Dog Training, Socializing, Playdates & Boarding Hi! I’m Jen! I just naturally come this way. Many, many, many moons ago.

Overly enthusiastic most of the time…People often wonder how I have so much energy. “She must drink so much coffee!” Nope! I am formerly from Irvine, California, but have lived in Austin, TX since I was 13 years old…. I am a full-time dog trainer who is obsessed with photography. My passion is to help dogs and their owners find ways of effectively managing communication with each other and finding
their optimal happiness through a balanced system of exercise, obedience, and socialization. I want training to be a positive and fun experience for you and your dog. I am a big believer that happiness leads to motivation and a motivated dog wants to make the right choices and engage with you even more. There are a few options for my training services – private training (with or without you) and pack training. The pack training sessions typically have 3-4 dogs. I strategically team up the dogs based on what I want them to learn from each other that day. This calculated matchmaking provides extra motivation, friendship, and moral support for all the dogs in the training program and has been proven to be incredibly effective time after time. It will be up to me and your dog when your dog is ready to be in the pack environment. It is never something to rush, but it is a huge advantage for certain aspects of training. The playdates are intended to be a training opportunity and experience, as well as a huge energy release for active or social dogs. There are countless benefits to these sessions. All dogs will be vetted for a few pack training sessions before being invited to playdates. The playdates are small and supervised very closely. These are not intended for dog-reactive dogs. I love to help build the lines of communication between dogs and their families. I do everything I can to make sure each training session is a rewarding one, focused on fulfillment-based training, which will ultimately give you a more well-balanced dog. My techniques emphasize redirection, rewards for good choices, prevention, and anticipation. For more information, please visit www.thebuttercupbunch.com......Thank you for visiting my page! =D

Introducing Recall – A Simple Game to Play With Your Dog (with Lulu) – Part 1 When teaching your dog new concepts, it is best to simplify and deconstruct the task into easy concepts. Work through them with your dog, one at a time, indoors, if possible, before moving outdoors. Lulu loved this game and caught on very quickly because I was letting her sniff, watch, find, check in, repeat. We have already practiced sniff, watch, check in and repeat, so the only added concept here was FIND. This is a very simple activity that helps your dog start prioritizing your management and their attentiveness to you vs their impulsive instincts. #thebuttercupbunch #dogshelpingdogs #dogtraining #austindogtrainer The Buttercup Bunch - Dog Training, Playdates, Play Training, Boarding & Photography Website: www.thebuttercupbunch.com E-Mail: [email protected] Instagram & Threads: @the_buttercup_bunch Facebook: The Buttercup Bunch YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPW-DjFrfg5MBkvv2LsAa7A As always, thank you for your reviews & referrals! This video includes two different observations about the pack walk dynamic between the dogs in these two sessions. First pack - Kimchi and Rocky are the huskies and life siblings (not litter). Cooper is the lab Pyrenees mix on my right side. They have all been around each other a ton. Lulu is the newest of the crew and has been doing leash training and all the things involved with desensitizing and socializing. She had never met Kimchi til this day. Lulu is very confident and keeps trying to walk on the outside of Rocky. Well, that is not how it works. Rocky is the pack leader (besides me) and he repeatedly adjusts his position in the pack to be on the outer edge. This is how he shows her how this works. It is not her place to be on the outside making the decisions for the pack. Second pack – Kimchi & Rocky with Buster and Bo. Buster is overly alert and mildly dog reactive, but with some time, she accepts dogs into her life and can walk peacefully with them. Bo is our sensitive girl. She takes things at her own pace, but her curiosity is our golden nugget, and we use every opportunity possible to engage her curiosity so she can overcome her fears, one by one, little by little. Bo does NOT ever attempt to be on the outside of the pack. Why? Because she does not want or expect that responsibility. Her position in the pack allows her to have that extra comfort when we approach a situation that triggers her fears. I can always tell when she is feeling a little confident – she steps away from the pack and gives herself some space. She rejoins the pack whenever a trigger approaches or appears. #thebuttercupbunch #dogshelpingdogs #dogtraining #austindogtrainer The Buttercup Bunch - Dog Training, Playdates, Play Training, Boarding & Photography Website: www.thebuttercupbunch.com E-Mail: [email protected] Instagram & Threads: @the_buttercup_bunch Facebook: The Buttercup Bunch YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPW-DjFrfg5MBkvv2LsAa7A
When you are managing a reactive dog, anticipation and management are critical to your success. Of course, nothing is ever completely predictable, but typically dogs send us many messages before they are going to react. In this case, I anticipated that she was going to react for the simple reason that there is a German Shepherd on the other side of the one fence that we walk by quite often and she almost always barks at us. I usually try to let the dogs get to the point where they are invited to make a choice. I waited to redirect her until that exact moment when she was so close to the fence, and I was about the same distance away. Why did she choose me? Because for months and months, we have worked on the value of obedience and positive reinforcement. She got the treat when she chose me. She got compliments and positive praise when she chose me. Buster is a sucker for a good compliment. 😉 I train them to make good choices. If we tell them EVERYTHING they are supposed to do or not do, they have trouble being independent and we are constantly having to tell them everything to be functioning dogs. No thanks. Teach your dog to make good choices. (Keep in mind, with puppies or dogs that have never had boundaries, etc… You will need to be the instruction police and it will be a nonstop thing until they clearly understand their boundaries, your expectations of them and what the rules of life in your house are….all the things.) #thebuttercupbunch #dogshelpingdogs #dogtraining #austindogtrainer The Buttercup Bunch - Dog Training, Playdates, Play Training, Boarding & Photography Website: www.thebuttercupbunch.com E-Mail: [email protected] Instagram & Threads: @the_buttercup_bunch Facebook: The Buttercup Bunch YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPW-DjFrfg5MBkvv2LsAa7A

