Spent some time at First Choice Farm in Maryland with Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel, Dressage Training. I only have a handful of photos and videos, I was too busy enjoying the experience.

I had a blast riding Katie Sheahan’s young mare Athena down in Texas. She’s a big girl with a lot to offer and I’m so excited to watch Katie and Athena grow together. Thanks Roby Moreland for getting this girl started, now she’s ready for her career in dressage!
Every time you ride it’s important to feel where your horse is at in the basics before getting into more complex things and as we all know…the basics are everything. Check in with your horse; are they lazy? Hot? Flexible? Stiff? Anxious? I try to have a rough plan in mind before the ride but depending on what my horse feels like, I may choose certain exercises over others. Don’t open a can of worms you can’t put the lid on, it can make both you and your horse frustrated/nervous if you take the wrong path.
Find the open doors and be understanding of your horses limitations that day.
In hand work
In hand work can be so helpful, not only for the horse but for rider as well. You can play with the feel and watch what happens in the horse’s body and adjust accordingly.
Miss Stella
Stella has been working so hard and I couldn’t be more proud. Thank you Jamie Reynolds for sharing your girl with me! 💕
Let’s talk priorities. This mare has nice big gaits but she’s only two and she doesn’t really understand how to stay with her person yet so a lot of times the energy squirts out in all directions and becomes a little wild. When she’s relaxed and with me then I can ask for bigger energy. If I just push her, the energy will become too hectic.
Katie Sheahan you have such a smart girl. She’s going places!
Are you tired of winter?
Winter weather wearing you out? Trust me, I’m not ok either. And let’s face it, it’s alright. We shouldn’t put so much pressure on ourselves. But if you want to keep chiseling away at your goals, here’s a few ideas to keep you going.
1. Groundwork/in-hand work- it can expand your relationship and you’ll notice things that translate to being in the saddle. If you have Murdoch Method LLC Sure Foot pads that is a great winter activity as well.
2. Review videos- this is not to be critical of yourself but to make a plan and improve. Your self talk should be as if you were talking to a fellow riding buddy.
3. Take an online course- Susanne von Dietze has some great courses but there are tons of options for every flavor out there!
4. Rider workout/body awareness- there’s tons of options from strength training to gentle yoga or somatics. You can find a program or you can watch for free on YouTube.
5. Read or listen to horse content-Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel has written some great articles and produced some podcast episodes that can be found on www.firstchoicefarms.com under affiliations/publications but again you find whatever flavor you’re looking for and settle in!
Let me know in the comments if there’s something that helps you through the winter blues.
Having a plan for your ride can be helpful but In the flip of a coin it can also be harmful. Your sticky thoughts can get in the way of your feel in the saddle. You need to be the opportunist in one situation and a listener and shape shifter in the next.
Thank you Kathryn Bono for allowing me to play with your amazing boy Gentil!
