Demonstrating the belly lift” and “quarter stretch” on my 22 year old client, Drifter. I like to compare these stretches to crunches and squats. The “belly lift” opens up the shoulders, activates the core and lifts the back into it’s natural position; I like to do this in sets of 10 during grooming or right before you cinch up the saddle (it lifts the back into the saddle for a better and more comfortable fit). The “quarter stretch” stretches and rounds out the gluteal muscles, which will improve impulsion of the hindquarters. I recommend doing this in sets of 3, holding for 5 seconds each.

Today was an emotional day for me. One of my very special clients, Destinio Mio, and his owner are off for a new adventure in Tennessee! I got to the stable a couple of hours before the transport service was scheduled to pick up Mio for his road trip and gave him one final relaxing therapeutic massage to keep him relaxed on his journey. I’ll miss you Mio and all of your cuddles, but best be sure I’ll be visiting you in Tennessee! 💖

It may have been 105 degrees out yesterday, but these are the faces of two happy boys! Wylie, such a ham during his massage. Horses, like people, enjoy varying degrees of pressure. This horse likes deep tissue and leans in with all of his weight 😆

Recent studies conducted by the Institute of HeartMath provide a clue to explain the bidirectional "healing" that happens when we are near horses. According to researchers, the heart has a larger electromagnetic field and higher level of intelligence than the brain: A magnetometer can measure the heart's energy field radiating up to 8 to 10 feet around the human body. While this is certainly significant it is perhaps more impressive that the electromagnetic field projected by the horse's heart is five times larger than the human one (imagine a sphere-shaped field that completely surrounds you). The horse's electromagnetic field is also stronger than ours and can actually directly influence our own heart rhythm!
Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a "coherent" heart rhythm (heart rate pattern) which explains why we may "feel better" when we are around them. . . .studies have found that a coherent heart pattern or HRV is a robust measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy--that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.
A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adjust to stressful situations very efficiently. Often times, we only need to be in a horses presence to feel a sense of wellness and peace. In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits while interacting with horses, including lowered blood pressure and heart rate, increased levels of beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters that serve as pain surppressors), decreased stress levels, reduced feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, improved social functioning; and increased feelings of empowerment, trust, patience and self-efficacy."

Some of my favorite regulars at the Lakewood Equestrian Center. Poncho, my 34 year old man, loves getting his therapeutic massage every 2 weeks. And then we have Lovey, who is 8 months into her recovery from sunken laminitis and doing AMAZINGLY. The big sleepy Warmblood is Mio, eager for his monthly sports massage. Finally, Bear got his first equine sports massage today and loved every minute. So thankful for the work I get to do and for the wonderful horses and people it has brought into my life.

Cold laser treatment for Jaxen today before his sports massage. I doubled up his treatment with the blue and red laser to increase circulation and reduce inflammation before I did myofascial release and a full body 60 minutes sports massage. It is important to have a game-plan for which colored laser is most beneficial and for which accupoints or muscle groups to target and treat with the laser in order to best benefit your horse’s specific needs. Some lasers can be too stimulating for certain horses, or even for certain injuries. As an experienced equine bodyworker, I am very in-tune to any signs of discomfort and am able to adapt and ease each horse into treatment on their terms.

This handsome stallion is Secreto, an Andalusian/Costa Rican Saddle Horse cross. His owner contacted me after Secreto slipped in some wet footing and pulled a muscle in his left gluteus muscle. I started his session with an essential oil treatment, followed by a full body sports massage (excluding the area with the muscle pull). Afterwards I did a targeted cold laser treatment over the injured area. He was an amazing patient, can’t wait to work with him again.

For the last week and a half I have been working with this “Big Boy” Affirmed’s Spirit, grandson of Triple Crown Winner, Affirmed. Over the last week we have been gradually introducing him to massage and touch therapy, and he is very apprehensive about having his tense hindquarters “messed with”. Today I did a laser therapy treatment along his topline, and concentrated on his hindquarters. He found the red laser to be too stimulating on his hindquarters, so I used the blue laser and we will work our way towards the red laser. So happy to get to work with this wonderful thoroughbred and his owner!

Horses are athletes, no matter their age, they benefit from massage for a variety of reasons

whether the goal is to prevent injury, treat an injury, increase circulation and performance, in addition to a list of many other benefits. Sports massage is a systematic process focusing on all of the muscle groups and pressure points in a specific approach. I provide massage and oil treatments for horses to prepare them for shows, chiropractic adjustments, dental appointments, to treat pain and injury, and as a way to maintain a horse’s overall health and prevent injury.

What makes me the most proud about what I do, is that I get to help animals feel their best while educating owners about the many health benefits of massage and oils-- this is extremely rewarding. Additionally, when I created my business I decided to set aside one day each month to donate my services to a horse in need, whether it is helping out the equine community in the event of a natural disaster, to providing a massage to a rescue horse, or a retired pasture horse; I call this “Hoof N Paw gives back”.
