️⃣ Along with the recall cue , your dog should ALSO have a strong attention cue as well as a less - formal " come " cue . These two skills are crucial supplements in a plan to build a strong , reliable recall !
️⃣ Determine and use your dog's HIGHEST value reward ! This might be a hot dog , an awesome toy , or even a cue that begins a favorite game .
️⃣ Start out indoors or on - leash ! One of my favorite tools for practicing off - leash recall is actually a 30 - ft leash , which helps to simulate freedom but still allows for safe management , Gradually build up to more challenging contexts !
️⃣ NEVER use the recall cue to " trick " your dog into coming . The key to a strong recall is to use it when it's followed by great things ! In the rare event that you MUST recall your dog for something unpleasant in an urgent situation , you'll be glad that your dog feels no conflict about responding .
️⃣ Don't overuse it ! Recall should be an exciting , rare opportunity for a jackpot . I myself try to use my dog's recall only once per day , now that it's been conditioned . This also helps to ensure that I'm very judicious about WHEN I'm using my dog's recall ! In addition , this prevents the feeling that I'm " nagging " my dog with frequent requests . I want pure enthusiasm each time !
