Dog or Rabbit? 🧐

It's foster bunny, Truffle Pig!

His neuter surgery is right around the corner. In the mean time, Truffles has been living it up with his foster family & other furry friends.

Truffles is a bit of an escape artist, but with some adjustments to his living area and enrichment opportunities, his foster family has been so accommodating to his sneaky playfulness as he yearns to be an adventurer. He has been nick-named “Houdini”. He sure has some magic tricks up his tail.

Truffles gets plenty of free roam social time in the home and has a ton of toys, but when in his pen and when no one is looking, he sneaks out even with a cover pinned to the top. This can be a common occurrence for our young explorer buns, so learning your bun’s behavior is helpful to make adjustments and try different strategies to keep them safe, secure and healthy.

We think he'd been getting out underneath. Bunnies do like to burrow and are curious, but boy has some muscles. There are different tools you can utilize; we had discussed plastic pen walls to board around the metal pen, obtaining a heavier pen set, putting something heavy in front of the pen like a box etc. The foster family also created a “dig box” for enrichment and to encourage natural behavior, which he loves!

His foster says:

“He cracks me up. He thinks he's a dog”.

He is quite the confident and charming lad.

CAST
Foster Human: Adult human
Little Star (foster bun): Female, 6 months old, white lop mix with helicopter ears (1 up, 1 down)

ACT 1
SCENE:
The action of Act I takes place in fall 2024

🌟Center stage: Little Star is in her x-pen, lounging on her fleece blankets, ears twitching to better hear Foster Human's movements upstairs. She's eyeing her bun neighbor, curious about if/when she'll get to play with other bunnies again. She'd enjoyed hopping around with her mom, Goose, and siblings - Wonder, Skye, Cloud, and Twinkle.
🌟 Stage right: Star's beloved tunnel, hay bag, & litter box (which she uses very well).
🌟Stage Left: Slightly in the shadows is an X-pen housing Little Star's neighbor bun.

Foster Human descends from the kitchen above. In their hands is a plate of fresh greens (romaine lettuce and cilantro).

Little Star excitedly zooms over, showing off her perfected binkies. Foster human, setting down the greens, greets her warmly and picks her up. Little Star lays in her humans' arms, melting in delight as she soaks up pets. After their snuggle, Little Star is set back down in her enclosure. Foster human picks up the plated greens and sets them next to the adorable little lop with the cutest little mohawk. Star dives into her greens and happily munches away.

Lights dim & curtain closes.

Act II
SCENE:
The action of Act II takes place in December 2024

🌟The red velveteen curtain is still lowered.
🌟Center stage: In front of the curtain is a solitary pet carrier. Little Star is loafing in it, sooo happy that it's loaded with her favorite hay. Actually, all hay is her favorite. What she doesn't know is that she's traveling to her spay appointment...

Act III
SCENE:
The action of Act III takes place in December 2024

🌟Set: Identical to Act I

Little Star is hopping around her pen. She's healed from her spay and knows it's time to find her forever home. Star isn't sure what the holiday's are, but she overheard Foster Human say it's a magical time, and that sometimes, wishes are granted.

The little floof flops down inside her tunnel and queezes her little eyes shut.

Little Star: I wish...I wish... I wish for a furever home where I can zoom around, binky, get lots of pets, and maybe have a bun friend, too!

This Giving Tuesday, or any other day really, please consider sharing & promoting our longest foster resident, Keiko. Together, let's find her a home for the new year!

Keiko has been at Snickerdoodles' Rabbit Rescue for almost 6 months. That's about 183 days in foster care.

Keiko was transferred to us as a baby from another great house rabbit rescue. She was part of a litter of babies of a bunny that was identified as a male by a humane society originally (turns out that this rabbit was a female and got pregnant in their care).

When Keiko initially came to Snickerdoodles’, she was very skittish and did not like being held. Most bunnies don't, this is common. Keiko did not like it, to the point she would scratch unintentionally to get away. We took things very slow and gentle with her, accommodating to her needs, but also helping her build confidence.

After socialization with Keiko together with her fosters, she has grown more trusting and now allows us to pick her up without a fight. She finds comfort from snuggling under our chin. She doesn't feel panic when we enter her room and try to run away. She enjoys gentle pets and head scratches between the ears.

