Our spring field trial season is almost at an end. This year, we didn't attend as many trials as we would have liked, but enjoyed those events - both the familiar and the new - that we did attend. Jordan traveled with Gypsy and Dos to Ellendale ND to compete in a National Shoot to Retrieve Association (NSTRA) field trial as a member of the Mid-North Region. Gypsy is no stranger to NSTRA trials and did well, earning a second place finish on Day 1 of the event. Dos is new to the game, and while he didn't place this go-around, he showed real promise and has the makings to be a real competitor with a little more training and practice. Closer to home, Jordan entered Ryder and Lily in their first Minnesota Grouse Dog Association field trials in Mora, MN. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and performed exceedingly well for first-timers. Ryder took a first place in the Open Shooting Trial (pictured below), and Lily took a first place in the Open Derby Trial. Ryder's performance earned him a chance to compete in the fall field trial series this September/October. Another "first," Jordan handled four dogs (not owned by Ruffed Country Kennels) in an American Kennel Club (AKC) licensed hunt test in Little Falls, MN. He earned a Master qualifying score for three of the four dogs, qualifying twice with one dog. Field trials are a fun way for any bird dog owner to hone his or her dog's pointing, retrieving, and obedience skills, and they're something we look forward to each year. They provide an opportunity to interact with other bird dog enthusiasts and enjoy some friendly competition during the hunting off season. While we wait for the fall trial and hunting seasons, the training continues!
