Today the pups are introduced to their new larger puppy pen. All snuggled up after introduction and some cuddle time 🥰

Potty area training is now commenced as well(They moved their bed into it but it will be moved lol) There is a long tote cover under the puppy pads, this gives the pups a « feel » of having to go over a lip to go potty. By next week we will have the bottom of the tote in place in hopes they go potty in there and keep their play/sleep area clean. This is first step to teaching pups there is a certain place to go potty(which will eventually be outside). Once they become better their puppy pen gets larger for play area and potty area gets smaller.

At the moment crates are open for them to explore, next week we start some light training in hopes to be fully crate trained by the time they go to their forever loving homes for easy transition 💕

We are 12 days old! Eyes are opening, some are starting to try to walk(wobble😉). We have been doing some early neurological stimulation along with many cuddle sessions, and nail clippings. Everyone including mama are doing very well. Our whelping box is next to our bed for continuous supervision as well as a camera for moments we have to step away. You may notice the fan on in the back. This is just on temporarily to aid in cooling the room while I’m there. Pups should not have any drafts and a source of heat for their first weeks when mama isn’t there to keep them nice and warm.

Why is it so important to keep pups warm?
Until pups can regulate their body temperature, they need to be nice and warm to help digestion, and keep energy for feeding instead of using their energy to keep themselves warm. Puppies can go downhill fast if not kept warm. Milk can also curdle in their tiny belly and can even be fatal. For the most part, mama takes great care and keeps them nice and toasty, but when she needs a well deserved break, having the extra source of heat is important. Now, they can be too hot as well, during the day the house can get warmer (this is the case here). So keeping an eye on how the puppies are acting and temp in the box is key.

That’s the lesson of the day for those who are curious! 😆

Mani Pedi day for the Lion King crew! Even at this age we start trimming nails. They grow very quickly and can start to hurt mama while nursing. Lots of snuggles from my great assistant Brett Cooper during the process, and some even slept through it 🥺

THE INVISIBLE SLIMY MONSTER IN THE WATER BOWL

Ever rub your fingers on the inside of your pet's water bowl and you feel a slippery slime of sorts? Well that invisible goo is called Biofilm.

Biofilm is a collection of organic and inorganic, living and dead materials collected on a surface. It is made up of many different types of bacteria bound together in a thick substance that acts as a glue to both hold the bacteria together and adhere it to a surface.

Biofilm can often be good bacteria but there is also the bad!

Biofilms provide a safe haven for organisms like Listeria, E. coli and legionella where they can reproduce to levels where contamination of products passing through that water becomes inevitable.

Bad Biofilms have been found to be involved in a wide variety of microbial infections in the body such as urinary tract infections, middle-ear infections and bladder infections.

Many pet parents are guilty of simply refilling the water bowl over and over without a wash and this becomes a wonderful environment for biofilm to soak around in.

How to reduce Biofilm:

Remember to clean your pet’s water bowl at least once a week if you can and change water daily.

For pet daycares where a host of different bacteria float around in water bowls, wash daily!

For best results, run your water bowls through a hot cycle in the dishwasher with an eco friendly, non-toxic soap to really clean out the biofilm!

Rodney Habib Pet Health Site

"An educated, informed and well-researched community of pet owners can only put more pressure on the pet food industry to be better! When pet owners know better, they will only do better!"

(P.S. - I am going to get lambasted over the "wash once a week at least" concept. However, after a wonderful discussion with a well known pro-active veterinarian/scientist, when she studied the bacteria looming in pets' water bowls she found if you have a healthy beast, biofilm can actually be full of wonderful, healthy bacteria. It's like playing in the mud as kids and having good bacteria all over you! So sometimes cleaning regularly can wash all the good stuff away. ;) )
