Last week was incredibly tough. We lost 2 of our sweeties within days of each other.
First we lost Alfie, my main house dog and best friend here in China. He’d had bladder surgery a month or so ago and developed thrombocytopenia (essentially very bad anemia) and had to be hospitalized. He came home on bedrest but a few day later his breathing became very heavy and I rushed him back to the hospital, where he unfortunately passed away rather quickly. At first the vet suspected poison but none of the other animals showed symptoms so we assume it was another complication from his surgery.
Then we lost Dimzy, our sweet little baby. Dimzy had started to struggle to eat the start of last week and got progressively worse over the following days. His already large esophagus completely dilated and the sphincter connecting it to his stomach relaxed to the point it was non-functional. In order to ease his suffering and avoid him literally starving to death even though he was eating almost constantly I made the decision to let him pass peacefully in my arms.
I don’t tell you this just to make you sad but to show the most difficult part of rescuing and loving these animals so much. Nanjing Rescues has slowed down a lot these past two years, mostly because I do pretty much everything myself. So when things like this happen, or life gets in the way, I can’t do as much as other rescue(r)s.
I try where and when I can but I am just one person trying to make a difference. Thank you for all the support you guys have given me these past 4 years, you’re the only reason we’ve been able to help almost 100 strays find such loving homes and families.
As for the future of Nanjing Rescues, I will be taking a break from taking in any new animals for the foreseeable future. I’ve been focusing on finding homes in China for the dogs and cats we already have but it’s been very rough going since COVID. If you see some of our posters, please consider sharing them in order to increase the likelihood of their forever families finding them.
