Sharing from Dog Friendly Pembrokeshire which I manage.

Many of you will know just how tough a time it is in the rescue world. Our friends at Greenacres Rescue are really struggling to meet urgent demand for dogs, cats and other animals needing help to find new homes. Many of these animals have extensive and expensive veterinary needs like Ariel the spaniel puppy born with 6 legs 🥲

Another anonymous donor has approached me wanting to help. This donor is willing to match all donations made between now and 14th October, up to a maximum of £1000 in total. Now is a great time to make your donation have double the impact.

Please mark your donation DFP Double.

We have been made aware of issues recently regarding the microchip database, Petlog following an upgrade to their system.

If you have any of your pets with microchip details registered with Petlog we advise you check the details recorded are correct, just in case.

⚡️ ELECTRICITY UPGRADE APPEAL ⚡️

Are you an animal lover? Appreciate what we do at Greenacres? Have we ever helped you? Or is the animal you love adopted from us? If so, please read on.....

Throughout our time at Greenacres we have written many appeals, requests, and pleas and many of these are centred around a particular animal or need, with emotive pictures visually bending our supporters to donate, but although this appeal may not carry the normal substance or pull on your heart strings with distressing imagery never has there been a more needy appeal, one that really is vital in the continued function of our work. In the not-too-distant future, we must address as issue that has plagued Greenacres for some time and finally this winter left us exhausted by a troublesome season, as with most UK establishments our energy demand increases in the winter, shorter days and colder nights ensures our need for electricity use skyrockets.

Electricity is something many of us take for granted but believe us it is soon apparent how much it is needed when the supply is unreliable and on occasions gone altogether! The site in which Greenacres operates currently has a standard, domestic supply not dissimilar to that of a regular household, but as you can imagine with over 150 animals in our care at any one time, the need for adequate lighting and heating to keep everyone well cared for is proving a little too taxing for this current system and this winter has been a tremendous struggle to get through each day without having electrical issues hindering our work, at its worst we had to isolate parts of the circuit to allow others to work more effectively.

We are extremely lucky we have a kind and helpful voluntary electrician that is willing to help solve these issues but on professional recommendation it has been advised that we upgrade our system to a three-phase electricity supply, and for this we would have to make a request to Western Power Distribution. Having contacted WPD they have confirmed that they can bring a three-phase electricity supply to the site, but it comes at the cost of £9369.00. The past year has been simply awful for us, with no shops or fundraising events we have relied solely on the generosity of our supporters to survive but sadly we cannot leave this issue unattended until more affluent times.

It is for that reason we ask again that you help us achieve this goal, without this upgrade it will be impossible to continue, and we must pursue our rescue mission. If you can please even spare just a few pounds it will bring us closer to our goal, the costs of the on-site changes will be kept to a minimum thanks to our kind electrician, so we need only to raise the funds to bring the supply on site. If you can find it in your heart to help this appeal it will make an extraordinary difference.

As promised here is some further advice about reporting a crime or suspicious activity.

The Personal Safety Focus group for Dog Owners has written this in association with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the National Charity for Personal Safety.

Safe -Dog Owners-
Experience something dodgy / Dog Theft,
know what to do

This information covers, when to call 999 or 101, reporting a crime, what to report, how to get a crime reference number, and how to follow up if action has been taken following your report.

Top tips in advance - have 999 and 101 on speed dial on your mobile so if you need to report something you can do so straight away.
Look up your local police forces website make a note of the e-mail address of the force control room [FCR] so you can report and send information by e-mail at the earliest opportunity.

Report incidents to the police ASAP. To keep your evidence intact and of value in case of prosecution speak with the police first [ i.e. before contacting friends and family via messages social media, group chat or Facebook].

When out with your dog, if possible, carry or wear a camera as [well as your fully charged phone].

Reporting Dog Theft & suspicious persons

If a crime is in progress dial 999.
If someone is face to face with you or you are in fear for your safety Dial 999

Non-emergency call 101 -
A non-emergency is for example suspicious activity- call 101 straight away, be aware it may take some time to get through....1 hour+. [Don’t forget FCR’s (Force Control Room) can be contacted via Email]. Be patient do not hang up your information is valuable in fighting dog theft.

