Our Dandy girl crossed over the rainbow bridge yesterday. The vet had her aged at 35 years old. I think she may have been a few years younger. Regardless, she had arthritis throughout her spine. She would stand with her hind legs crossed and could hardly make it up our little hill.
It's so hard to let them go when their mind still works. She was a sweet, sweet mare. She had been with us almost 10 years.
I asked God for forgiveness as I feel so guilty having the vet put her down. I am sure it doesn't get easier for him either. I consider the vet an angel of mercy.
I do know it was the right thing to do as I didn't wake up worried about Dandy.
I realized my sanctuary is a retirement/old folks home. I actually knew it, but these kind of days are the reminder. The horses previous owners should be having to do this instead of leaving the task for those of us in rescue.
For those of you who keep their horses and animals to their last breath, bless your hearts, and thank you.
I have five more that are right around 30ish. I just hope their time isn't soon. Two in two months is too much.
RIP my beautiful Dandelion.

Our sweet Lilly has crossed the rainbow bridge. We thought we were going to lose her last year, then she rebounded. This year, she lost a lot of weight, again, and was separated from the herd . We knew this year she needed to be set free. In the meantime, we were trying to get her weight back up. We were not getting the same results like last year. We were going to get the hole dug ahead of time, before the ground freezes here. Lilly called her own time. She went down on Monday and she couldn't get back up. She tried several times and couldn't manage to get her rear end up. Lilly had neurological damage to her hind end years ago. In addition, she had a tear in her pectoral muscle that the vet said would be fine, not to stitch up. Honestly, I think that was a bad call on his part. She never had the same strength in her front left leg because of the muscle damage. Ten years ago, it was not so noticeable, but as she aged it was obvious that a hole in a pectoral is not good, no matter how small. Those muscles support the forelimbs.
I made the call to the vet. Dr. Kelly, from Tammany Vet, who came out to put her to rest. RIP our sweet Lilly.

We have most of our hay for the winter stored at the sanctuary. . We have around 10 more tons coming soon.

We have fires at both ends of our valley. It's much worse today.
🙏🙏🙏Pray for rain and no more lightening or crazy winds. The storms have been crazy when they come through.

This is Winston. The puppy I adopted from a person who rescued him from a street person. He is almost 4 months old now. He picks on the cats constantly
It's a good thing that a couple of our cats are tolerant of his bad behavior. Occasionally, one cat will slap him a good one.
I sent off for his DNA to figure out what he is. Chihuahua was my first thought, but who knows. When you start looking at puppy pictures of different breeds, he looks like several different breeds.

Oregon Coast Aquarium
Rescued otters❤️

Not horses :)
I have to go to California. I am driving and decided to stop at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. If you have never been, you should stop in. It's. It's a small aquarium, but worth it. The aquarium is a non-profit.
All of these otters are rescues. They work with the Monterey Bay Aquarium rehabilitation program.
Did you know all the sea otters along the Oregon coast were wiped out? There are plans to re-introduce them.
I wish humans would respect nature.

Feeding time, we have used most of last year's hay.
Most hay suppliers get two cuttings a year on our side of Montana. It's best to stock up if you have the money. Suppliers tend to raise their prices over the winter. Or worse, they run out of hay.
The same hay we buy in August can go up significantly by January or February. I try to have 60 ton of hay purchased by October.

We have baby goslings in our irrigation pond.
Every year this pair of geese comes out to the property and the dad waits patiently as the mom sits on the eggs. We don't know where she keeps her nest. I was just saying earlier today that we never see their babies. I spotted them on my way home from town. I was so happy they finally blessed us with bringing their babies here.
I couldn't get any closer so you will just have to look closely. Five babies ❤️
