GOODBYE 2024
Can we just hold off on 2025 though? I need to take a breath.

I have to be honest 2024 has been… a lot. In one year we had a baby go from… baby… to toddler. What yours did that too? Madness!

We bought a house in July that was supposed to arrive in August that never came. 🫠 And we found out that our property is a HAIL sight. Hazardous Chemicals and Industries Location….. ⚠️ YEP! We haven’t spoken about this as it has been a HUGE heart break for us. 💔

We had our soil tested and there are high levels of arsenic on a large section of our property. A section that we, including baby Mae had been eating strawberries from 😱.

Despite all the stress, money sinking, research, and talking with lawyers about both the HAIL situation and our house not coming, we still managed to stay on top of the farm, work, and toddler dramas.

🏆 We had both a successful winter and summer garden. (We hosted some very lovely work aways that helped us out with the gardens.)

🏆 We took down the last old rotting greenhouse on the property and disposed of another skip full of rubbish.

🏆I worked on some fantastic projects with

🏆We completed an incredible project that won’t be revealed until 2026 ( sorry.)

🏆 We have been raising a pretty cool human child without any support. Yep just us 😐.( If you haven’t got kids yet, move close to friends and family.)

🏆And did our very best not to scream into our pillows every night after Mae finally went to sleep. 🙃

Yes those are trophies. I feel like we need a little something to keep us going!

Actually, I change my mind. Bring on 2025… I want my house.😑

Hope you all had a lovely break!!! As always, we are looking forward to hearing from you in comments and messages. 🤗

Thank you all for the great recipes and amazing encouragement and support.❤️

Sending love!

Ruby and Tristan.

It feels like we are picking the last of the summer crops… 😔

But then BOOM courgette comes back and starts growing mega veg!

Tristan and I are newbies to gardening so everything is an adventure. I also have terrible memory so if I learned something last year it’s still a surprise this year. 😐 Good thing I love surprises eh? 😅

I’m so proud of our garden! 👏 I just want to thank the ducks Rizzo, Cruise, Sunny, Dutchess, Lucy and Duckness. 🦆 The cows Koco, Amelia, Pepper. 🐄 The sheep Ping, Pongo and Percy. 🐑 For all their poops which has created fantastic compost for our garden.

Today we made our first batch of tomato chilli chutney and it was delicious! 🍅 🌶️ 🫙

Holy flipping heck! It’s been a year…. I started the year very nauseous half way through my pregnancy. I worked ( I’m a designer) up until my due date and Tristan kept on with the farm. He assembled/built a cabin, built an outdoor bathroom and created a grey water system. We experienced two cyclones and almost a week long power cut. We said good bye to our last rescue chicken Hei Hei, and welcomed Pepper the calf into the family. We were on the cover of the New Zealand Life style block magazine, and were guests on our first podcast. We had a successful winter and summer veggie garden, and planted a native garden. We had Tristan’s parents come to visit, and our first work aways come and help out on the farm. We have had the privilege of chatting to people from all over the world and even inspire a few people to live a more sustainable life, rescue an animal or two and or purchase land to regenerate. In June our baby girl was born which shifted my focus to entirely her, which meant a lot less stories and videos. I want to thank everyone who stuck with us for the sporadic updates, and I hope to bring you more delightful videos in 2024. We are grateful for the opportunity to share our little life on our odd little farm with all of you.

Stay safe, give what you can to those most in need, and enjoy the little things in life. Lots of love Ruby, Tristan and Mae.

Mae trying to take a nice photo of me and Baloo. 😂

(Joking, Mae is only 7 months old. She won’t be able to take photos for at least another… 4 months.)

Hope everyone has had a lovely Christmas! And Happy New Year just around the corner! Stay safe, be kind and share the silly photos.

Indi

Meet Indi, a nearly 2-year-old sweetheart with an affectionate and cuddly nature. She’s a quiet companion, content to share the couch and your lap, yet independent enough to explore and keep herself entertained. She’s on the smaller side of your typical cat but has a huge amount of love to give. Indi embodies the benefits of adopting an adult cat: she’s already settled into her gentle ways, ready to bring love and companionship to her new forever home.

Indi has an adopted brother Teddy who is also looking for a home. See other post.

Adopting an adult cat like Indi offers a myriad of benefits often overlooked in the rush for kittens. Mature cats come with established personalities, making it easier to find a feline friend whose temperament aligns with your lifestyle. They tend to be less destructive and have mastered the essentials like litter training. Adult cats are also tragically the hidden gems of rescues, frequently overshadowed by their younger counterparts, yet they hold just as much potential for companionship and love. By choosing an adult cat, you’re not just gaining a pet; you’re giving a second chance at a loving home to a deserving soul.

Located Maungaturoto Northland New Zealand

Indie is fixed, vaccinated and free to adopt.

Message me if interested.

Teddy

Meet Teddy, a handsome, independent 1 year old. He’ll have you wrapped around his little paw with his bouts of affection which happen totally on his terms. He loves the great outdoors and would make an excellent farm cat.

He has an adopted sister Indie, see other post.

When I first moved from England to NZ, I used to quite dislike bearded lichen, more commonly know as old man’s beard (not the noxious w**d).
But as I watch it appear on our fruit trees I have to admit it’s really quite cute and it’s growing on me too. - Tree

This is my first Shish*to harvest from seedlings I germinated in the greenhouse over winter! Love it when a plan comes together. Oo and some sneaky cherry tomatoes coming nearby. Self seeded in the greenhouse from last summers vines.
We are really starting to get excited about about summer and all that it brings.
It’s possible that it’s my favourite time of year.
What’s your favourite season and why? - Tristan

This is the first year we have had two established passionfruit vines in our greenhouse and boy are we excited about the volume of fruit that’s starting to grow.
Aside from how delicious the fruit itself is, it’s also just great being able to go and see these crazy, beautiful and weird flowers most evenings.
If you want to give growing Passionfruit a go, then I recommend a very warm spot with good access to water.

Tropical food forest in New Zealand!

Tristan and I are working towards something similar on a smaller scale. Is this your dream too? Have you got a food forest yourself? Or is this all new to you? Looking forward to reading your comments!

Does anyone else laugh at cat memes and think -“ Hahaha so true… but not my cats, they are so needy and loving, and they are often by my side. But yeah, cats in general… probably.” ?

Funny yes… accurate, maybe not?
