The Zaregueya: one of Yucatan´s most misunderstood animal. Due to its rat-like appearance unfortunately many of these creatures are killed by humans. However they are harmless and help keep a balance to the local environment. They eat many insects and snakes dangerous to humans. They can usually be found hanging in fruit trees having a snack, or scavenging through the local trash.
They were considered sacred to the Mayan people, and according to one of the Mayan Legends the Zaregueya helped steal fire from the Gods and bring it to the Mayan village to provide heat, light and a way to cook their food.
The Zaregueya is also known as the Tlacuache which in Nahuatl means : "The small eater of fire".
