Big shoutout to for bringing the show to Columbia this weekend. Thanks to all of the vendors who came out to support the inaugural expo. I know a lot of people, myself included, were really impressed with the quality of animals that everyone brought.

The best part was being able to introduce the kiddo to our hobby. Hopefully she takes after her old man. I could use me a live-in cage cleaner.

Some species of reptiles have brutal mating rituals, where copulation involves a lot of violent thrashing and biting. That’s not the case with retics. Maybe I’m anthropomorphizing (but I don’t think I am), but when they’re in the mood, they display behaviors that appear genuinely affectionate.

Sampson has been in with Calypso for over two weeks now. I separated them last week to see if they needed a break, but they both got so anxious that I had to put them together again. Sometime soon they’ll be curled up on opposite sides of the cage and Sampson will start eating again, but for now they’re content.

Most snakes can become accustomed to human interaction. Very few, however, will approach people out of curiosity. Very few. It takes an absolute lack of fear in the animal, a rare boldness that is the result of specific physical attributes and behavioral adaptations found in only a handful of snakes around the world. Mostly large diurnal colubrids and elapids.

In my personal opinion though, reticulated pythons display a level of awareness/intelligence only rivaled by drymarchon and O. hannah.

I’ll usually negotiate a small discount, but I always leave it up to the buyer to name a price. Sometimes they make a reasonable request. More often than not, you end up receiving a response like this.

I used to let it get to me. Now I just laugh and move on. Don’t chase money. Let the bad deals go, do business with good people and you’ll do well. Don’t listen to anyone who says you have to work with people you don’t like or respect. It’s not worth it. Life is too short.

A short rambling monologue about managing big snakes. Hope you find it helpful. The main point is that working with giant pythons is more akin to owning horses than a larger version of a ball python. You lead these animals, you don’t pick them up and move them around. If they know the drill and trust you, it’s not difficult to work with them.
