Kratos Boudicca (Boo) had her first Championship agility show last weekend and Brya Ingram Photography took these fab action shots. As you can see by the look on Boo's face she loves this new agility game. Now only to keep her in the ring - at the moment saying Hi to the spectators is all too enticing.🩷
Boo is co-owned with Heidi at Boromir Bull Terriers .

Why BAER (BAEP) testing is important.

Why BAER (BAEP) testing is important.

DEAF PUPPIES - There has been the odd comment around on some Bull Terrier NZ pages about a few puppies being diagnosed as deaf.
This is a good reminder to future puppy buyers to ask breeders if parents or pups have been BAEP tested before you buy them. Parent Dogs could be unilaterally deaf (one ear only) so that fact that the parents can hear is no guarantee that your puppy will be able to. See below for more information on BAEP Testing. Or if you would like to find out more about other health issues you should be checking for please message the club.

WHAT IS BAEP (BAER) TESTING ?
BAEP = Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential
We all know about our bullies occasional ‘selective deafness’ :) but a BAEP test can measure how well our dogs can actually hear.
There are different types of deafness that can affect dogs :
Unilateral deafness = hearing loss in one ear.
Bilateral deafness = hearing loss in both ears
Age related deafness = progressive hearing loss related to age.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE TEST :
The dog is usually sedated and three small acupuncture needles are placed under the skin. One in front of the ear being tested , one on top of the head and one centrally on the forehead.
A headphone is placed over the ear being tested that produces a sound wave in a pattern of ‘clicks’. Sound waves enter the external ear which travel into the inner ear canal and down to the eardrum which then begins to vibrate. These vibrations move into the middle ear causing the tiny bones (auditory ossicles) to vibrate. The vibration waves move to the cochlea in the inner ear. Hair cells within the cochlea begin to move or ‘wave’ due to the change in pressure.
The cochlea is connected to the auditory nerve which then triggers an impulse that is registered by the brain. This then generates a computer graph measuring brain wave response to the sound and the hearing can then be assessed.
In a dog with ‘normal’ hearing the graph will show a number of peaks and troughs on the graph. A completely deaf dog will show a flatline.

WHY TEST ? - Bull Terriers are among the many breeds who can have congenital deafness, this is common in many white animals. It is not recommended to breed from animals who are bilaterally or unilaterally deaf as this can be passed down to their offspring.
