At Hoosier Donkey Rescue, we don't just save the long ears! On July 4th, while taking the trash to the road at 11:00 PM, we were surprised by these two small kittens. They ran out from the tall grass, crying for help. After checking with our few neighbors, we confirmed they were dumped on our rural road. Despite checking many times over the next two days for more kittens, we only spotted two large hawks, making us fear the worse if there were others.

These lucky two are both boys, very friendly, smart and healthy. We are now looking for great homes for them. If you're interested in giving one or both of these kittens a loving home, please reach out to us! 🐾 🐈 ❤️

We are excited to share that we completed a much-needed project at our facility grounds! Today, we removed the forms for the concrete base we poured on Monday in the manure pits. This will allow us to store manure safely before moving it to a field in windrows, where it will transform into beatiful, rich compost.

This project is a significant step forward in our mission to maintain a clean and sustainable environment for our beloved rescues, wildlife and environment. Thank you to everyone who has purchased freeze dried candy from The Candy Crunch, Freeze Dried Treats. The donations made this possible. Now to fill the hay barn for winter 2024.

Donkey picture for attention only, aren't these boys adorable. Pictured is Miles and Ollie.

World Donkey Day is celebrated on May 8th each year. It's a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of donkeys and the challenges they face. Donkeys are integral to the livelihoods of many people around the world, especially in rural areas where they are used for transportation and agriculture. Despite their contributions in the world, donkeys often face neglect and mistreatment.

The day emphasizes the need for better care, management, and understanding of donkeys. It also seeks to highlight the valuable roles donkeys play in communities and ecosystems.

Supporting organizations that work on donkey welfare, learning about sustainable practices involving donkeys, and spreading the word about their importance are all great ways to participate in this observance.

Here at Hoosier Donkey Rescue, we love these creatures and illustrating exactly how amazing and deserving donkeys really are ❤️

🫏 *Rescue Update: Welcome Our 3 New Donkeys!*🫏

Exciting news! We've just welcomed three adorable donkeys from an Indiana auction. Meet our new friends (names may be changed in the near future):

1. **Miles** - A charming 3-year-old mini jack, who has a friendly demeanor and playful spirit. Soon, he'll be seeing the vet to get gelded and receive a general health check. He needs to loose a few pounds and we will be working on that slowly.

2. **Honey and Ollie** - A sweet mother-son duo who spent too much time on rich pasture. Charm, the mom, is very sweet but certainly overweight and in need of farrier care. Lucky, at just 7-8 months old, is quite thin and missing his mane hair. Both had several ticks and matts removed.

🔨 Today's visit from our farrier was a success, especially for Lucky and Charm, providing the much-needed hoof care. We are thankful to have a skilled farrier who is willing to come out unscheduled on a Sunday to provide the care these 3 needed.

🚑 All three donkeys are currently in a 30-day quarantine period to ensure they are healthy before they join the rest of the donkey crew.

🌾 We will be working with the vets to tailor a diet plan for Charm to help her lose weight safely, and another to help Lucky gain weight and thrive.

📸 Scroll through to see the heart-touching photos from the auction and the transformation post-farrier's care.

As always, we are incredibly grateful for your support, which enables us to save lives and nurture these beautiful creatures back to health. Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for being a part of their journey to a happier life!

Here is King with Duke in the background. King is the rescue mascot and teaches the new intakes the ropes while providing them positive reinforcements when they are facing something new, such as the farrier process. He's a 'been-there-done-that' kind of guy and has a heart of gold.

This is Bullet. He is the guardian of the donkeys and he loves them. It amazes me how well they get along, they often take dust baths and naps together. He works hard keeping things out of the pastures and has finally accepted the deer jumping the fences to graze.

The buffet bar finally opened. Axel is looking to see if I'm going to bring more.
