What exactly is recommended for a canine annual exam?

#1- The exam itself. This is where we take a good look at your pet including anything you have noticed and want checked out. This gives us a baseline of the things we may want to investigate further for the visit!

#2- Update vaccines. Did you know that some dog vaccines are good for three years while others are only good for one? We take a look at your dogs records and make sure to keep them updated on any vaccines that they may need this year.

#3- Heartworm testing. Unfortunately, Hawaii has heartworm. This is a small parasite that is transmitted by mosquitoes. If your dog is infected, these worms live in their heart and lungs and can cause fatal complications. Even if your dog is on preventative, we recommend testing every year to make sure that they are staying negative. This test is also legally required for us to continue prescribing heartworm preventative.

#4- F***l exam. This is where we look at a sample of your dog’s stool under the microscope and check for any intestinal parasites. Hawaii has abundant hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. If we find these in your pup’s p**p, we will make sure to get them dewormed and feeling better.

#5- As your pet gets older, we recommend doing yearly bloodwork to check their organ values and white and red blood cells. We can catch many diseases early this way. When we catch things early, we can treat your dogs faster and help keep them happy longer! We may recommend additional testing depending on your dogs particular history and risk factors.

#6- Medications. For almost all dogs, we recommend they be on monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventative. We utilize our online pharmacy to get these medications shipped directly to you with no need to head to the store.

Is your pet due for their annual exam? Give us a call today to get a home visit scheduled for any dogs or cats in your household.

Fourth of July can be scary for pets and lots of pets tend to get lost during the festivities. Be sure to keep your pet ohana safe today!

Safety during July 4 celebrations:

-Leave your pets at home when you go to parties, fireworks displays, parades and other gatherings. Loud fireworks, unfamiliar places and crowds can all be very frightening to pets, and there's great risk of pets becoming spooked and running away.

-Consider putting your pets in a safe, escape-proof room or crate during parties and fireworks.

-If you're hosting guests, ask them to help keep an eye on your pets to make sure they don’t escape. Placing notes on exit doors and gates can help both you and your guests remain vigilant.

-Keep your pets inside if you or your neighbors are setting off fireworks.
Keep sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks, charcoal and kabob skewers away from curious pets.

-Don't let pets get near your barbecue grill while it is in use or still hot.

-Avoid the urge to feed your pets table scraps or other foods intended for people. Be especially careful to keep them away from common foods that are actually toxic.

-Remember that too much sun and heat (and humidity!) can be dangerous to pets. Keep them inside when it's extremely hot/humid; make sure they have access to shady spots and plenty of water when outdoors; don't leave them outside for extended periods in hot weather; and know the signs that a pet may be overheating.
