As we move further into February you can see the cone like flowers of Banksia spinulosa in bloom along the top terrace of the Abbey Garden.

This Australian flower is commonly called the ‘Hairpin Banksia’. If you look closely at the way the stamens curl inwards you can see why!

These plants will form naturally dense and well shaped shrubs when given the space and light around them and prefer a light free draining soil. They will even cope well with colder weather and frosts.

As a member of the Protea family we grow a range of different Banksia species and varieties in the Abbey Garden, all with slightly different variations of this distinctive hair roller shaped flower!
