In 2019, we were introduced to Moon and her babies. She was so fearful and ferocious that even the Director, who has a habit of happily flopping up to ferals and animals she's been warned are reactive and demanding struggle snuggles, was afraid to approach her. Over time, her first foster got her to mellow out some, but it was really her palliative foster who truly brought her out of her shell.
Moon was diagnosed early on in our care as having aggressive breast cancer, and given 4-24 weeks to live. 4 years in her amazing foster mum's care, having a life of being doted upon and loved, mildly terrorised by her pit bull brothers, extended it by 3 more years than she was given. A few weeks ago, we learned that after 3 mastectomies, the cancer had metastasised to her lungs and that it would be a matter of weeks before it would be time for the Longest Ride. We gave her the gift of love, of a secure life, and she gave her foster the gift of companionship and the awesome experience of earning the trust of a feral cat so vicious she scared the unflappable. So today is a gift, a blessing. We got to say goodbye in a loving, gentle manner, and there will be no question as to whether we did the right thing.
Thank you Moon, and thank you so, so much Kaylie. We could not have asked for a better mama for Moon during her happiest years.
