Cavalcade Education’s annual Future Equine Practitioners Weekend is coming up September 7-8. Co-hosted by the independently-owned practices Millbrook Equine, Rhinebeck Equine , and the Equine Clinic at OakenCroft, this event offers unique hands-on learning experiences and networking opportunities for current equine veterinary students.

Each year we invite 40 students from various schools up-and-down the East Coast (even into Canada!) to participate. Veterinarians from all three of our independently owned practices volunteer their time to share their expertise and experience with students throughout the weekend. Students leave with new skills and more tools to navigate the early years of their careers.

You have likely read about the dwindling number of practicing horse doctors and the dramatic decrease in equine veterinary medicine graduates over the past few years. This event is part of a concerted effort to combat those grim numbers. We aim to inspire and enable the next generation of equine veterinary professionals, but we need your help.

Our practices put a lot of time and financial resources into this event. In the past, the Future Equine Practitioners Weekend has been made possible through industry sponsorships and collaborations. As you can imagine, those are harder and harder to come by.

💡Let's talk pre-foaling vaccines:

⭐️ Administering pre-foaling vaccines are an opportunity to set your foal up for success.

⭐️Foals rely on maternal antibodies provided through colostrum, so pre-foaling vaccines enable the colostrum to get loaded up with everything a foal might be exposed to. This is especially important for mares foaling late in the season.

💡Be sure to discuss your mare's pre-foaling vaccination regimen with your veterinarian! There are a variety of factors that come in to play depending on region and potential travel plans.

If you & your horse are making the move from ❄️ to ☀️🌴 for the winter months, make sure you've completed our handy checklist!

Work backwards from your ship date and double check that your coggins & vaccinations are all up to date to avoid any last-minute scrambles. And of course, get in touch with your veterinarian with plenty of time before you ship to set-up an appointment for a health certificate.

Some great tips to help your equine friends weather this storm from Rhinebeck Equine, one of our independently-owned founding practices!

📣 Attention all horse owners! We are getting lots of important questions about how best to handle the extreme weather conditions we are expecting this weekend. Here are a few tips from our veterinarians:

❄️ For horses that live outside: make sure there is adequate shelter from the elements and that water and feed can be provided in the shelter. Add at least a light blanket if horses will be in the elements at all or are geriatric or otherwise compromised to provide extra warmth.

💦 Water! Make sure all horse’s water buckets are appropriately filled and not iced over. We recommend offering a second bucket or water source with a little electrolytes or sweet feed grain added to encourage drinking. *We recommend starting this 24hr before extreme weather - tonight!

🍜 Food! Make sure horses have adequate nutrition to keep warm, and consider adding warm water and electrolytes to grain meals to encourage hydration during extreme weather conditions. (Note: some horses may drink slightly less if they have a large volume of water added to grain meals, this is fine.) *We recommend starting this 24hr before extreme weather - tonight! Forage (hay) is slowly digested and heat is produced through digestion so adding extra hay can help your horse stay warm.

🐎 Turnout/Exercise: It is important to keep horses moving to encourage gut motility however extreme icing conditions may prevent normal turnout. If this is the case and you have access to a barn aisle or indoor ring think about spending some time hand walking your horse for 15-30min to keep them moving.

☎️ As always we will have veterinarians on call after hours and during the holiday should you have any concerns about your horse’s health.
