think he is quite thrilled about that! 🤣 And our education and rescue efforts will not stop! We are so excited to bring our little girl into the rescue world, and we hope she will be as thrilled as we are to be helping all the animals we can🩷 With this being sad, we will be limited and posts may not be as frequent but we will try our best!!🥰 Currently our team at the moment just consists of my Husband and I, but we are eager to announce we are hoping to have a new member or two joining the crew to help with rescues, posting, education, etc! I have always wanted to get into posting more educational videos, set up videos etc and this is still my goal!! Hopefully I'll get a post up for everybody soon! For now, we just wanted to announce we are back, and that we will soon have our own little helper with all our animals and rescues🥰

Some rescues that come into our care are just here for a stay, while they get all the care and love they need until we feel they're ready to find their forever homes!! 🥰

Others become a part of our Sanctuary Program, and live our their lives in our rescue, or a partnered rescue to be able to receive the extra care they need!! ❤️

There are many reasons an animal would need to become apart of our Sanctuary Program, let's look at a few examples!

Oliver the Jenday conure was only 3 years old when he came into our care, however we were his fourth home!!🥺 I do believe that because of the constant change in homes and people, that caused some behavioral issues which is to be expected!! Oliver is the best boy, that just needs extra extra time to warm up meeting new people, etc! Oliver joined our Sanctuary Program so he could live out his many remaining years with us and help educate others on how rewarding adopting a bird is, but how hard it can be as well!

Life is so crazy, and so unexpected, many owners do the best by all their animals, and sometimes that is rehoming them to a family that has the most time, and that is completely okay and why we are here to help!!!❤️

Falkor the Gargoyle Gecko joined our Sanctuary program to ensure he continues to get the extra care he needs! His very first home, was not knowledgeable on his care enough and unfortunately as a result Falkor has MBD. He was then rescued by an amazing woman, who gave him all the love and TLC he needed! MBD is not curable, you can not fix the damage that has already been done, but you can absolutely prevent it from getting worse!! When Falkor came into our care, we vowed that we would keep him to be able to make sure he gets the extra TLC he needs to make sure his MBD doesn't get worse!❤️

Medusa the ball python is also apart of our Sanctuary Program, and so is Toothless the Bearded Dragon!!❤️❤️
