My Grandmother always cooked tasty food. But one morning, she put burnt toast in front of my Grandfather.
Not just a little burnt, but black as coal.
I waited to see what my Grandpa would say.
But he just ate the toast, sipped away at his coffee and asked about my schoolwork.
Then I heard my Grandmother apologize to him for his meal.
I'll never forget his response.
"Dear, I love burnt toast."
Later, I asked him if he had told the truth.
He put his arm on my shoulder and said,
"Your Grandmother is very tired and she worked very hard to provide this meal for us." One negative word can completely cut someone down

The Norwegian Terrier Club held a general meeting and the following proposal (submitted by Silje Vo, Marianne Homlong, Ingeborg Havsø, Malin Paulsen, Isabell Danielsen, Thea Aaseth, Katrine Haraldsen, Camilla Berger and Sandra Holme) were unanimously adopted:

«No combinations should be made where two dogs are mated with color dilution (blue or fawn). Offspring of such combinations are automatically barred from breeding. Additional consequences for breeders who make such combinations are decided by NKK in collaboration with NTK ».

The reason for the proposal is the byb market that many breeders of blue dogs are behind. We are concerned about the animal welfare of the breeding animals in addition to the uncritical selection of breeding animals as long as they produce offspring with the color blue.
In addition, the disease CDA only affects dogs with dilute color gene and we believe there are large dark numbers around this disease that are often diagnosed as allergies without further investigation confirming CDA (by biopsy).
By excluding breeding of dogs with the dilute color gene, we will both reduce this unwanted market while reducing the risk of CDA.

The board of the Breed Group for SBT sees the decision as a victory for the breed's future in Norway and is waiting for the decision to be processed by NKK.

THE REASONS BEHIND EYE SCREENING:

There are many types of hereditary eye disease, both congenital (conditions that exist from birth or soon after birth) and non-congenital (conditions that develop later in life), that affect dogs. Many of these conditions can have serious effects on health and welfare, causing pain, blindness, or the need for lifelong medication, and should be taken into consideration when breeding dogs.
Two of the types of cataract that are screened for in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier are PHPV and PPSC, details of which are given below. As well as these cataracts there are other eye abnormalities such as distichiasis which can also occur and may only be picked up through eye screening.
PHPV (Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitreous):
With this condition the eye of the unborn puppy does not develop normally, blood vessels which help develop the lens of the eye are not re-absorbed as they should be and results in deposits on the lens which can result in mild vision impairment to severe (blindness) depending on the grade or severity of the condition. Outside the UK it is graded 1 - 6 with 6 being the most severely affected. In the UK it is either 'unaffected' or 'affected'.
Although it can be operated on it is a serious operation and can be both traumatic and very expensive. At this moment in time there is no test available and the mode of inheritance unknown, but being congenital (existing at birth) means it is detectable from 6 weeks of age by eye screening. It is not progressive so will not worsen.
Reputable breeders will litter screen their puppies prior to placing in homes so their status is known.
PPSC (Posterior Polar Subcapsular Cataract):
This type of cataract presents as an area of degenerative and malformed lens fibres that form an opacity in the central posterior subcapsular area of the lens. The mode of inheritance is unknown and it can present at any age of the dogs life. It is for this reason at this present time it is recommended to screen annually for the condition any breeding stock.

Let’s talk about teeth.
Much more then cosmetic appearance, the jaw and teeth add to the shape and facial expression of the animal.
The Standard states :
Upper and lower jaw strong and broad. Strong, complete dentition (42 teeth) with scissor bite, the upper incisors closely overlapping the lower incisors.

Form follows function. The old timers knew this. Properly aligned teeth gave a working dog the tools he needed for his job. A properly formed bite and correctly aligned teeth - upper and lower incisors.

I have attached a few photos of different dogs. If you would like to comment and open discussion then you are more than welcome

Judy, a purebred pointer, was the mascot of several ships in the Pacific, and was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and taken to a prison camp. There she met Aircraftsman Frank Williams, who shared his small portion of rice with her.

Judy raised morale in the POW camp, and also barked when poisonous snakes, crocodiles or even tigers approached the prisoners. When the prisoners were shipped back to Singapore, she was smuggled out in a rice sack, never whimpering or betraying her presence to the guards.

