Irene began rescuing in Edmonton, Alberta in the early 2000's when it was found that those living on the military base where she and her family were stationed would often have to surrender animals due to postings. As someone who had grown up consistently around animals, it was difficult for her to see them frequently rehomed, shelter surrendered, and sometimes abandoned out of necessity. She opene
d her doors to the surrenders, and word quickly got around the small base that if you were unable to bring a loved pet with you anywhere, she would be the one to go to, and she would not ever leave them without a home beyond that. Now many years later, as a mother and grandmother, Irene has raised a family that loves animals with all the same care and respect as any other family member. We recognize wholeheartedly that the number of animals in our care is a lot. This is why the family shares all base care responsibilities between six adults in the household, and the primary care focus of each animal is delegated to a Key person in whatever way is best for the animal. We have a couple of personal pets among the pack, and we also have taken in any of the rescues as just as personal. The training is consistent and agreed upon throughout the home, though adapted to different animals. Each animal's Key person is primarily responsible for most training decisions (including therapeutic care for the dog) and special care, as well as more individual base care such as walks. Animals are susceptible to mental illness and trauma, just as people are. It is with this in mind that certain animals may be with certain Key persons, which we find has been a helpful focus for the animals. Rules and Regulations:
○ All of our animals are fully licensed and registered as per the Calgary Registration Bylaw.
○ All animals recieve yearly vet checkups and are kept up to date on all vaccines.
○ Animals that come to the sanctuary remain at the sanctuary; we are a til-death location.
