My goal as your trainer is to teach you and your family to speak the language of dogs and to provide you with all the tools you will need to build a high functioning relationship with your K-9 companion. This program is designed to challenge both the customer and their 4-legged BFF to learn to work together. Every member of the family that is old enough to handle the dog is encouraged to participa
te. Training a dog is not an easy task, but I will teach you what you need to know in order to accomplish your goals as a dog owner.

This is my parrot dog. He used to sit like this for as long as I’d let him back in the day. I absolutely love seeing my old pups years down the road. So if you’ve ever worked with me, please bring your pups out to say hi!!!

Moms been trying to get this to work for a year, and we finally got it done! Roll over is a tough ask for some dogs, but if you break the behavior down into smaller steps and put them together one by one, you can easily shape the behavior you’re looking for. Keep them winning, but keep challenging them with gradual increases in difficulty. It should be stressful to learn a new skill.

Seeing all of my past pups at the Canine Carnival brought back a lot of good memories... here's Monroe's puppy pictures from 7 years ago, and our reunion yesterday. She was such a fun dog to work with, and it was great to see her again all these years later. It goes so fast. She's still the same affectionate chowhound that she was back then. I guess not much has changed!

Are you their buddy or their parent?… you already answered the question.
You want to cuddle on the couch with your dog, but you have not taught your dog about personal boundaries with you and your guests. If your dog doesn’t know not to jump on you or your guests, you should not allow them to do it on the couch. Struggle through the training first, and enjoy the snuggles on the couch after that.
You cannot buddy your way to obedience. Be their leader first, pay them with friendship so your score stays balanced. It’s better to be a 2-2 than a 2-10!

For the owner of a reactive dog like Loki, going to the beach on a busy day was absolutely out of the question. Loki lunges and barks violently at just about everything… well… he used to anyways. I’m always amazed to see these moments, and I feel so blessed to be doing this.

“”We’re at the beach with my kids, he’s swimming and having fun and not going bonkers at everything and everyone…”
Today her dreams came true.

Belles face when I told her I had to go… I’ve been flooded with goldens lately… and I love it. Belle will be featured again soon! Super smart and determined to learn. Plus she loves belly rubs and tug and fetch so she’s easy to motivate. Stay tuned for Pupdates!

Beach day with Ol’ Lady.
Had some last minute cancellations today and took full advantage. I can’t help but consider how numbered these days are, as Ol’Lady is starting to struggle with the distance and she’s slowing down more and more. The inevitable heartbreak of tomorrow is well worth the companionship today. I’m lucky to have this Ol’Lady.

Pro Tip: Tones that go from low to high will trigger curiosity. If you want your dog to tilt their head for a photo, whistle from low to high. You can also use that tone to create arousal and get a snappier recall! Pair with backwards motion for best results.

If you could have seen who this dog was when we stared, you would not believe it was the same dog. This is the result of lots of hard work. It was a process to get here, but the difference is night and day. I’m so happy to see this little guy (and his mom) succeed. Another tough day at the office.

When you are working with a fearful and insecure dog, you gotta let them come to their own conclusions. This dog wouldn’t sit still when we first met. He was terrified of everything and everyone. Less than an hour later he was happily playing the training games with me. He didn’t even know “lay down” was a thing… look how happy he is to learn that skill. Learning boosts confidence. Teaching builds trust. You will need both areas of the relationship to be where the dog needs them to be in order to get over their obstacles. Be the leader worth following, and they will stop being afraid. This is what a lightbulb moment looks like.

Don’t have any Pupdates yet for today, so check out this golf swing instead. Missed shots…Sometimes you’re gonna miss the mark. Despite all the practice and planning, we are only humans, and humans make mistakes. You might leave that club face open and leave yourself vulnerable to the slice. Unfortunately there was a home on the receiving end of that mistake. A 3 degree difference in the attack was all that separated me from the fairway and an insurance claim. Luckily for me the homeowner was outside and laughed it off. She even threw my ball back to me. When the inevitable slice happens, don’t blame the TaylorMade. It’s not the clubs fault, it’s on you. Tee up again, close the club face and follow through. Try again until you hit that fairway! Underdstanding The Language of Dogs
My Basic Obedience Program is Designed to grow and foster a lifelong trust between the client and their 4-legged companion. Focusing on the “Relationship Based” approach to K9 Obedience Training allows me to remain fluid in my techniques, and cater each training plan to meet the needs of each individual customer. Whether you are a brand new puppy family with no idea where to start the training process, or an individual who needs a quick refresher on how to stop your dog from jumping all the time. Understanding K9 body language, and knowing how to effectively communicate with your dog are the foundational aspects of all obedience training. I started River Valley DOGS in order to help clients understand what their dog is trying to tell them. Once you can speak their language, there’s no limit to how far you can take their training. This program is meant to be a “K9 K-12” education for both the dog and you!
