Stole this from Jeremy Cook, but I couldn't have expressed it better myself.
Hey horse folks! Just wanted to que you into what some of these supplies are costing your farriers.
This is what $480 worth of supplies looks like ($477.84)
That’s 24 pairs of basic shoes, a box of rasps (5 per box) two boxes of nails, two silicone, one epoxy, and one package of mixing tips. 20 pair of the 24, are just sz ott. Most of this supply drop will typically only go 1-1.5 weeks, and there’s lots of other sizes that need to be regularly stocked.
Fuel is $4-$5 per gallon, and climbing, farrier insurance is on the rise, supplies continue to go up. Supply and demand is outrageous currently, with more horses coming into Utah, and more farriers moving out, than I’ve seen in my career. Some of the most well respected names in the farrier industry are currently injured, or retiring. So we’re all behind on our texts and phone calls.
Don’t mistake this post as a complaint or a rage post. I love my job, I’m grateful I get to do what I love, and I have some of the very best clientele in the damn state! (THANK YOU!!!) and I’m sure your guy/gal overwhelmingly feels the same!
This post is looking out for my fellow farriers (because some of them are too nice to say anything). I guess what I’m getting at is…
1. Prices are going to go up, and service ranges will probably decrease. If your farrier isn’t in the $150 range for shoes, they’re probably not making much money. If they’re not in that range, Give them a hug, a snack, and a tip, they’re probably trying to build a name, or they consider you family.
2. Be patient with your farrier. We’re ALL drowning in texts and calls, if we’re late, it’s probably because it’s been a rough day. Your horses aren’t the only ones on the schedule, we’re human, we get tired and wore out just like Eveveryone else, and farriers also deserve some down time for family and fun like everyone else too.
3. Farriers, be fair to yourselves. Go on your hunting trip, take that weekend off because you’re wore out, go to your kids game, and take time to be you. There’s more to life than making everyone else happy.
I’m fully expecting backlash on this post. But the good people will understand, and thank you for being who you are. Your farrier appreciates you more than you know. God bless y’all! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
