Happy 1st birthday to The Clinic Notebook! 📒🎉

1 year ago today was the official launch of The Clinic Notebook. In that time, we’ve reached over 30 states, 25 Vet Schools, and sold over 200 notebooks. More than 150 people have purchased a Clinic Notebook to help them learn and grow, professionally and personally.

Thank you all for supporting The Clinic Notebook over the last year. I am so glad to see The Clinic Notebook has made a positive impact on so many people, and will continue to help many more veterinary professionals in the future. I PASSED MY BOARDS!

8+ years of schooling and 12+ years of veterinary experience has culminated to this. So glad to have reached this milestone and pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE).

I have dreamed about this moment. ⁣
🐾⁣
Ever since I first started shadowing in a veterinary hospital and thought about what vet school would be like, this year was the experience I had envisioned. I imagined taking care of dogs, cats, horses, and even rabbits, birds, and snakes. I imagined learning from some of the smartest veterinarians in the profession and standing side by side with classmates who’ve worked extremely hard to reach this point. I imagined the high moments of successfully diagnosing and treating a patient, and the low moments of being unable to save one. While learning during pandemic and wearing facemask might not have been part of that vision, I am grateful to still have the opportunity for in-person clinical rotations. ⁣

Reaching today is a milestone, and it also the start of a new chapter in my veterinary career. One that I am extremely excited and eager to begin. I have always considered myself a hands-on learner who prefers to learn through cases. When we had a case-based course during the first two years at PVM, I loved every minute of it. Material was clicking, things were making sense, I was comfortable, and in the zone. Today, I start the real thing.⁣

Goodbye lecture halls and hello clinics!⁣

Today was my last final exam of my 3rd year of vet school! Typically on our last day of exams, our class will gather at the continuum and take pictures with a % sign that one of my classmates crafts to signify another completed milestone of veterinary school. Unfortunately, we did not get to do that this year, so a little bit of photoshop and design love will have to do!

It is very exciting to finally reach my clinical year, something I have been looking forward to since I was first accepted to Purdue. Coronavirus may have put a pause on our start date, but I am still just as excited to get in the clinic and continue learning! ⁣

All this at-home quarantine and finals studying definitely has me doing one thing more often now...procrastinating! ⁣

I have the best family ever. ⁣
⁣
Yesterday was supposed to be our White Coat Ceremony, but COVID can’t stop us from celebrating! This afternoon, my family surprised me with a Virtual White Coat Ceremony and had all of my extended family on Zoom tuning in. My dad had a speech prepared, my sister prepared a slideshow full of pictures, my mom ordered a white coat off Amazon, designed the invitation, and her mom created/ordered special cookies with personal pictures on them. After the speech, I received my coat and recited the Veterinarian’s Oath; just like I would have at the real event. ⁣
👨🏻‍⚕️⁣
This ceremony meant so much to me. My family, who was going to attend in person, were all there but in addition, this virtual ceremony allowed for most of my extended family to also join in the celebration. I am elated and overjoyed. During the ceremony, I was smiling from ear to ear.⁣

During these times, it is so important to continue to celebrate the monumental life occasions that unfortunately have been cancelled or postponed as a result of all this. I am appreciative of the extra time I have been able to spend at home with my family. My heart is full of happiness. ⁣

A very talented Italian Chef named Tony brings his brother Jim’s two dogs named Lady and Tramp in for their surgical procedures. After starting their own family, the brothers have decided it is time to spay and neuter Lady and Tramp. You perform a physical exam and pre-surgical bloodwork and determine that both Lady and Tramp are healthy and are good candidates for surgery! Later that morning, you perform successful surgery on both Lady and Tramp without any complications. When Tony and Jim come to pickup Lady and Tramp later in the evening, they cannot praise you enough! They even know it was your long shift day, and they even brought you some chicken parmesan for dinner!

A very curious Moana brings in her chicken named Heihei in to your clinic who appears to walk aimlessly and occasionally walk in circles. Moana proceeds to share how Heihei likes to eat random, inanimate objects and sometimes has trouble locating and picking up his food as well. You perform a physical exam and notice Heihei has lateral strabismus. Given the history Moana gave you, and his physical exam findings, what differentials are you considering and what tests would you perform to rule in/out a diagnosis?

Mickey Mouse brings in his dog Pluto for a wellness exam and vaccinations. After performing a physical exam, you determine Pluto is in excellent health! You give Pluto his vaccinations and he takes it like a champ. Mickey Mouse and Pluto are very happy they cannot wait to see you in one year for their next checkup!

Today marks the start of my last semester in the classroom. In just a few months, I will be in the teaching hospital starting my clinical rotations. I am ALMOST a veterinarian, and man it is exciting!!

This is probably the most excited I have been for a semester in my entire academic career. Why? Because all my classes are in my field of interest (small animal) and in topics that I want to learn more about!
