We’ve had a few inquiries about treats for Christmas so I thought I should give a little update! Addie’s arthritis has been doing something in her elbow (waiting on an MRI) that has been causing her a decent amount of pain since late summer. Unfortunately the treat making process is very hands on and causes her too much pain. Hopefully in a few months her elbow will be all sorted out and she can get back on track. Have you heard about the yet? Bluetick Biscuits will be there! Unfortunately we can’t make the grand opening BUT we’ll be there June 13! We can’t wait to see you there! We greatly appreciate all the love and patience as we have learned to navigate this new journey with juvenile arthritis ❤️ we are 3 months into her most recent treatment and have a follow up with BCCH in mid June to see how things are going 🤞🏻 Until then, she will be slowly plugging away, making treats to be all stocked up for June 13! 😃

It’s almost been a full year since Addie got to bring home her baby! While she’s working on a plan to keep making treats while managing her JIA, here’s some info on it!

Among many things, March is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month! We have our follow up with BCCH this week and since Addie is and our here’s some info to help spread awareness!

What is it?
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common type of arthritis in kids and teens. It typically causes joint pain and inflammation in the hands, knees, ankles, elbows and/or wrists. But, it may affect other body parts too . JIA used to be called juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), but the name changed because it is not a kid version of the adult disease. (Also not similar to osteoarthritis)

What does it do?
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) types are autoimmune or autoinflammatory diseases. That means the immune system, which is supposed to fight invaders like germs and viruses, gets confused and attacks the body’s cells and tissues . This causes the body to release inflammatory chemicals that attack the synovium (tissue lining around a joint). It produces fluid that cushions joints and helps them move smoothly. An inflamed synovium may make a joint feel painful or tender, look red or swollen or difficult to move.

What are the symptoms?
* Joint pain or stiffness; may get worse after waking up or staying in one position too long.
* Red, swollen, tender or warm joints.
* Reduced growth
* Muscles and other soft tissues around the joint may weaken.
* Feeling very tired or rundown (fatigue).
* Blurry vision or dry, gritty eyes.
* Some children with juvenile arthritis have eye inflammation, called uveitis which can cause blindness is left undetected/untreated.
* Rash.
* Appetite loss.
* High fever.

Treatment:
There is no cure for JIA but remission (little or no disease activity or symptoms) is possible. Early aggressive treatment is key to getting the disease under control as quickly as possible.
