There is a local family looking to rehome their Aussie. This is not a twice born pup, just trying to help this baby. He is four years old, unaltered, unregistered. Great around kids and has been around other dogs. Unfortunately this pup is looking towards shelter life if he doesn’t find a home asap.

Finally some sunshine!! The farm is a muddy mess, so we’ve swept the old hay out of the barn and spread some mulch in hopes of helping it all dry up this week. The animals are all loving the sunshine and warmer temps! Daniel also is building the Py’s a platform house of their own ❤️

I’ve been seeing this post float around all over facebook. From pig groups to bbq groups. The original post is very misleading and leave out a lot of important details. Because of that, I pretty much put it in the BS category and moved on.

Then I started seeing a lot of farms start to share it. I’d click on the posts to read what they had to say and read a few of the comments. While debunking the original post, they’d add in their own lies and BS that farmers like to use. I don’t know if it’s because they honestly do not know and have fell victim to the trendy lingo, or if they know and are banking on only their customers and future customers not knowing so they can get sells. 🤷🏻‍♂️

One of the posts that rubbed me raw started out great. They explain how pigs are omnivores and why they are not ruminates. It’s true, pigs are omnivores. Where they lost me was shortly after that they tried to explain how their pigs are raised on pasture and are “supplemented” with feed. That’s not how that works! They are either omnivores or they are ruminates.

Let me explain a little further.

Pigs are monogastric animals, meaning they have a single chambered stomach and are not ruminates like cows, which can subsist largely on grass thanks to their specialized digestive system. Pigs cannot survive or thrive solely on pasture because they lack the digestive ability to extract sufficient nutrients from grasses. While they do forage and can benefit nutritional from roots, insects and plants found in some pastures, their primary nutritional needs are met through feed which is carefully formulated to provide the necessary protein, energy, vitamins, and minerals.

Therefore, pigs are raised on feed and supplemented with pasture.

I get that it doesn’t sound as catchy, but as farmers who want people to buy from us instead of commercial pork, so why stoop to their level with the lies and greenwashing for the sake of a sale?
If your sales are based on some trendy misleading lingo and/or greenwashing, maybe it’s time to either invest in better genetics or just stop.

A pasture serves as a valuable supplement for enrichment, exercise and a SMALL portion of their diet, but their primary nutrition comes from the feed.
Pasture Raised is used as a marketing term to highlight that the pigs have access to a more natural environment compared to indoor confinement. It was never meant to be this “raised on pasture and supplemented with feed” thing that so many love to push upon those that don’t know.

If you’re “supplementing” with feed, your pigs are malnourished. They might look fat in the stomach, but that is because their lack of feed is causing them to try and fill up on grasses that they cannot properly digest to receive nutrients.

Perfect example.
I love drinking Monster energy drinks and beer. Sometimes I probably intake more of those two than I do food. That doesn’t mean that I live on Monsters and Dos Equis and am supplementing myself with food. It means my nutritional needs are not being met that day.

Another example…
Look at your local m**h head. It’s very likely they are smoking m**h multiple times a day and only eating once or twice a week.
THEY ARE NOT LIVING ON M**H AND SUPPLEMENTING WITH FOOD! They are malnourished.

So again, stop with the misleading BS because it sounds cool. Stop with the Greenwashing. Do better and be honest. It’ll go a lot further.
That is also why our pork packages only have 3 words on the label. Pure. Honest. Pork.
Our hogs are verified pure by dna.
We are honest with ourselves and our customers.
It’s pork.

It’s a muddy mess here and due to rain the next two days. 🤦🏼‍♀️

To me, the worst part of winter isn’t feeding, it’s not the extra money from purchasing more bedding etc, it’s the frozen water!! We don’t have any electricity in our coops and barns, so daily when we feed, we are also busting up ice in order to refill water so all the animals stay hydrated. Good thing they all enjoy chewing on the ice as well lol

Currently 18 degrees and feels like 12. Got these sweet babes some extra bedding to burrow down into tonight.

Twice Born Aussies

We are new to breeding Australian Shepherds, but not to the breed. My husband and I both grew up with Aussies of our own. While raising children we had several pets, but my husband longed for another Australian Shepherd.

Last year I searched until I felt I found the perfect match for him. Zeus came into our lives and my husband Daniel fell in love. Zeus is our current sire. He is so loving and sweet, definitely medium to high drive. He loves to play ball, belly rubs and go on walks. He is certainly a daddys boy! He is so good with everyone he meets! Zeus is a blue merle ASDR registered.

We were so impressed by Zeus we started searching for a female, we still had no intentions of breeding. We found Logan also through a facebook group. Logan is our absolute sweetheart. She listens well, she is a Velcro dog, loves to run, she loves playing fetch and just wants to be near us at all times, she also can catch mice like nobody's business, she is low drive. Logan is a black tri, ASDR/AKC registered.

After a lot of studying and consideration we decided we wanted to enter this crazy breeding world. We had our first litter in September of 2019. 9 beautiful healthy babies! Through Facebook we found Zeus’s original breeder and Ric, that owns Shackle Island Aussies, has been a great mentor to us!
