We’re proud of our long history as a family business which has been producing excellence in animal nutrition since 1908.
It all began when Michael Connolly returned home from the United States in the early 1900s, and brought back with him a wealth of knowledge and expertise in animal care which he had learned from his experiences working overseas.
Looking to turn his passion for animal nutrition into a business, Michael bought a Mill on the River Barrow in the scenic farmlands of Country Kilkenny, and began developing exceptional, wholesome feeds for farm animals, using ingredients which he sourced locally from nearby farmers.
As animals began to thrive on these products, so the business grew and grew, and when Michael’s son William took over the reins, it was decided to paint the roof of the Mill red, to stand out from other buildings in the area – and so began the RED MILLS legacy, giving the business an enduring symbol of the nutritious animal foods it produces.
Dogs have always been treasured members of the Connolly family, so it was only natural for Red Mills to expand into producing superior dog foods. In the 1980s, Bill Connolly was inspired by his devotion to his companions - Caesar the German Pointer and Pharaoh the Springer Spaniel, to develop a healthy dog food recipe, made with fresh local ingredients, carefully balanced and tailored to meet the needs of each of these breeds.
Caesar and Pharaoh thrived on their wholesome new food, growing glossy coats and bringing home rosettes from many dog shows. Other dog lovers were quick to want the same for their four legged friends, and the Connolly family have stepped up to provide it. Over the years, we’ve expanded our range to make sure every dog can benefit from a diet suited to their age, breed type, size and lifestyle.