Considering the native dog personality that lives inside of everything that is Buttercup, she keeps it under control and makes good choices. However, say SQUIRREL and the prey drive kicks into high gear and the hunter comes out. Give your dog a purpose and ways to feel a sense of accomplishment! It helps their confidence. =) #thebuttercupbunch #dogshelpingdogs #dogtraining #austindogtrainer The Buttercup Bunch - Dog Training, Playdates, Play Training, Boarding & Photography Website: www.thebuttercupbunch.com E-Mail: [email protected] Instagram & Threads: @the_buttercup_bunch Facebook: The Buttercup Bunch YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPW-DjFrfg5MBkvv2LsAa7A As always, thank you for your reviews & referrals! WAIT FOR IT!! We all could learn this lesson from my grandmother…. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! She knew that boundaries were SO important to set and I hope that you do, too! ;) However, remember to set your dogs up for success and do not enable or encourage them to make a mistake to then get frustrated when they push that boundary. A little back story about my wonderful, witty, adorable grandmother. She absolutely loved dogs, birds and singing. She was ALWAYS singing around the house. She had a dog named Spock when we were kids and he was a fun little Jack Russell Terrier who perfectly complimented her fun spirit. This dog in this video is Beckett, who lived with her at the end of her life. He was a really good listener for her and loved to sing with her, as you can see. She had dementia, but you can see her fun spirit lived on no matter where her brain took her in life. I can't tell you how many times I have watched this video. I miss her so much and hope she is enjoying all of the sunshine and walks along her beautiful Redondo Beach with Grandpa that her heart desires. I will be visiting their gravesite this June and can't wait to see them. #thebuttercupbunch #dogshelpingdogs #dogtraining #austindogtrainer The Buttercup Bunch - Dog Training, Playdates, Play Training, Boarding & Photography Website: www.thebuttercupbunch.com E-Mail: [email protected] Instagram & Threads: @the_buttercup_bunch Facebook: The Buttercup Bunch YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPW-DjFrfg5MBkvv2LsAa7A As always, thank you for your reviews & referrals! Does Your Dog Trust Stairs with Gaps? Do not carry your dog up and down the stairs. Most puppies need to be taught to walk up and down stairs, especially stairs with gaps under them. They think they are going to be sucked into a black hole! The solution is NOT to just give in and start carrying them up and down. Are you going to do that when they are 60#? No. Help them work through it and let them walk! I have found that it is much easier to teach them to feel comfortable taking those steps by a little show and tell. You can do it …but it is much easier to just bring along a dog that has no problems walking up and down the stairs and letting them watch a few times. They will likely be curious and take those first few steps. If you are on the 3rd floor like me, you will probably notice they make it up that first flight okay, but then go into a little overdrive mode when they realize they must keep climbing. Be patient. Be calm. Luring them with a treat trail works about half of the time. It did not work in the case of Winnie. Practice SMALL just like with everything else. Don’t expect them to want to climb to the 3rd floor on the first try. Do not drag them. Encourage them. Give them time. DO NOT CODDLE THEM during this. There is NO touching of the dog that needs to happen to accomplish this task until the very end when they have completed the exercise. TAKE THE SMALL VICTORIES and praise your dog as much as possible when they take those brave first steps! When they finally make it to the top on their own, it is PARTY TIME for your dog! Celebrate with them! Be proud of them and yourselves. For the record…. Winnie had no problems with stairs after this first day. Did we get it on the first try? Absolutely not. I took her out every 30 minutes for a potty break on a 2.5 hour playdate and we tried it over and over each time we went outside. Did she successfully get up and down by the end of those exercises? She did! *SIDE NOTE: This was a few month

