De-douchefy science based dog training đđť
This time I'm addressing the broader question of whether or not there is scientific consensus on dog training methods.
The answer is no. I will continue to review publications and at the end of the series, I will provide a conclusion and working framework for science based dog training.
The question of ethics came up a few times. Are ethics and science two different things? I don't think so. Scientific progress and findings are always guided by ethical considerations, keeping the welfare of affected individuals in mind. Ethics are baked into the broader question of what science can guide us for.
But more importantly, this is the body of scientific evidence used to put laws and policies in place. Let's rethink!
However, individuality is a different story...

Here are 3 powerful tips to break out of any box
1) Look at meta-analyses and reviews. Understand the trend of scientific findings and how knowledge evolved. Don't just rely on the newest studies.
2) If skilled and reputable trainers, experts, or scientists share a different view than yours, ask yourself why that is. Accept that we just might not know yet what "the best" solution is. Fake experts will leverage "not knowing" and promise quick fixes and miracles. Don't fall for that.
3) Many behaviors we're interested in as trainers are conserved across species. So look at what we know about to understand fundamental concepts of behavior.
And above all, you don't need a PhD to know that consistency and commitment to exercise, a healthy diet, and clear communication are incredibly powerful.

Desexing your dog can be a disaster for your dogâs body. Type âhealthâ in the comments to get a full summary and all references I used in my latest YouTube video where I dive into the biology of neutering and spaying.
1ď¸âŁ there is no optimal age for desexing your dog. Taking out an entire organ that produces important hormones is never great! Do it too early and you put your dog at much higher risk for arthritis, cancer, and loss of muscle tone later in life. Wait as long as you can but a minimum of two years!
2ď¸âŁ alternative methods like vasectomies and hesectomies are efficient and keep your dogâs natural hormone balance intact. The reason why your vet is not offering it is because they donât learn that procedure in the U.S. But thatâs changing. Ask your vet about it.
3ď¸âŁ Desexing does not fix aggression. It never has and it never will. Testosterone can only exaggerate what is already there. But it doesnât cause aggression. Period.
