Group training full session
Start to finish of a group training session
I’m still luring to teach intended position, I am not moving to them as I want them to learn sit command isn’t simply plopping down but presenting in position directly in front of me.
Halfway through I attempted a down but they don’t yet have the patience to down in a group. Distractions are a great way to test and proof commands and see what each dog needs in 1:1
This session is less than 2 minutes long. One reason being patience but also we protect their joints by not having them sit too long, and even as they grow when they are capable of 5-20min+ stays it will always be in down
Green has incredible focus and drive and I’m having her wait longer between rewards to increase that, and also giving her a larger portion to reward.
Now that they have mastered sit look and stay the reward is dispersed for eye contact and NOT for looking to my hand. A sit and looking anywhere but to the handler for direction is not rewarded because we want dogs that are engaged and pro active!
Hope you’re enjoying watching our fur babies grow and hopefully learning some helpful tips!
We’ve completed our session, I’ve given the terminal marker and Willa knows this means we’re all done here so she is leaving the area but the pups haven’t quite grasped this one yet so they are hoping if they do all the things they will be rewarded. Terminal markers will be important down the road so I’m not giving in, I’ve repeated the command and given the “you’re done working” gesture and also leaving the area to solidify that we’ve completed our work.
11 weeks old and 3 girls looking for homes!
We know marker (yes), sit, and look well. They down and stay during 1:1 sessions
Here we’re doing a group sit stay session, this is a great way to proof and finish commands. I’m rewarding frequently to increase engagement, during 1:1 we build patience and focus further by requiring a longer hold/ stay between rewards
Im luring to the intended position if needed and rewarding for eye contact to increase engagement. As you can see some have more focus than others. At the end you can see tan collar not quite understanding what I want from her, so to reduce frustration I return to an easier sit & look and reward
Puppy fever should be a valid work excuse 🐾
Here’s another one on nipping, German shepherds love and need to bite! The good news is you can inhibit and direct the behavior and get back on track to having a pleasant experience with your puppy!
These guys are 9 weeks old and the chewing has started! 3 reasons they chew or nip, and how you can respond to inhibit and direct the behavior before those jaws get stronger!
How much can they change in 2 weeks?
Marker training explained
There’s a place for consistency and there’s a place for inconsistency as well. With rewards, inconsistency (as shown in the video) keeps the dog engaged and focused.
When introducing the yes command there is ALWAYS a reward. Without reward the dog has no motivation.
Would you clock in to work not knowing if you’ll be paid? Likewise, pup needs to know he’ll be compensated!
The best motivator is food. Train when hungry, like right before a meal. I use small bits of real meat mixed with kibble to increase engagement
Socializing your 9 week old puppy
I know a lot of you are wanting to get your pup socialized- here is a great example of how you can to do that safely while building those foundational skills! They can watch and observe, they feel safe, you build trust, and you get a good training session in! See how simple this exercise is? Training isn’t a lot of work- it’s a lot of learning!
