As we deal with the inclement weather, make sure your horse continues to have:

1. Access to fresh water πŸ’§πŸ’§πŸ’§- top tips:
- keep water tepid if possible to reduce the risk of colic. Buying pond heaters is a good way to reduce frozen water in troughs!
- no electricity near your troughs? You can buy flotation balls for your troughs which horses can use to break up the ice easier
- long-term planning: watch where direct sunlight hits the ground for the longest in winter and move your troughs to that location in Springtime!

2. access to forage - top tips:
- horses digest fibre via a process of fermentation in the caecum that generates lots of heat which is the main way that helps keep horses warm naturally in the winter
- older horses or horses with poor dental health may struggle to forage through the snow to find grass
- even if they are turned out 24/7, make sure they have ample forage in the form of hay during heavy snowfall to ensure they can continue to trickle feed and stay warm!

3. freedom of movement - top tips:
- movement is very important for circulatory and metabolic health
- horses do less damage when the ground is frozen versus wet weather
- even having turnout on areas of hardstanding can make a big difference to horses who would otherwise be stabled. An area of 100 square metres per horse is ideal to avoid fighting or accidents
- limited on options? Even if you cannot ride safely in this weather, even taking your horse out for a walk in-hand or doing groundwork in-hand can be very beneficial for them :)
