Team Taught K9 Nose Work Class - Competition Focused!!
Terri Spaeth-Merrick, CNWI and Rebecca Dodson, ANWI are teaming up one night a week to co-teach an intermediate level competition-oriented K9 Nose Work class.
Two sets of eyes, two complimentary approaches to teaching, and two very experienced competition handlers will lead you in specifically planned classes to improve your trial handling skills, your K9 odor-behavior reading skills under pressure, and provide competition oriented searches to help your dog work through odor problems they might encounter in the competition setting. There will also be video provided for many of the searches and an outdoor video review night on the big screen at some point during the 8-week session.
Classes will take place on Thursday evenings from 6:30 pm to 8:00+/- pm from May 6th to June 24th (or May 14th to July 1st), and be held in the wider West Side/Cedar Hills, Portland, Oregon area at rotating locations, most likely all outdoors due to COVID.
The class will consist of 7 sessions of working your dog and 1 session of group video review in May and June 2021. Class size is limited to 4-5 students plus the two instructors who will also be running their dogs on the searches. The benefit of instructors running their dogs is that you will be able to watch very experienced handlers handling both beginning dogs and more experienced dogs working the same searches as your dogs will run.
We will be using typical NACSW strength odor for the searches, teams also competing in AKC and UKC are welcome but we will not be using the additional odors for those organizations in the searches nor will we be doing AKC Buried/Water searches or HD.
Dogs must have passed all three ORTs (Birch, Anise, Clove) or equivalent, and ideally at least have an NACSW NW1 or equivalent AKC/UKC title on the dog in the class or on a previous dog(s).
Participating dogs must be generally comfortable around other dogs as we will be working in public places that may have loose dogs in the vicinity on occasion, and the dog must be very comfortable around humans.
** Teams will be selected based upon experience level of the dog and handler to create a cohesive/complementary working group for this specific session. Future sessions may be offered for beginning and upper level teams, we will be keeping a wailist for future sessions.
Please sign-up if you are interested in getting on the class consideration list, we will be taking waitlist spots for future sessions.
