An update regarding Dinga: 🐕

She has been taken to Michigan with transportation expenses from Canada being generously covered by friends. While she is thriving in her new environment, she continues to require a suitable permanent home. Your assistance in sharing her photos with potential candidates would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

A qualified person to own a New Guinea Singing Dog should exhibit the following characteristics:

1. Experience with Dogs: Handle dogs ideally through prior dog ownership. Singing Dogs are complex and involve a high level of care.

2. Active Lifestyle: These dogs are energetic and require regular physical activity. An active owner is more likely to satisfy this need.

3. Commitment to Training: Essential for these intelligent, sometimes independent dogs. It should preferably be positive reinforcement training.

4. Long-term Financial Stability: Owning a dog involves significant financial commitments such as food, grooming, veterinary care, and potential emergencies.

5. Adequate Living Space: New Guinea Singing Dogs, while small, need space to move freely. A home with a spacious backyard is beneficial.

6. Time Availability: Like all dogs, they require companionship and do not appreciate being left alone for long periods.

7. Patience and Tolerance: These dogs are known for their unique and frequent vocalizations. Owners should be tolerant and find the behavior charming, not annoying.

8. Commitment to Lifelong Care: Owners should be ready to care for the dog for its entire life, which can span over 15 years.

9. Never without a leash, unless when in a secured fenced-in area: It means if they are left without supervision in the the yard, it should mean a non-chain link, a high wooden fence, possibly with even extra security at the bottom to prevent digging out since they are excellent climbers. Electric fences do NOT work for them.

After spending a few years with these dogs, to me, the only thing that matters is for them to be healthy, and to keep the breed going.

We have met some great individuals who are passionate about them and learn from some of the organizations that are involved with them. The organization working with Singers outside of the US is The New Guinea Highland Wild Dog Foundation. Although I don't call them wild dogs, their work can really help the much-needed diverse genes to help with the inbreeding situation in the captive population in the US.

They were established in 2016 after confirming a viable population of free-living dogs in the highlands of West Papua. Their mission is to facilitate the study and conservation of the dogs in the wild while establishing and maintaining a healthy captive population reservoir. They work together with some of the world's leading canid scientists, especially those that study dingoes.

When I asked them about why they call them wild, they explained that their use of the term Highland Wild Dog or wild dog is due to the fact that the dogs they study are living wild, and HWD is a historical name that the people of New Guinea use to describe the dog.

Their research is important to a healthy captive population. I hope their organization can successfully succeed with their goals in PNG, bringing a long-lasting future for our Singers here in the US.

BREAKING NEWS

After 236 years of persecution of Dingoes on the Australian mainland, the Australian Dingo Foundation wants to extend a sincere congratulations to the Premier Jacinta Allan and the Victorian Labour Government for taking the groundbreaking step forward in the protection of Dingoes in Victoria's north west.

'Effective from 14 March, the dingo unprotection order will conclude in north west Victoria - this decision follows new research, strong advice and the effectiveness of non-lethal dingo control methods to protect livestock.'

This move means that Dingoes in the region will be fully protected on both public and private lands with farmers requiring an Authority to Control Wildlife Permit to use lethal control methods.

'Farmers in this area will be supported by a $550,000 investment to adopt alternate non-lethal control methods via a pilot of measures, such as exclusion fencing and guardian animals.'

'Dingoes play an important role in the ecosystem and the latest ... data shows the dingo population in the north west is at risk of extinction, with as few as 40 dingoes left.'

Credit goes to the wonderful DNA research of Dr Kylie Cairns that alerted the Victorian government that this population was not only 100% pure but also genetically distinct and critically endangered.

A special mention to Stuart Harradine and the Wotjobaluk Nations for their tireless efforts in fighting for protection for their totem 'Wilkerr' (Dingoes) on what is and always will be Wotjobaluk Country.

As a next step forward, we call for a complete repeal of the unprotection Order in Council across the remnant populations of Dingoes in the remainder of Victoria.

We are going to miss them, but they are in great homes now ❤️

We had the opportunity to raise and place 3 NGSD. We have never done this before, but because of great friends everything went great🤝🏼.
We worked really hard to find the best homes for them 🏡
They went home with all of their shots completed. They got some gift bags and they now have a new network of people that will be there for them when needed.

Enjoy your new family adition!
