It's been almost a year but we are finally in our new home! I'm not only excited for my family but for the plans I have for Kmar. I've had so much going on lately that Kmar has been placed on the back burner for awhile. That being said I want to talk a little about my ideas for those who may not already know. Be ready for a long post.
I've always had a love for animals, love for kids, and as I got older I grew a love for my community. I'm basically one of those people who believe if you give kindness you're going to get it back and the world will be a better place. As a teen I wanted to pursue something pertaining to animals, ultimately having my own animal rescue. Back and forth over cats and dogs or wildlife. Then there came a time where I wanted to be able to offer some type of program for the kids and teens in our community. Something that gave kids something to do in between sports or for those that do not play.
Over the last 2 years I've paid more attention to what happens within our community. I've learned that the stray and feral cat population is on the rise with only a few people doing anything about it. (Thank you to the awesome souls who are taking money out of your own pocket to TNR when you can.) This just felt like a sign to me. That this was my time to persue something that will benefit my community and it is something I enjoy. Animals. As of now my main focus is cats but who knows where I'll be 20 years from now.
I have a rough draft to my action plan. (Rough draft because I never stick to my original plans.)
1. Fundraisers Fundraisers Fundraiser
Last year I set up at the MU Community Market accepting donations. We did some tye-dying at the Hartman Festival. KMAR was able to raise several hundred in one summer. This year I'll be setting up again at the MU Community Market in a couple weeks. My kiddos and I are working on "little girl items" to sell and donate a percent to Kmar. I also plan to be at Harrman Festival again. This summer is a busy one but hoping to have more fundraiser ideas in place by fall.
2. Once I hit a certain undecided amount I'd like to get a TNR program started. So say it is $70 per cat that's 14 cats for every $1000 raised. Sadly money coming in is alot slower than the kitties coming out. At this point I'm still undecided of what my goal amount should be before I start to offer the program. What's your opinion?
3. Open a sanctuary to take in mommas and her kitten's in hopes we can re-home the kits before they become feral. In a notebook still back away I did the estimated math of what one cat would cost a year. Off my head I believe that number was $200-500. That was neutered, vaccines, food, and litter. I'll update when I find the notebook.
4. Open a full sanctuary to all cats and be a back up for the local human society. This will require a huge amount of funds and my 501c3 non-profit license which are cost to $3000.
The sanctuary's are my ultimate goal but my fund amount for those are going to be set extremely high. Going at this alone I can't risk putting my family at financial risk.
As for the kiddos I'd love to get them involved. To be apart of fundraisers, helping at events, and maybe someday caring for the animals we can take in. I want to be able to teach them responsibility, how to be apart of their community, and how they can make a difference.