The next day, that ship was torpedoed. Williams pushed Judy out of a porthole in an attempt to save her life, even though there was a 15-foot drop to the sea. He made his own escape from the ship, but was then recaptured and sent to a new POW camp.

He didn't know if Judy had survived, but soon he began hearing stories about a dog helping drowning men reach pieces of debris after the shipwreck. And when Williams arrived at the new camp, he said: "I couldn’t believe my eyes! As I walked through the gate, a scraggly dog hit me square between the shoulders and knocked me over. I’d never been so glad to see the old girl!"

They spent a year together at that camp in Sumatra. "Judy saved my life in so many ways," said Williams. "But the greatest of all was giving me a reason to live. All I had to do was look into those weary, bloodshot eyes and ask myself: 'What would happen to her if I died?' I had to keep going."

Once hostilities ceased, Judy was then smuggled aboard a troopship heading back to Liverpool. In England, she was awarded the Dickin Medal (the "Victoria Cross" for animals) in May 1946. Her citation reads: "For magnificent courage and endurance in Japanese prison camps, which helped to maintain morale among her fellow prisoners, and also for saving many lives through her intelligence and watchfulness".

At the same time, Frank Williams was awarded the PDSA's White Cross of St. Giles for his devotion to Judy. Frank and Judy spent a year after the war visiting the relatives of English POWs who had not survived, and Frank said that Judy "always provided a comforting presence to the families."

When Judy finally died at the age of 13, Frank spent two months building a granite and marble memorial in her memory, which included a plaque describing her life story.

Official Standard of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier

General Appearance: The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a smooth-coated dog. It should be of great strength for its size and, although muscular, should be active and agile.
Size, Proportion, Substance: Height at shoulder - 14 to 16 inches. Weight - Dogs, 28 to 38 pounds; bi***es, 24 to 34 pounds, these heights being related to weights. Non-conformity with these limits is a fault. In proportion, the length of back, from withers to tail set, is equal to the distance from withers to ground.
Head: Short, deep through, broad skull, very pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop, short foreface, black nose. Pink (Dudley) nose to be considered a serious fault. Eyes - Dark preferable, but may bear some relation to coat color. Round, of medium size, and set to look straight ahead. Light eyes or pink eye rims to be considered a fault, except that where the coat surrounding the eye is white the eye rim may be pink. Ears - Rose or half-pricked and not large. Full drop or full prick to be considered a serious fault. Mouth - A bite in which the outer side of the lower incisors touches the inner side of the upper incisors. The lips should be tight and clean. The badly undershot or overshot bite is a serious fault.

Neck, Topline, Body: The neck is muscular, rather short, clean in outline and gradually widening toward the shoulders. The body is close coupled, with a level topline, wide front, deep brisket and well sprung ribs being rather light in the loins. The tail is undocked, of medium length, low set, tapering to a point and carried rather low. It should not curl much and may be likened to an old-fashioned pump handle. A tail that is too long or badly curled is a fault.
Forequarters: Legs straight and well b***d, set rather far apart, without looseness at the shoulders and showing no weakness at the pasterns, from which point the feet turn out a little. Dewclaws on the forelegs may be removed. The feet should be well padded, strong and of medium size.

Hindquarters: The hindquarters should be well muscled, hocks let down with stifles well bent. Legs should be parallel when viewed from behind. Dewclaws, if any, on the hind legs are generally removed. Feet as in front.

Coat: Smooth, short and close to the skin, not to be trimmed or de-whiskered.

Color: Red, fawn, white, black or blue, or any of these colors with white. Any shade of brindle or any shade of brindle with white. Black-and-tan or liver color to be disqualified.

Gait: Free, powerful and agile with economy of effort. Legs moving parallel when viewed from front or rear. Discernible drive from hind legs.

Temperament: From the past history of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the modern dog draws its character of indomitable courage, high intelligence, and tenacity. This, coupled with its affection for its friends, and children in particular, its off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability, makes it a foremost all-purpose dog.

Disqualification: Black-and-tan or liver color.
