Got back from a week in Newcastle playing Miss Hannigan in Annie to find that Tom Tom, one of my pigs had been put to sleep. I knew it was coming as he'd been diagnosed with a tumour but even so it's awful when you lose a pet.
He was the cheekiest of the gang and one of the other pigs who was obviously very fond of him is now depressed and gone into mourning and there's those who say that animals don't have feelings. On a lighter note I'm thoroughly enjoying playing Hannigan again after so long especially with a truly amazing and lovely cast. Next stop Edinburgh.

I know I shouldn't have favourites but me and the lovely Lotus here seriously bonded.
Before she came here to Boon Lott's Elephant
Sanctuary her life was one of unspeakable cruelty that I find too upsetting to talk about. She now lives the best life in comfort and safety with two other elderly elephants. This trio are known as
'The Gossip Girls. BLES was founded by Katherine Connor from Essex who came here backpacking in her early 20's and never went back. She was so affected by the death of a baby elephant she'd been caring for she set up BLES in his honour. It does your heart good to be around Katherine and her staff and if you want to learn more about their work then have a look at their website.

Here's another beautiful elephant. Her names Pun and before she came here to the Wildlife Friends Foundation she'd been used for breeding, her babies were taken away from her and then sold. She's got a lovely nature and as it's her 37th Birthday today we made her a very special elephant birthday cake. The second photo shows her demolishing said cake

These two dogs are paraplegics after being hit by either a car or a motorbike. Chris from the Uk came over as a volunteer and years later he's still here caring for these dogs along with his team. Dogs are so resilient and can adapt to anything as these sets of wheels prove. They tear around the place with not a bother on them

Great night at the Victoria and Albert Museum for their Re:Imagining Musicals Exhibition with all manner of costumes and theatrical memorabilia from down the ages on display. I'm looking embarrassed as I didn't want my photo taken but I'm standing in front of my Miss Hannigan costume from Annie at The Victoria Palace in 1998. It's a great exhibition but I released when we went for a meal afterwards that I'm now a museum piece! Great to catch up with the legend that is Bonnie Langford as well

I had the pleasure of getting to know Barney today. He's a beautiful Lurcher who has a big fan club amongst the staff here at Battersea and it's easy to see why. For some reason Lurchers are hard to re-home and this gentle fella could really do with finding a forever home for Christmas. He really is a delight

Guess where I am? This little one has got a home but there's lots of Greyhounds here who haven't. The misconception about Greyhounds is that they need lots of exercise (they don't) and that they're not very cuddly (believe me they are). They also have lovely natures so if you're thinking of getting a rescue then maybe think about a Greyhound or a Lurcher

This is what happens when you go for a drink after rehearsals with your producer and after being plied with whisky you'd agree to play a nun in the Sound of Music let alone Miss Hannigan. The last time I was in this show was 1998 playing Hannigan again and then on tour, job sharing with Lesley Joseph. Annie is hitting the road again next year for a National Tour but I'm only doing 6 dates as I've got other commitments but I've got to say I'm really looking forward to it as it's such a great show. Anyway, I'll be in Newcastle, Edinburgh, Southampton, Liverpool, Dublin and Bristol and these dates are scattered throughout the year.

I'm afraid I'm on the plug. I've written another Eddie Albert book for my sins, it came out a fortnight ago but it didn't seem appropriate at such a time to be plugging books so I'm doing it now. The last one was set in Amsterdam but the setting is closer to home this time as i've set it on The Romney Marshes. There's lots of new characters including a French lop eared rabbit who thinks he's a star as he once appeared in a toilet roll commercial.I'm at the Wintergardens in Blackpool on Sunday afternoon the 9th October. I'll be talking about the joys of writing Kids books (no wonder Enid Blyton was such a nark) and just about everything else

Here's a couple of photos from The Royal Variety Performance 2001(I think that was the date) I'm being presented to Her Majesty by our producer Jeff Thacker. Cilla, Barbara Windsor and myself had performed'You gotta have a Gimmick' from Gypsy. I remember her asking me where I practiced playing my bugle and if my neighbours objected, I told her I went down the field and whilst the neighbours didn't seem to mind a couple of sheep died of fright. I was sent this, it's my old Alma mater The Royal Vauxhall Tavern only there's an 88 bus in the way. No idea when this was taken but I can assure you I wasn't working there at the time. It was, and still is a truly wonderful pub with a diverse crowd (you'll probably bump into a BBC exec) and great acts. There's even scatter cushions dotted about it was body bags in my day. Long may the RVT reign as it played a major part in my life

Here's the other two, Flo and Sunny getting bigger every day. I just wish that it would rain as the grass is very sparse so I'm using up a lot of hay supplemented by their normal feed and endless carrots. The people in the farm shop must think I've got Bugs Bunny as a lodger

It looks like Venice doesn't it? Only it's not, it's Copenhagen and it hasn't half changed since I was last here. I used to work at Madame Arthur's and before you start it wasn't a brothel it was a very popular club. It's long gone now, the building has been turned into flats and the club is a bar/restaurant. Sad to see but that's progress for you. I could write a book about the carry on at Madame Arthur's... hang on, I did. Hope we've had some rain over there

paulogrady Down the docks In Copenhagen or at least they were 40 years ago when I was working here ( in a club, not down the docks) Now it's very ChiChi with little bars and restaurants and brightly painted buildings. Still, it looks lovely and the cafes are great

Well it had to happen in the end despite managing to avoid the dreaded COVID since we first went into lockdown. I’m in Malta supposed to be filming with a group of lovely people but all I’ve done for a week is lie in my hotel room with an unbelievable vicious headache and cough with sounds like a sick donkey . Thank heavens we took the precaution of pre recording my radio 2 show this Sunday incase I couldn’t get back due to flight cancellations etc . I’m feeling a lot better than I did but still feeling rough and permanently knackered