She loves recreating her enclosure and designing new things with cardboard. Keiko is also really great with using her litter box and keeps a tidy space outside of tearing up her toys and being crafty. Keiko is spayed.

Keiko has made appearances at so many of our adoption and educational events through out these past 6 months. Although she got some temporary lovin’, no one stuck around. We know there is a special person or family out there for Keiko.

Perhaps - there may even be a special bunny companion waiting for Keiko, too.

We offer bunny bonding services and support - so if you'd like to set up a first date with your current bun / meet & greet, please click below to apply:

Thank you for your support. Let's find sweet Keiko a home !!!

**Edit: Both babies did great and are back home with their foster families 🥰

Skye and Wonder are both getting spayed/neutered today. Good luck, little lop babies!

And then we have *four* more surgeries next week on the same day. 😳

As a smaller, but mighty rescue, that all adds up to a very expensive December for us, SRRPLS.

We'd be super appreciative if you'd sponsor a surgery for Little Star, Wonder, Cloud, Skye, or Truffle Pig! 🫶🙏

The cost of spay/neuter including microchip for each of them is $180.

The lop babies (Little Star, Wonder, Cloud, Skye) will be ready for their furvever homes soon. If you think you may want to bring one of these sweet babies home, don't delay - fill out an application today!

Give now to transform lives.

We need your participation to make this year's Giving Tuesday a success for the bunnies & families that we serve.

Since opening in 2021, every single rabbit that comes into our program is vetted, and spayed/neutered prior to adoption. We've been able to do that, all thanks to you! In 2025, we are going to also ensure that every single bunny receives the RHDV-2 vaccine as well as a microchip to further meet needs and all prior to adoption. Consider sponsoring a rabbit’s medical care!

We've gotten an abundance of messages about dumped bunnies in several communities. There is a rabbit dumping crisis, and winter is right around the corner. Reports of groups of rabbits dumped in parks, neighborhoods, the woods, the highway, and they are overpopulating, facing risks that lead to illness & death.

We always need fosters. Now more than ever. We've taken in more bunnies this year than we ever have in previous years. Our current team has worked extremely hard this year and every year before, but we really need more help. More people. More hearts and homes. We need long term fosters, emergency/temporary fosters, as well as foster to adopt.

We've had so many people this past month tell us “Wow! I never knew something like this existed near us!” We are happy to hear that we are filling a gap in our communities … but this tells us that there is still a ton of work to be accomplished and making our programs known in order to help more rabbits & people in need.

Even if you are afar and cannot help in these ways, you can still be an advocate, an educator, a supporter. You can help by sharing our social media posts to your page & to community groups, anyone within your network, commenting/liking our content. Please help us spread the word. Follow our page, encourage others to follow as well.

Share with your local libraries, your employer, your vet clinic. Our volunteer team and dedicated house rabbit educators have facilitated many educational workshops over the years in various settings to reach a diversity of audience and populations. If you'd like us to visit and offer a workshop to your group - let us know!

We also offer pet loss grief support and a free floral delivery program for those who are grieving the loss of their animal companions. These programs offered through Snickerdoodles’ are lead and facilitated by a Licensed Veterinary Social Worker. We want to be sure that this reaches those families that need it the most … share! Share with your vet clinic, your church, your school, your work, everyone & anyone.

We couldn't do this without all of you. THANK YOU.

We just adore getting adopter updates. 🥹

Remember Russet, the handsome potato adopted last year?

Some time ago, he was initially surrendered due to the caregivers having allergies. He was then adopted out to a family, but then surrendered back to our rescue again due to housing concerns & changes within the family/other stressors.

We are so happy that he landed with his current family where he is bonded with his companion bun, Delilah, and has a stable environment where he is forever cherished.

His wonderful caregiver says:

“They are both doing great & are the very best of friends!” 🐰🩷🐰

Here is our first round of our holiday fundraiser animal companion illustrations.

Made by our volunteer, Cara.

Lenny (🐰) & Moose (🐶)

"Lenny has no eyes (when she was a baby, she had a bout of E. Cuniculi which resulted in her eyes having to be removed.) But she’s a happy little thing, still hopping around like nothing happened.