Why should you walk your dog? If you do not walk your dog, you must have a reason…What is it? I am always all ears…. Not all dogs HAVE to get walked, but the benefits of a good dog walk are endless…. Leash training is one of the most common things that I work on with clients. It is incredibly impactful for humans and dogs together when a dog can successfully be walked in public. However, if you are struggling to walk your dog because your dog pulls, lunges, is reactive, crazy…That is all normal.... I have heard and seen it all…It IS fixable. I LOVE LOVE LOVE to leash train dogs because it usually means the dogs will get more exercise = HAPPIER, more fulfilled dog = happier humans! I love pack training dogs to walk because it makes the dogs happy. They understand it. It clicks. It is easier for everyone and speeds the process along. Set yourselves up for success. Common Struggles with Walking a Dog Include: -Criss cross walking or just all over the place. -Pulling. -Not walking. -Easily distracted and can never focus on one thing for more than 1/10 of a second. -“Bothered” by anything you do to try to get them to walk normally. -Wanting to stop and meet every dog. -Wanting to stop and meet every person. -Wanting to run away from every person. -Triggered by anything moving, loud or with metal. -Reactive towards (you name it). When using a harness, such as a gentle leader (like in the video), take baby steps. The first step is just getting them to walk. Do not be fussy about HOW they walk. The exception to this is if they are pulling you because I would never recommend allowing that. You want them to associate the gentle leader with a walk and a walk with fun and adventures and learning and all the things! When they are used to it and understand all of that, you will notice a shift in their enthusiasm, and they will be happy to put on the gentle leader because they know they are about to go have fun! Notice the baby steps. They are the bu

Buttercup has a few rules about everything and it is best for everyone if these rules are always followed … One of them is that things do not touch her fur. If you are lucky enough to be invited to pet her, best to make sure you really truly understand what a gift that is from her. ;) Anyways…. That is why she is sitting several inches away from them and smiling. Had she been one inch closer to them, that face would be the look of disgust directed towards me for thinking it was acceptable to do that to her. =D *The more you know.* #thebuttercupbunch #dogshelpingdogs #dogtraining #austindogtrainer The Buttercup Bunch - Dog Training, Playdates, Play Training, Boarding & Photography Website: www.thebuttercupbunch.com E-Mail: [email protected] Instagram & Threads: @the_buttercup_bunch Facebook: The Buttercup Bunch YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPW-DjFrfg5MBkvv2LsAa7A
How often do you correct your dog? Do you feel bad about it? Watch how persistent Buttercup is with her corrections. Is Simon going to pout about it? Absolutely not. He is learning about rules and boundaries. This will help him to become a more well-balanced, confident, obedient dog. How do dogs learn from each other? How are you teaching your dog? Consistency is KEY. Tone is KEY. Transparency is KEY. Here are a few tips when introducing new dogs: 1) Monitor all new introductions closely. I like using a small space so that I can give them freedom and space, but also intervene if needed while they are working together. Using a leash on either dog is completely okay while making it easier to control. 2) Do not let the dogs guard you or a space. This will lead to problems. 3) Make compromises. See how you can get them to engage in play somehow, if one dog has too much energy for the others to be ready to engage. In this case, I used tug-o-war to wear Simon down a bit more. When his energy settles, the other dogs will engage in play with him. 4) Give them opportunities for breaks, especially for the dog doing the correcting. 5) Do not get discouraged if free play does not happen the first time or two, or even more… Give them a chance to feel comfortable and figure out how they are going to incorporate themselves with the other dogs. How do you make choices when selecting friends? How do you decide who to be most vulnerable and free with? They are making choices, as well. #thebuttercupbunch #dogshelpingdogs #dogtraining #austindogtrainer The Buttercup Bunch - Dog Training, Playdates, Play Training, Boarding & Photography Website: www.thebuttercupbunch.com E-Mail: [email protected] Instagram & Threads: @the_buttercup_bunch Facebook: The Buttercup Bunch YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPW-DjFrfg5MBkvv2LsAa7A As always, thank you for your reviews & referrals! Everyone wants to have a dog that is easy to walk. It is not that difficult when you consider all of the tools and techniques available. My favorite tool is the gentle leader. I put it on pretty much every dog that I train for many, many reasons, including, it gives you much more control over their reactions. Without control, you cannot control your dog, which leads to all types of issues. That is a PRIORITY. I post a lot of videos about focusing and patience because that is a key factor in having a successful dog walk. Winnie is in the early phases of leash training, but a few observations are very typical, including walking back and forth, all over the place, every scent means a desire to investigate, excitement for everything, eagerness for everything, all at once. There is a time and place for this and if they do not get this out of their system, they will be bored, and I would prefer that they are eagerly engaged in my training sessions and have fun along the way. There are plenty of opportunities to be focused and serious. 😉 My goals for her are currently to get her to walk normally with the gentle leader on, then transition to a more solid walking form where she is not crossing back and forth and going all over the place. First things first. The #1 reason I take this approach is because my goal is to make it easier for the owners to walk their dog. More walks = more exercise = more inclusion = more fulfilled. If it is annoying to walk your dog, you are likely to not include them or walk them as often as they need to be walked. Here are a few general tips of things to focus on when you are walking your dog: 1) Use Verbal markers (good girl, good job, good boy, yes) to reinforce desired behaviors and actions. 2) Use Negative markers (ah ah, no, leave it) to reinforce undesired behaviors. Do not overuse. 3) Timing, consistency, and transparency are key with corrections and redirection. 4) Magnet feeding exercises. 5) You must be in control with ca
