From contact with other animals to exploring the great outdoors, our pets have plenty of opportunities to pick up nasty parasites daily.

Parasites can negatively affect pets' and humans' health, so it is important to ensure your pet is protected against them.

Parasites are a common occurrence in the UK, and our pets are particularly vulnerable to them. Some of the most prevalent parasites found here are:

🦟 Ticks: Tick bites can pass on diseases such as Lymes Disease and cause allergic reactions or infections at the site of the bite.

🐛 Worms: There is a wide variety of worms, such as tapeworms, roundworms, heartworms, whipworms, and hookworms.

🐛Lungworm: Lungworms are potentially deadly parasites carried by foxes, slugs and snails.

🕷️ Fleas: Fleas affect dogs and cats and can be seen all year round. Signs that your pet may be suffering from fleas include itching, scratching and licking. You may also see 'flea dirt' – tiny dark specks that look a little like grains of soil and go red when wet.

😺 Today, in England, it is a compulsory requirement to microchip your cat before it reaches the age of 20 weeks.

If your cat is older than 20 weeks and is not microchipped, book an appointment to have one implanted.

If your cat is already microchipped, the law also requires that the details associated with the chip be up to date, so please check that your pet's microchip details are up to date.

Did you know? The hot summer months create an increase in toxic blue-green algae across the UK.

This may appear as green or greenish-brown scum or foam on the water surface and contains toxins harmful to animals. It is not actually an algae but an accumulation of cyanobacteria. Dogs often swallow it by drinking water from an affected lake, river, or pond or by licking their fur after swimming. If you think blue-green algae is present, do not let your dog near it.

Unfortunately, the toxins can cause severe liver damage and can ultimately be fatal. There are currently no known preventative medicines, and prompt veterinary treatment is essential to ensure any chance of recovery.

😺 Don't chip away at your cat's safety!

In a week, it will become compulsory for all cats to have a microchip. Cats must be microchipped before they turn 20 weeks old, and their owner's contact information must be accurately maintained in a designated pet microchipping registry.

Owners who fail to comply with this regulation will have 21 days to implant a microchip, or they may be subjected to a fine of up to £500.

If your cat has not yet been microchipped, book an appointment today. Microchipping increases the likelihood of being reunited with your cat if it becomes lost and provides a permanent and reliable method of pet identification.

👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ Student Veterinary Nurses are working towards completing a qualification with a college or a university to become Registered Veterinary Nurses. While training, our students enrol in the RCVS and complete practical training.

Practical experience is a vital part of veterinary nurse training for our students. Our practice team supports them, providing supervision and guidance to assist them with developing their knowledge and clinical skills. This experience, alongside their qualification, prepares them to complete the roles that a Registered Veterinary Nurse undertakes.

When aspiring to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), you have two distinct paths to choose from. You can either pursue a vocational (diploma) route, which offers an on-the-job training option. You can also complete a higher education (degree) route, which provides you with the opportunity to experience university life whilst training. Both routes lead to registration as a veterinary nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

We encourage progression and growth and enjoy celebrating our Student Veterinary Nurses when they graduate and become a Registered Veterinary Nurse. 💚

Adders are warming up... 🐍

☀️ With the weather warming up, it’s a timely moment to remind all dog owners to be aware of adders, the UK’s only native poisonous snake. Adders hibernate over the winter and emerge during the spring, putting dogs at increased risk during the summer months when the weather is generally warmer.

Adders only tend to bite in self-defence, for instance, when they are stepped on accidentally or disturbed by an inquisitive dog. However, when they do, bites can be dangerous as they can induce lameness, vomiting, and changes to the heartbeat, blood pressure, and breathing rate.

They are typically found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands, and woodland edges, although not limited to these environments.

Visually, bites typically result in dark-coloured swelling that can quickly become severe. If your dog has been bitten by an adder, please get in touch with us or your nearest vet immediately.

As humans, we fret around the buzzing noise when a bee comes close; however, an inquisitive pet may seek to investigate and, as a result, could get stung. Pets seem to be fascinated by bees and wasps and can be stung when trying to play with them after rolling in the grass, rummaging in the garden or disturbing a nest.

Commonly, most stings will cause your pet some irritation and some pain, depending on where your pet has been stung and if they have been stung before. In some instances, there can be a lot of swelling, and they may continually scratch the stung area, which can result in fur loss. If your pet shows any of the following symptoms, they could have been stung:

🐝 Drooling
🐝 Whining
🐝 Swelling
🐝 Pawing at the face or mouth
🐝Biting at the site of the sting
🐝Holding up their paw (if that is where they have been stung)

If your pet has been stung near their mouth or nose, you should contact us immediately.

Meet Luna. 💚 Luna came to our Tewkesbury clinic to see our lovely Vet, Sarah after Luna’s owners noticed a bad smell coming from her mouth for a few days. Sarah had a good examination of Luna and could see a small stick lodged at the roof of Luna’s mouth. 😧 Here’s a video of our brilliant Vet Nurse, Lauren holding Luna while Sarah retrieved the stick using some forceps. 👏🏻 Luna was so brave and received lots of fuss from the team. Fantastic job team!💚

This is the very lovely Nigel. 🐱 Nigel loved receiving post-op cuddles and attention from our Patient Care Assistant, Courtney after being neutered at our Tewkesbury clinic. 💚💚 The Vets can be a scary place for your furry friends especially for cats. Our team work very hard to ensure they are comfortable and happy while they stay with us to help reduce anxiety and stress. This can be by human interaction, toy enrichment, pheromones (Feliway plug-ins) and sometimes isolation if other animals cause stress. 💚💚💚

Here is our Vet, Sarah and Veterinary Nurse Hannah retrieving a grass seed we found in this poor dog's ear! 🌿🍃 This lovely dog came in to see us as she kept shaking her head after she had been running around the fields. We had a look down her ear and could see a lovely grass seed. 🌿 As it was so close to her ear drum it was in her best interest to retrieve this pesky grass seed under sedation to help with any discomfort. What a brave girl 💚💚💚

The lovely Rex came to our Cheltenham clinic to be castrated. 💚 🐰 Unlike cats and dogs, rabbits do not need to be starved before an operation and it is vital that they eat before the surgery and after reduce the risk of gut stasis (the slowing down or stopping of movement through the digestive tract). This is a little video of our lovely Veterinary Nurse, Georgia feeding Rex recovery food after his surgery. Isn’t he adorable 🥰?
