Farewell, Hagen New Guinea Singing Dog
Part of providing a caring home for animals across their lifetime is deciding with love and compassion when it’s time to let them go. As a proud “retirement home” to many senior residents, we unfortunately sometimes lose several beloved animals in a short time span.
Today, it’s with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Hagen New Guinea Singing Dog (NGSD) on July 29, 2025, at age 16. The usual life expectancy for a NGSD in human care is up to around 15 years, and as an elderly gent, Hagen was experiencing a strong decline in his comfort and quality of life. So, our animal care and veterinary teams made the hard decision to let him pass peacefully.
Hagen joined us at the Park in 2018 when he retired from his job as an educational animal for another facility. We were thrilled to offer him a forever home.
NGSDs are, of course, known for their “singing,” but Hagen was a triple threat. Besides his distinctive, throaty voice, he also demonstrated talent with dance moves like “The Happy Hagen Trot”—and showed a distinct flair for the dramatic.
Hagen enjoyed creating his own performances at open-park events, often involving his food puzzles. He would paw at the puzzle, bark, yelp, and carry on, looking at the crowd to elicit sympathy, acting as if HE JUST COULDN’T DO IT and HAD NEVER EATEN A TREAT BEFORE IN HIS LIFE. His longtime human friend (and NGSD specialist) would have to explain to guests that Hagen knew very well how to work the puzzle … but he also knew how to work her, and the crowd.
Hagen’s charisma and charm will never be forgotten by the many keepers and interns (past and present), other staff, volunteers, and tour guests who numbered among his two-legged admirers. As always, we appreciate the support of our Park community at this difficult time.
