The solo captivity of elephants, who are truly social creatures, kept apart from their mothers or babies, for the sole entertainment of humans is despicable and must end. These animals can live a long, long time, many of them in isolated cages without the feeling of grass underfoot or sunshine on their backs. It’s hard for me to imagine the degree of cruelty present in their handlers and zoo officials, who know better, to deny them their essential freedom for the benefit of the all mighty dollar. People with a shred of compassion should rise up in unity and demand these poor, innocent animals are freed from their captivity. And of course, it’s not just elephants..
When you look at this image, what do you see?
We see trauma.
Fear.
Longing for their mothers, who are not there (and have possibly been killed), so any physical contact will do.
We see human entitlement.
We see an end to their lives as elephants and the beginning of their lives on display.
We believe one of the elephants in this photo is Patty, who, a century later, remains in captivity in the Bronx Zoo's “Wild Asia Monorail” elephant exhibit. In her time there, she lost her son before his second birthday, all her elephant companions, and of course, her freedom, all to stand on a patch of dirt for 50 years while the monorail cars pass by and a tour guide shares basic facts about elephants.
Elephants are deeply social beings who form lifelong bonds and need herds to thrive. Studies show captive elephants experience brain damage because they’re confined to small, barren environments. In sanctuaries, elephants with traumatic histories can heal and thrive, regaining their peace, dignity, and freedom to roam after years of being on display.
The story of Happy, the other elephant held alone in captivity in the Bronx Zoo, is well known because of our historic court case on her behalf (filed at a time when she was the only elephant held alone in the exhibit). Patty's is less well known. Please help us create an by sharing Patty's story, and stay tuned for updates on , a new bill that would end elephant captivity in New York City for good. ⚖️🙌