She is also a very regal bunny, loves to snuggle but only when her busy schedule allows. She demands a fresh salad every day, and when we oblige, she spins in circles until we give her her greens.

Moose is a 107 pound boy. He is a very loyal retriever, often bringing shoes to everyone who comes in our house. He thrives on attention, so if he manages to go 4 and a half minutes without receiving attention he will begin to melt like an ice cream cone."

- Navigating Grief through the Holidays -

It's the time of year for warm fuzzy feelings & spreading cheer. However, it's important to also acknowledge how grief may impact our functioning as it can be heightened during the holidays with the added stressors.

Here are some strategies to consider to promote healthy grief & healing while navigating the holidays, and some other guiding points as you process your journey.

🔸Avoid the urge to socially isolate completely. Connecting with others can be a significant part of recovering from loss.

🔸It can be challenging to not feel obligated to participate in traditions and other festivities. However, you may consider choosing your commitments carefully. Be honest with yourself & others on what you have the energy to manage.

🔸Give yourself permission to set appropriate boundaries with yourself, friends, and family, for whatever you feel may meet your needs in that moment. Consider your physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, psychological needs.

🔸Graciously welcome the complexity of your emotions that may appear, both positive, negative, and in between. You may experience feeling impatient, angry, or guilty.

🔸Know that not all grief experiences are the same. This may be the first holiday without your animal companion, and you would typically have a routine with them, so you are adjusting to this.

Maybe your animal companion has reached their special senior years, and what you typically would do this time of year, they are not able to participate the way they used to. This can be a beautiful opportunity to explore something new together.

Many people may experience disenfranchised grief, a grief that cannot be easily publicly mourned , or socially accepted.

Maybe you're grieving because of limitations in what you can provide to your companion this time of year. Heat, shelter, food, enrichment, social time. This all has an impact on the relationship.

🔸Grief isn't just about saying goodbye. It is
finding a way to relate to our departed loved ones in a different way.

🔸Find Meaningful and Purposeful ways of honoring your memories with your animal companion. (E.g. lighting a candle, putting an extra star on top of the tree, volunteering with an animal rescue, create a photo album, etc).

What are some new traditions that you have started, or some that you have maintained to continue the bond with your animal companion?

💐 Here at Snickerdoodles’, we also offer our special Petals for Animal Companions (PAC) program. You may consider placing a request for a floral arrangement to be delivered to you or a loved one this holiday season, at no cost.

Click the link here to be directed to our PAC program:

https://snickerdoodlesrescue.org/pac-request

Each individual & family's experience is unique. We are here to support. If you feel you may need to explore other options according to your unique needs, please reach out to us and we can process together to link you with resources.

💔Our hearts are heavy today. 💔

The Lunchbox babies did not make it.

Everyone on our team jumped in and did whatever they could, & we did our best with the knowledge we had, research through house rabbit sources, and communication with our wonderful veterinarians (we had Kitten Milk Replacement & Goat Milk formula planned to provide). We are grateful for our team and their contributions while navigating this all.

Little Cow Tale did what she was able to. It is common for a young mom rabbit to not know what to do, and developmentally her body was not ready. Even with the adjustments to build a more suitable enivornment to meet their needs, we know that this still happens, but that does not take away the grief that we feel.

She is just a baby herself.

Failure to thrive situations are difficult to witness. But let’s be frank - they were never set up for success.

Whether Cow Tale was dumped before or after she was pregnant isn’t too important. What matters is that someone(s) abandoned her (and Apple Juice) outside to fend for herself. It’s highly unlikely she could forage the proper nutrition for her own growing body, let alone support the growing fetuses inside of her.

This, the dumping of bunnies, has to stop. We're going to need your help with spreading awareness if we want it to get better.

May the Lunchbox babies binky free, over the rainbow bridge 🌈, knowing that they were loved 💖

& for all of our supporters, thank you for your kindness and jumping into action to help. Your thoughts and gestures mean so incredibly much to us and these bunnies. 💜

24/11/2024

Well, everyone, meet the Lunch Box crew.

