As a dog walker, I confront the impacts of climate change on a daily basis. In the past couple of months, I've experienced scorching temperatures reaching the high 90s and exceeding 100 degrees. This has compelled me to prioritize the safety and comfort of my canine companions during these extreme conditions.
I offer a range of cooling techniques for your four-legged companions:
1. Plenty of shade breaks
2. Cold water breaks
3. Ice chips (yes, most dogs love to lick & chomp on cold ice)
4. Locate active sprinkler systems to get wet and cool off
5. Encourage your dog to lay down on wet grass to cool off
6. Shorten the walk
7. Incorporate a cool car ride - this is very stimulating
8. Take your pup to a local creek, pond, or lake
9. Take your pup to a nearby shaded neighborhood or hiking trail
10. Dip their paws into cool water (if the dog is comfortable with this)
11. Offer playtime and enrichment activities indoors with air conditioning
