In 2019, we were introduced to Moon and her babies. She was so fearful and ferocious that even the Director, who has a habit of happily flopping up to ferals and animals she's been warned are reactive and demanding struggle snuggles, was afraid to approach her. Over time, her first foster got her to mellow out some, but it was really her palliative foster who truly brought her out of her shell.
Moon was diagnosed early on in our care as having aggressive breast cancer, and given 4-24 weeks to live. 4 years in her amazing foster mum's care, having a life of being doted upon and loved, mildly terrorised by her pit bull brothers, extended it by 3 more years than she was given. A few weeks ago, we learned that after 3 mastectomies, the cancer had metastasised to her lungs and that it would be a matter of weeks before it would be time for the Longest Ride. We gave her the gift of love, of a secure life, and she gave her foster the gift of companionship and the awesome experience of earning the trust of a feral cat so vicious she scared the unflappable. So today is a gift, a blessing. We got to say goodbye in a loving, gentle manner, and there will be no question as to whether we did the right thing.

Thank you Moon, and thank you so, so much Kaylie. We could not have asked for a better mama for Moon during her happiest years.

I am sad to say I have reached the end of the queue. In the last twelve years this has only happened once. The last time I went crazy with all the free time and painted every room and ceiling in my house until biz picked up again.
This time I'm going to work on reaching more people with my portrait info (http://www.ashleyreid.net) across social media. I'm also going to work on expanding products in the shop (http://www/shop.ashleyreid.net). I'm so happy that I created this side biz and that clients are able to purchase their pet's portrait on keepsakes that they can have with their morning coffee while wearing their pet on a hoodie.
Pet portraits created by AI or on sites where you simply submit a photo are less expensive and are becoming more popular. This concern becomes more acute considering that many artists depend on the small income they receive from their projects to support their livelihoods. Over the last 12 years I have painted over 1300 portraits. I have donated 10% to the animal org of my client's choice for every single one.
I like to think that the close collaboration between my clients and I lead to certain personal details and touches that you simply cannot get via a computer generated piece. My last portrait was a surprise memorial for a recently deceased pet. The client wanted a scenic background, but was unsure what to do. On a whim I searched the name of the dog + flowers and it turned out there was a geranium with the same name as the pet. So we did a backyard scene with that flower scattered throughout.
Until the queue gets going again I'll post funny pet memes, some past portraits, and other things. I am always available to chat with or answer questions. Thanks to all of my super repeat clients. I appreciate you and everyone who commissions a portrait of their furbabies. I truly believe I am doing what I was put here to do and I've loved every single minute of it. Please continue supporting artists and local small businesses.

Well…tonight’s event was a total bust. 💔

W***y was so excited to meet some new friends and show off his skills that he’s been working on. He has been purrfecting his clicker training to learn how to give high-fives. He paw-picked tonight’s door prizes and even made us pick up chocolate and snacks.

Unfortunately, we had multiple people cancel this afternoon and then the rest didn’t show up. 😿

W***y was left with all these nice things and nobody to give them to.

We host these events to raise money to continue to care for our amazing cats like W***y. Since we were asking for donations at the door, this fundraiser raised no funds for our feline friends.

We have really taken a financial hit the last few months taking on multiple cats with surprise complex medical issues.

We are left feeling sad and full of chocolate because W***y made us eat it so it wouldn’t go to waste.

We truly hope those that no-showed are okay.

We thank everyone for their continued support of our rescue. We hope you can make it to our next event. ❤️

Robin Goodfellow, a mink, may be the only animal currently here that I’m actually afraid of. He weighs less than a pound, but that doesn’t stop him from fiercely defending his territory and his caches of food.

A few weeks ago, I made the mistake of thinking that nitrile gloves— not bite-proof gloves— would be sufficient to clean up the bones and fur of his uneaten food, which he’d collected in a corner of his cage. You don’t need biteproof gloves just to pick up some shrimp tails and fish bones, right? Especially when the animal they belong to is smaller than a squirrel and asleep in a hammock?

Wrong. Robin woke up and chose violence, descending upon me in a fit of squeaky, unrestrained fury and leaving my hands looking like a mess of blood and torn gloves.

He got his shrimp tail back. He and I reached an agreement that he can continue keeping his little food scraps like a furry miniature dragon on a hoard of gold and that I’ll be armed with Kevlar gloves when I need to fight him for his p**p and for food that is actually rotten and stinky.

I have to admit, though, that I’m proud to see him grow up to be fierce and wild, the way nature intended. He’s certainly ready to hold his own against predators and against rival minks!

After some unexpected backlash last Tuesday, we were made aware that some social media users are offended by the image of a bobcat playing with a rainbow toy.

Here is another one. 🌈

Just a reminder with spring here and Easter near, many of these plants are given as gifts and should NEVER be where a cat can get near them.
