Every day is a dog day for us, but today is extra special as we celebrate International Dog Day. This day is observed as a special occasion to celebrate the love, loyalty and companionship that dogs bring to our lives. It is celebrated every year on August 26 in several countries. So hug your dog more than your normally do and spoil him/her as much as you can. After all, they deserve it.

Pet received dog assessment; Pet was muzzled due to previous playgroup notes; Pet seemed very agitated throughout the entire session, stressed and possibly overstimulated by her environment; Pet allowed for the helper dogs to greet but was very fixated on removing her muzzle; Pet does not seem to have an intention to harm dogs but does appear to be suffering and the quality of her life seems to be diminishing rapidly

Pet is also severely overstimulated in the kennel and continues to stereotypically push the kennel door on a continues manner.

Happy 4th of July! But please protect your pets. Did you know that more dogs and cats get lost or escape on a day like today? They escape from backyards or where they live because of fear of fireworks. Please be a responsible pet owner and protect your pet by securing their environment. If you are leaving the house leave the tv on or play soft music for them.

My name is Mako and an MPR Board Member found me this weekend. I got lucky and found a foster home! However, I'm just a little guy and need vaccines and neutered before I can be adopted. I could use help paying my veterinary bills as I'm too young to work. When I am big and strong, I'm going to pay it forward and help all the dogs that haven't been as lucky as I have been. Thank you to Megan. MPR, and my new foster family for giving me a second chance!

Today we honor all who have served and died for our country to protect the freedom that we continue to have. We also honor the many dogs that lost their lives to protect our soldiers. They too deserve to be recognized on a day like today.

What an incredible night at our annual Women for Paws Puppy Love Affair at the R House in Wynwood. It was a magical evening with so many pet owners bringing their dogs for a fun evening. We were thrilled about the surprise visit from City of Miami Commission Chairwoman Christine King. Also, the director at Miami-Dade Animal Services, Annette Jose, joined us. And to our surprise, the global Ms. Florida, who dressed to match her beautiful Pomeranian, attended as well. Our featured artist, George Rodez, greeted our guests with beautiful art pieces reflecting his love for animals. Thank you to our board of directors who helped to ensure a successful event. Founder of Women for Paws, Grace C. Lopez warns pet owners on dogs contracting the Leptospirosis bacteria from raccoons. Leptospirosis is a bacteria that is found in the urine of raccoons, and it can be life-threatening to dogs and humans. Although this bacteria is rare in South Florida, based on information provided by a local vet, there have been several cases reported in the last two months in the area of Midtown and Design District. There is a vaccine for this disease, but it may not prevent dogs from getting the bacteria. The worst part is that this bacteria affects the liver and kidneys and may have long-term effects. Grace shares why she is doing everything possible to warn pet owners about this. "My life changed two weeks ago when one of my dogs got very sick and had severe diarrhea. I never thought for a moment that my dog’s illness was life-threatening and much less that he would be diagnosed with Leptospirosis. This is an infection that can affect healthy, vaccinated dogs that may show no symptoms. This was the case with my second dog, which the vet requested get tested too. Unfortunately, the news was not what I was hoping for, as they both were diagnosed with Leptospirosis. My friends call me a helicopter paw mom because I hardly walk my dogs and I look after them too much. But this was something that even a pet owner as connected with their pets as I am could have never imagined. I was devastated to learn about a disease that could claim the life of my dogs no matter how healthy or vaccinated they are. I am now warning pet owners that regardless of vaccination, dogs can contract this bacteria."

Please adopt if you are sure that you can keep the dog. It’s not fair to the dog to have to go back and forth. They don’t get it and the only thing these dogs understand is that once again they are being abandoned.
