The weather is getting better, which is a great news, but during those warmer months, ticks are most active. Those small spider - like creatures feed on blood of the animals and people and can transmit pathogens that can cause infections, including Lyme Disease. It is important to protect yourself and your pet from tick bites and remove ticks quickly and safely. Dogs are very susceptible to tick bites, so to protect your pet from tick bites it is good to avoid tall grass areas and piles of fallen leaves when on a walk, keep garden from overgrowing, use fence to keep unwelcomed animals, check pet’s fur regularly and apply anti – parasitic medicine prescribed from a veterinary clinic. They can be in form of shampoos, powders, sprays, spot on treatments, tablets, or collars.
It is best to start treatment before parasite season kicks off or use preventatives year - round.

Rubber chew toy for dogs turns out to be THE best (and the cheapest!) grooming tool for short haired dogs🙂🐕

Beagle on diet
We recently noticed that our beagle is a bit “bigger” than usually. He has changed his shape a bit, lost his “waist” and his ribs were difficult to feel. It may be to do with the fact that during the winter months, we did not walk him as much, or because we changed his food due to his allergies.
His new food seems to have slightly more fat than previous ones, but it works miracles with his digestive system and skin allergies, so we decided to stick with it.
We spoke to the vet, and it seems to be the right time to address the issue before it will become a bigger problem.
We started with a reduction of portion size (even invested in electronic cooking scale) and cut down on treats which we swapped to green beans. We stopped leaving food out, if our dog won’t eat his meal for first 15 mins, then we take it away. We also increased walking distances and time.
So far things are getting slowly, but it is just a start. Our dog enjoys extra walks, that’s for sure. 🐕🍖

Cats and dogs!
Cats and dogs are not natural soul mates, but with a bit of patience, they can become best friends. There are things to consider before you decide to introduce another pet to your family. It can be a lengthy but worthy procedure.
Before you decide to adopt cat or dog, think about the temperament and nature of the pet you already have and if possible try to find out how a new pet interacts with other animals. Another thing to consider is their age and energy level.
The first impression is the most important, you never get a second chance.
We had a 3-year-old beagle and decided to adopt a kitten. This is how we did it. For first few days we kept them in separate rooms. We did allow our beagle to come and sniff cat’s stuff when the cat was safe in our arms. And same with the kitten, we let him to explore the house when dog was out for a walk or in the garden. After few days we introduced them face-to-face, the dog was on the leash and cat was loose. We were lucky as there were no sign of aggression, just curiosity. We were constantly praising a dog for being a good boy.
We did this a few times per day for a few minutes and eventually we allowed dog to be off the leash in a closed room with our supervision. His instincts would kick in and he tried to run when kitten was on the move, but we would stop him and praise him when he listened.
Eventually they were just playing, but we still kept them in separated rooms when no one was around. After a month or two, we trusted them enough to spend time together unsupervised. They are best pals now, they sleep together, they drink from the same bowl and they play a lot together, It was very fun to watch their interactions.

Thinking about getting a beagle? Here are some things to consider. Btw, these are purely my observations, every dog is different.
1. Beagles are sociable and friendly. Sometimes… too sociable – they just need to say “hello” to EVERYONE and EVERY dog in the park.
2. Despite of their size, they are quite strong dog and can pull hard when they are on the leash So if you are not paying attention and they spot a squirrel, there is a big chance, they will pull you off your feet.
3. Beagles are good for family, even for kids and other pets, but they like to be in the center of attention.
4. They are not very loyal dogs; they would sell you for a biscuit. This may be actually a very positive thing, they go along well with everybody, which is handy when you are using a dog walker or doggy day care.
5. They aren’t very obedient, they do know some commands, but try to keep them off your nice cushions or not to lick your plate, when you leave the room for a minute.
6. They need plenty of walks and entertainment, or they get bored.
7. They are naturally scent driven. They follow their noses and are likely to completely ignore you when they get a hold of a scent, so they need to stay on leash all the time.
8. Due to their floppy ears obstructing fresh air from getting in, they have tendency to ear infections. They need to get their ears cleaned regularly.
9. But overall, they are just lovely and adorable dogs.