You already know Cow Tale & Apple Juice. The young bunnies that were dumped together outside.

Cow Tale just gave birth late yesterday evening to 3, beautiful pink babies. We had suspected this might happen, considering she and Apple Juice were together outside for a while, trying to survive together.

It's just that they are both so young themselves, & Cow Tale, being a first time mom, did not appear to have any nesting behaviors or other signs of pregnancy. We were still stunned at the sight of these tiny, delicate living beings, but we had to act quick.

We had discovered that the babies crawled outside of the pen and were scattered in different directions around the room, but were safe and full of life. We huddled them back together ever so gently, but quickly, and helped mom create a warm nesting box with fleece & bedding, turning the heat on in the home a bit more as well.

Mom has her own litter box separate from the nesting box with freshened up hay as well. Stepped out of the room to give mom some decompression time to naturally adjust, we don't want to intervene with the next steps unless really necessary. This is mom's time to shine with her babies, and we want her to know she can do this.

Bodies are warm & bellies are full still this morning. Cow Tale is adjusting sweetly to her little squirmy kiddos. She's taking care of herself, as well, and taking breaks when she needs, but still laying by the nesting box protectively.

We are so thankful, and as we continue to monitor their progress, please keep the Lunch Box crew in your thoughts.

We REALLY need your help.

We didn't just rescue two rabbits that day. We rescued FIVE.

That's five more, precious lives. Five more mouths to feed. Five more spay/neuters.

We could use more alfalfa hay, or, if you'd like to make a monetary donation or view the Amazon List, please click here:

Thank you so much for your support.

“Cute little head,
Quiet as a mouse.
Curious and shy,
Plush mushroom house.
5 months old,
Will do as she’s told.

Neat piles of poo,
She’ll cuddle you too.
Soft and sweet,
Can clip her feets.
Great at puzzles
And kissy nuzzles.

Blankets to burrow,
David Attenborough.
Zoomies on high,
Short car rides.
Like all this?
Look up at Skye!”

A poem by Skye’s foster family

Skye will be spayed and microchipped before adoption. She is litter box trained.

22/11/2024

Dear Everybunny,

My name is Wonder. I am applying to find my furever home, a place where I can live out my career as buniness manager and retire (with full bunefits of course).

I have a solid 5 months of experience under my floof (also this floof-hawk that appeared out of nowhere on my head, anyway..). I work on the basement level under my current temp-employer, JFS (job&foster services). My duties include, but are not limited to: pumping out only the healthiest poo’s and confining them to my litter box, pushing my ball around, doing puzzles, binkies, and stacking/unstacking cups. On my breaks, I do very much like to stretch allll the way out with my feets at full length.

I get along well with my coworkers, particularly because we all stay in our own cubicles and mind our own buniness (I do like to sneak a peak at the angora girl upstairs). I even get along with JFS offspring (who knew they could have such a large litter). They say once I get my “promotion” from the vet soon, I might be able to work with others. My spunky energy could be utilized to succeed as a team. My sister, Skye, also works here in a cubicle beside me. She doesn’t think much of me and honestly I don’t even look at her.

Aside from my helicopter ears, I’m pretty straightforward. Play with toys, poo in the box..just buniness as usual. I do NOT like to be held for long, but if you insist, we can schedule an appointment *on my time*. If you’re “wondering” whether I’d be an excellent addition to your family, please fill out a transfer form (the link is below) for corporate to review.

Respectfully Yours
Wonder

Apple Juice & Cow Tale update: 🧃 🐄

They had their visit with our veterinarian, and were provided with Revolution for the fleas. For the concerns of an upper respiratory issue, they're on antibiotics and eye drops. After the antibiotic treatment, they will start on a probiotic.

Also, Apple Juice is a male & Cow Tale is a female!

Needless to say .... they will continue to be in separate x-pens for now until they're old enough for their spay & neuter surgery, then will be back together again.

They're such sweet babies and love to flip their toys around. They love to check in on each other and observe interactions from their pens. Cow Tale seems to chitter when she looks at Apple Juice. Could be hormones .. could be that they are besties. They really adore each other.

Thank you to those who have donated so far to their care. We appreciate each and every one of you.
