Did you know most breeds of chickens are more cold tolerant than heat tolerant? ❄️ Chickens do surprisingly well in the cold weather with just a few adjustments made to their coop and routine!

🐓Keep the coop dry & draft free. Provide extra bedding & remove wet spots daily. Seal the coop up from any heavy drafts, but some air does need to exchange to prevent ammonia build up.

🐓Plan to feed and water your flock more often when it’s below freezing. Consider adding a heated waterer so they always have access to fresh, unfrozen water.

🐓Your flock will use more energy this time of year to keep warm and they will end up eating more food. A complete layer food like the Cluck & Co Layer Blend will provide all the energy they need.

🐓Since your flock will be spending more time in the coop, it’s a good idea to give them something to do. Adding Cluck & Co Scratch Grain Mix will give them something nutritious to peck. Things like corn & oatmeal are just fillers. If your chickens fill up on corn instead of their layer food, they can become deficient in essential nutrients, leading to health problems and decreased egg production.

🐓Chickens will lay less eggs during the shorter days of winter, especially in extremely cold temperatures. To keep egg production up you can provide 16 hours of artificial light per day, but it’s also ok to let your ladies take a break! 🥚 Make sure to collect those eggs before they freeze!