Try to remain calm, by consciously trying to speak slowly, (under stress, it is easy to speak quickly and be harder for the listener to understand).
Remember be polite and professional to the point do not swear.

When reporting; -
Stick to facts, report what you saw, felt, smelt or heard.

A picture paints a thousand words.

One at a time, report the date, time and location [ Be as specific as possible]

Report the number of persons involved- When describing persons, detail is key, distinguishing features, scars, tattoos, clothing with logos.

If a vehicle is involved, give direction of travel of the vehicle along with a detailed description of occupants, make and model of vehicle, index number, identifying features, crash damage, logo’s etc.
Give the names, descriptions of and contact details of any witnesses.
When e-mailing your report, you can add photo attachments and you also have paper trail

Next - Request an incident / crime reference number.

Request at the time of your report to be updated by the police [ If operator declines, request Payroll number or request to speak with supervisor.].

Following up police actions on your report
If you do not receive update. Email your local Police force with your reference number. It is better to Email follow up requests, so you have an audit trail and to keep up phone lines open for others reporting crime.

If you wish to anonymously report information regarding Dog theft/ suspicious activity or any other crime you can contact Crime Stoppers:-

All about giving information to Crimestoppers.

ADMIN ANNOUNCEMENT
Behind the scenes I have been in contact with someone from the national personal safety campaign for dog owners and their dogs. They are working in association with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the national charity for personal safety.
Here is some useful advice: -
All dog owners are recommended to change their privacy settings from public to friends only.
Dog groups should become private groups. (Don’t worry DFP has always been a private group)
Groups should vet members - again DFP has always done this via joining questions and scanning profiles.
Our group photo can be seen by others searching for this group. I will therefore ensure that photos used don’t clearly show an easily recognisable location.
Various posts of vans people etc circulated tend to escalate anxieties and fear on one hand and increase awareness on the other. Legal opinion about such posts is that "a victim of crime should notify the police first and obtain a crime number, before posting on social media.”
Also “At no time are you allowed share posts accusing people of potential or actual thefts - firstly as these are often untrue and secondly as it could jeopardize any future criminal proceedings ". Wording is key here on whether a post actually makes an accusation
Any safety advice here will only include what is lawful. Personal alarms are lawful but other weapons suggested in posts I have deleted may not be lawful. You should be aware too that if anyone is overpowered by an attacker on any occasion, not just dog theft, a weapon can be targeted back on you.
I am obtaining advice for dog owners on when to call 999 or 101 and how to report suspicious circumstances and attempted dog thefts to the police.
We hope by raising peoples awareness of their personal safety they can take simple non agressive steps to reduce their chances of experiencing crime or a violent incident.
Let’s stay informed but try not to panic

ADVICE FROM PEMBROKESHIRE DOG WARDEN SALLY-ANN BLAND
There are many reports of strange vans/cars and strangers allegedly looking to steal our pets, what we all need to do is pull together as a community, keep a look out for our neighbours especially those who may be more vulnerable, our pooches are lifelines to many people so what is needed is, as in the name DFP let's be people friendly too. My advice to you all is....keep your dog attached to you at all times when out walking, don't leave them out of your sight, walk where there are others, near housing and in daylight or decent street lighting, take a mobile phone and if you become at all worried that someone seems to be watching you or stops and asks questions about your dogs call in to the nearest house and ask them to call the police. Do not tie your dog outside a shop for even a minute these people are very quick to grab a dog and vanish. When at home try not to leave your dog alone in the garden unless you are totally certain it is not just escape proof for your pooch but also break in proof!! If your dog sleeps outside put extra locks, sensor lighting and barriers that need to be moved and if possible cameras. Please do not feel silly to call the police with any worries, if you can get vehicle details or photos that will be a great help. If your dog does go missing/stolen please report to me and the police immediately, put on social media then go looking, do not give too many details on social media, all you need are the basics, a picture and where they went missing from. You can always find and message me on here or call me on 07557251669
Let's not panic but let's keep our pooches safe 🐕🦮🐕‍🦺🐩
