Belle passed away today. I'm glad I was there. It was her time.

Thank you all so much for all the love today!! She'll rest easy now and never have to feel pain again. 💔

02/07/2024

Very sadly, Belle has fallen very ill and has been hospitalized since Friday. She has had some mobility issues for a while now and has been on pain management treatment and specialized care from our vet since February. I was planning to bring her for X-rays this week on the front left leg that gives her the most issues, to check for hairline fractures or whatnot. Belle had other plans.

About a month ago I moved Belle into a different pen, a brand new one I built, along with Romeo and Bella, my OG King & Queen. They are by far the oldest, move the slowest, and also needed to be extra retired. The girls took a couple of days to adjust, then didn't really pay much mind to each other after, Romeo was pretty indifferent from the start. Belle got to enjoy making a new mud hole just for herself, found this great little fallen tree to lay up on along side with her pillow, and I put a sunshade over the spot for her.

Then, in the middle of last week, Belle stopped eating. I contacted New Bolton out in PA, who did such an amazing job with Harley earlier this year, and where I was going for Belle's Xrays this week. That is where she has been since Friday. Other than the mobility issues themselves, they have found a lot of comorbidities internally that has her very sick. The main issue right now is that she has a pyometra, which is an infection in the uterus, and there has not been much improvement as of yesterday, unfortunately. That's the first thing that needs to be tackled rn, and they are doing everything they can!

I am heading back out there today to see her, bring her all her favorite treats and snacks and strength and love that I can! Please please please keep her in your thoughts, pray to whatever God/alien/spirit you believe in, and send positive healing vibes to this beautiful Belle Belle so she can come home!!!

💔 R.I.P. Rose 💔

With an extremely heavy heart, I wanted to let everyone know that our beloved Rose has passed away. We lost Rose, aka Tinkerbell, sometime early Monday morning, before I found her passed during morning feed. It was a complete shock. She did not seem ill in any way, and all the animals in the herd and I are devastated.

Rose came here just over two years ago with her three "sisters." They were rescued from the Johnson Park Prison by tireless efforts of the humans that advocated for all of those animals there! For anyone who doesn't know about that place, here's a brief idea of the type of care they received there. Rose was named after Betty White's character from the Golden Girls because all of the records I received from their transfer stated they were all female's, four girls. Well, if you have followed along since they came here, you may notice "Dorothy the Dude" being used, and that is because one is, in fact, a Male! His Veterinary records state he is an "intact Female" when he is actually a "non-intact Male". These poor Alpaca's were there for 7 years. 7 years.

For those not familiar with having a 'herd' of animals, the extreme pain of the loss turns to panic very quickly. Especially with her not appearing sick at all, and it being so sudden, the emotions shift to fear for everyone else. Some illnesses, parasites, or communicable diseases can run through an entire herd of animals almost immediately. Typically, with any of those, the adage of "if one has it, they all do" applies. I haven't posted until now because I was trying to wait until I have some answers. She was brought to the State lab to have a necropsy performed, and arrangements were made for her to be cremated after, so I can bury her here. In the meantime, until we know what happened, everyone else is being checked, monitored on video, and watched extremely closely for any signs of anything at all. The State tests for any of those things first, so the longer I don't hear from them, the better. Better for everyone else, at least. Rest easy, Rose!!!

Throne of King Jesse

My mini donk Jesse was a true King in this world and will be forever missed! He deserved something epic, and I did my best to create that. These large stones were unearthed while digging his burial spot, I laid them all out and then built this by hand, and it's solid. I have spent a good amount of time sitting here with Jesse now, and I can feel his energy, and it helps bring some peace.

He who reigns within himself and rules passions, desires, and fears is more than a king. He is happiest, be he king or peasant, who finds peace in his home. There can be no failure to a man who has not lost his courage, his character, his self-respect, or his self-confidence. He is still a King.

RIP Jesseman, King of the Herd.

Jesse had one of the sweetest, kindest, gentlest souls I have ever experienced in my lifetime. Jesse was pure. Anyone who met him understands just how special he was. It has been well over a month now since he passed away, and we are still picking up the pieces and trying to get rolling into this new year.

Jesse came to Live Free Farm a little over 3 years ago, along with his newest buddy at that time, Chip the goat. When I learned about Jesse, I fell in love with the dude before even meeting! Chip came from someone else as a companion for Jesse, so neither would be alone at a new home, their forever home! They began what is known here as the "Herd", w," h is when this sanctuary really came to life and started becoming what it is. Because of Jesse.

Whenever anyone would ask me about the 'Farm' and the animals, it was usually followed with "I know you aren't suppsupposedhave favorites, but who would it be??" Jesse. I would always say Jesse. He was my Jesseman. He wasn't a super energetic mini donk, he didn't get zoomies, run around or ,ver seem too excited that much. He had the same personality type of "Eeyore", and I think we all loved him even more for it. It was soothing, it was calming, it was healing. It was needed, and he will be terribly missed.

On the morning of Thanksgiving Eve, I had Jesse's doc come out to the farm. I started to notice things seemed off with him in the days leading up to then, but that morning, I knew something was definitely wrong. She said the best thing for him was to get him to an equine hospital ER. Once there, we were unfortunately told it was the worst case scenario for his symptoms, and we were devasted to learn that Jesse was in end stage heart failure.

At that point, I was told it was essentially only a matter of time. There were medications and treatments we could give him that would help make him more comfortable and also to give him any chance of survival, at l. They told me I could administer them myself, just as well as at the Hospital could, and there was no hesitation that I was going to bring him home.
