Fun Fact: Your dog's fee DO smell like Frito's!

Ever notice how Fido’s feet smell like Fritos? That signature stink is a byproduct of the natural bacteria found on a dog’s feet: Proteus bacteria, known for producing a sweet, corn tortilla smell, and Pseudomonas bacteria, which give off a slightly sweeter, popcorn-like odor.

These bacteria make their way from soil into the crevices of your pooch’s paws, and the smell is perfectly normal. Sometimes however, it can indicate infection. If you notice your dog is excessively licking their feet, has greasy paws, or has inflammation in between their toes, you might want to take them to the vet.

Christmas Dinner for your Dog?

What you CAN feed them:
• Turkey: Yes, dogs can eat turkey as long as it’s boneless and skinless.
• Cranberry Sauce: Yes, only if it is unsweetened and with no added nuts. Avoid giving too much but a dash over a slice of Turkey will be a tasty treat that your dog will love.
• Potatoes: Yes, only mashed or boiled potatoes are safe for your dog to eat and ensure that you haven’t added lots of butter or salt before offering them to your dog.
• Other vegetables: Green beans, brussel sprouts, parsnips, peas can all be fed as a tasty and healthy snack. However, be sure to feed vegetables in moderation.

What you CANNOT feed them:
• Gravy: NO!, it’s far too salty and fatty for them.
• Stuffing: NO!, stuffing contains onions, spices and herbs.
• Christmas pudding and mince pies: NO!, both of these contain lots of currants, sultanas and raisins which are all highly toxic for your dog.
• Chocolate: NO!, Chocolate is highly toxic to dogs and even small amounts can be fatal.
• Onions, garlic and bulb vegetables: NO!, all of these vegetables are from the Allium species of plants and are highly toxic to dogs.
• Macadamia nuts and walnuts: NO!, they’re highly toxic as they contain a toxin that can cause neurological problems or seizures in dogs.
• Milk and dairy: NO!, dogs find it difficult to digest lactose and large amounts of dairy can cause stomach upsets.

Nothing can spoil holiday cheer like an emergency visit to a veterinary clinic. These seven tips can help prevent a holiday disaster with your pets.

Keep people food out of the reach of your pet, and ask your guests to do the same.

Make sure your pet doesn't have any access to treats, especially those containing chocolate, xylitol, grapes/raisins, onions or other toxic foods.

Don't leave your pet alone in the room with lit candles, a decorated tree or potpourri.

Keep holiday plants (especially holly, mistletoe and lillies) out of reach of pets.

Consider leaving the tinsel off your tree if you have a cat.

Secure your Christmas tree to keep it from falling over if your dog bumps it or your cat climbs it. Hanging lemon-scented car air fresheners in the tree may deter your cat from climbing it.

Provide a safe place for your pet to escape the excitement (such as a kennel, crate, perching place, scratching post shelf or hiding place) if you’re entertaining guests. If your pet is excitable or scared, consider putting your pet in another room with some toys and a comfortable bed.
