We got the greenhouses up and loaded with some trays to get our plants started. So far we have Tomatoes (hulk & san mazano), Peppers (Tabasco, Cayenne, jalapeno, habanero, serrano, thai, Bulgarian, Red Sweet) , Cauliflower, Broccoli, Brussel Sprots, an area of herbs, lettuces, and a variety of flowers.

Few picks of the gardens ... hostas are coming up, garlic and onions that we missed picking last fall are coming up, and the rhubarb is coming in strong.

Busy weekend at the Backyard Urban Homestead.

We did lots of transplanting (Cayenne Peppers & Hostas) ... and there is more to do this week.

Red & Green peppers were planted as were Hungarian Hot Peppers. The Black Beans we planted earlier this week are growing strong.

More transplanting planned for this week.

We got the exhaust on the maple syrup evaporator and the transformer and pump for the new reverse osmosis system. A few more small projects and we will be ready for the maple syrup season.

This weeks update
Our first Jalapeno has popped its head up!
The Cayenne, Romain, and Arugula are growing strong!
Cilantro is coming along as well.
Hostas are growing and I'm hoping in a month or so to transplant them to bigger pots. I'm really enjoy watching their progress ... usually I just split my hostas and replant in that fashion. First time I have collected and started from their seeds.
Soon to be planted are the red and green peppers.

And of course ... hopefully the sap will start running in 3 or so weeks!!! We are working on our new syrup evaporator and reverse osmosis system ... check the projects out either The Backyard Urban Homestead or https://thebackyardurbanhomestead.com/.../maple-syrup.../

The cayenne peppers are doing very well ... we have replanted the empty cells that did not sprout.
Spinach, arugula, and Romain are coming along.

Cilantro has sprouted.

The jalapeno and poblano have no sprouts yet ... hoping in the next week or so to see some pop up.

Getting strawberries ready for a quick stay into the fridge before going into the green house.

The hostas are going well … I have reseeded the empty cells so hopefully we get some more starting up in the next few weeks. If you would like some please reach out to us to pre-order

Lettuce, Arugala , and spinach are coming along. I have reseeded the empty cells in the hopes of getting more seedlings to come along. These are going to be used for our self fertilizing and small garden towers.

Hot peppers … We’ve seen some seedlings start for the cayenne peppers but nothing yet for the poblano or jalapeño peppers.

Check out our website for seeds, plants, gardens (both tower and raised), farm share, and updates on our projects!

We’ve Planted our hot peppers to get them an early start to the growing season.

Planted so far are jalapenos, poblano, and cayenne. I know … I know … those are not overly hot but not everyone in our family enjoys spicey. I’m looking to get a couple of spicier types to make some homemade hot sauce.

Cilantro was also started … we use a lot of it in our cooking and preserving

We are considering starting a CSA for The Backyard Urban Homestead and want to see the what the Interest may be.

CSA is a direct connection to your food and farmer while building community and local food.

The basis of our CSA is a 16-week Vegetable Box packed with bright, flavourful vegetables that we pick at peak readiness.

The cost will be $500 for the season ($31.25/week) and for every 10 shares we will donate a CSA to the Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen Community Centre.

Also our CSA members will have the opportunity to enjoy discounts on other Backyard Urban Homestead products/offerings.

Individuals who sign up now will be the first to get shares if we move ahead.
