Monitors are as intelligent (if not more) than dogs. They also feel emotional attachment to their owners and show familiarity. They are also trainable ❤️

Just like furry companions, they enjoy attention and crave interaction.

This big baby is always looking for her cuddles 💕

They do require a lot of care and a very large enclosure. Monitors must also be socialized from a young age. I wouldn’t recommend the monitor class of reptiles for everyone. It’s a commitment and very demanding.

This is what months of progress looks like with green tree monitors.

Vash was wild caught and will probably never tolerate being fully handled. He’s bonded well enough with my husband to climb up onto his arm when fed mice. He tolerates me touching his claws and is okay with humans he knows coming into his space.

Fun facts:

1. Green trees don’t like drinking sitting water.
2. They like to burrow just as much as they like to climb.
3. They are extremely skittish by nature - and will not eat if they are scared or stressed.
4. A female and male may not pair up just because they co-habitat. Just like humans, they have preferences and need to bond.
5. Female green trees have bumps on their snouts for digging while males have smooth elongated snouts.
6. They need high humidity - about 70%.
7. Their diet consists of bugs, fish, eggs, small rodents, and even other lizards.
8. Green trees may play with their food before eating it. (Our male will proudly display his mice by running around the tank with it in his mouth to show off)
9. When they feel comfortable and safe they are playful.
10. Green trees come from New Guinea!

We get asked a lot - how do you tame down an aggressive baby bearded dragon?

Dragon can be born with a lot of attitude! They have a strong natural instinct for survival and may even lunge at your hand. Worst case scenario it’s just a lil pinch but they gotta show you they mean business.

Many dragons grow out of this with proper handeling. Unlike monitors and chameleons you can get right in there and start holding them from day one. The more you do the better.

See this guy? He’s always spicy, but calms down right away with a good snack!
