Horses are incredibly sensitive animals, picking up on the slightest change in our emotions and reacting to them. That's why some people say that our horses are the very best trainers of all. When we ride, we have to learn to put the highs and lows of our day to one side and focus on the present in order to succeed.⁣

It's a big day here in the United States with people across the nation flocking to the polls to cast their vote. We're also very happy to be spending time with four legged friends who listen to us, carry us and love us regardless of whether we vote red or blue..!

Struggling to find motivation in the face of ever more gloomy news about Covid-19? Hopefully the barn can be your sanctuary and a place to forget negativity for a while! Why not set yourself some training goals, even if you don't have competitions to aim for? Here are some goals setting tips to try!

1. Be specific - instead of saying "get better at flatwork" set yourself a goal of "learning shoulder in" or "achieving a flying change" Be specific so you can make steps towards it.

2. Give yourself a time frame. Goals like to be held in time, so when do you want to achieve this by?

3. Believe in it. How can you achieve something if you don't believe in it! Self-belief is so key and will really be the difference between you achieving your goals and not.

4. Use your support network. Who do you need around you to help make this happen? A coach? Mentor? Partner? Ask them to help you 💖🐴

In some US states and parts of Europe and Canada we're starting to see some chilly mornings and evenings as truly autumnal weather arrives! 🍁❄️

One of these would be mighty useful to help those muscles relax after work or help dry horses after a bath. Time to put one on the Christmas gift list!

🐴 That all-important warm up! 🐴

If you trailer your horse to most or all of your competitions, then your warm will be more important than ever. If they’ve developed tension whilst being hauled or they have any underlying stiffness at all, then getting straight on board from the trailer might just aggravate it.

It’s worth lunging them on the biggest circle possible and with no training aids at all on them, to help them find their own balance and stretch the parts of their body that they want to.

Then, when you do get in the saddle, try riding them as low and long as you can (which might be easier said than done if they find the atmosphere exciting!) to continue that stretching. 🧘‍♀️

If you have limited time with a coach or trainer, you really want to make sure you’re getting the most out of your sessions with them. 🐴 Here are our four top tips to help you out:

⭐️ Prepare mentally and physically for your session. Make sure you have the right tack fitted, warm up you and your horse and get in the right frame of mind.

⭐️ Agree goals with your coach. If you have a competition or class in mind, share that with them and build a plan together which will help you get there.

⭐️ Communicate with them - ask questions and listen to everything they have to say. If you only take on board the things you want to hear, nothing will really change.

⭐️ Be patient. They say that anything important takes time to change, so make sure you don’t expect results too quickly. Stick with it!
