Looking for a fun game to play with your pup this weekend?
Have a pup who loves to play fetch but doesn't let go of the ball when they bring it back?
Here's a fun game to play with your pup that will build trust in your relationship, confidence in your pup and it's a lot of fun to play!

How to Play:
1. Throw one ball out. Keep the other ball behind your back.
2. As your pup gets close to you, show the other ball. Your pup should release the one in his/her mouth. If not, animate the other ball to build desire for it.
3. As they drop the ball, say "Switch" and throw the other ball.
4. Repeat.

Troubleshooting:
* If your pup doesn't bring back the ball, you threw it too far or the pup is not in the mood to play fetch. That's ok. Get the ball from your pup and play another game putting these away. Keep these balls only for the purpose of playing Switch.
* If your pup drops it before he/she gets to you, ensure the second ball is behind your back so they know to come to you for the game to continue.
* Timing of "Switch": wait for your pup to come to you, call them if you need to. As they approach and are within the distance you'd like them to be, show them the second ball. This should excite them to want to drop the first ball. If they do not, animate the ball, make it exciting so you build desire. As they drop the first ball, say "Switch" then throw the ball.

Have fun! There is no pressure in game-based training.
Start with short distances.
Build the desire.
And have lots of fun!

Don't have time for a training schedule? Need help with questions or challenges that arise with your fur baby? The Retainer-Based Training may be just the fit for you with private access directly to me.

I love to work with individuals who are keen to help transform their relationship with their pup but don’t want to be on a fixed training schedule. Instead, they would like to work with their pup on their schedule while having the flexibility to get more coaching when they need it and less when they don’t.

This training is very personalized and private and features phone, text, and video access to me. If you live in the area, in-person training can be added as part of our work together 🐾

It is beyond exciting and heartwarming to be working with Tucker and his new family! He was part of our lives a year ago and ended up having to be rehomed. As fate would have it, the Universe brought us back together by chance and I am so happy to have been given, what feels like a second chance with him.

He is doing so well! Responding to all of the games we are playing as his training. He’s become less reactive and even friendly with other dogs.
He is learning calmness and manners and is truly becoming the amazing pup we know he is at his core.

We are creating what is possible!

Welcome back into my life sweet Tucker! I love you buddy!!

🐾 It’s so good to give your pups, no matter their age, activities that help them solve puzzles, let them use their innate senses especially scent, and give them enriching exercises that work their brain and build their confidence.

➡️ What enrichment toy does your pup prefer? Post on the comments as it might inspire others to try it with their pup!

Want to have calmness when you have more than one dog in your household or on walks? Teach them the "Name Game".

1. Reward your pup(s) for calmness when they wait their turn.
2. Treat after you have said their name.
3. If one or more pup(s) butt(s) in or causes a disruption, remove your hand, wait for calmness, and then try again.

It may take a few tries but you can do it, and so can your pups!

This is what is possible!

FULFILMENT & ENRICHMENT GAMES USING BOXES

If you haven't discarded all the boxes from the holidays, keep a few for your pup's enrichment. These are easy games to play with your pup that will provide them with both mental stimulation and fulfill their natural instincts to sniff, hunt and find.

1. Find It! Place a few boxes scattered across the floor and hide treats or kibble in them, around them, and underneath them. Let your pup use his/her powerful scent to hunt for the treats.

2. Follow Me! Place the boxes (you can start with two) in a straight line a few feet apart and lure your pup around each box using a treat or kibble, or favourite toy. Use a lot of praise when your pup goes around each box to build their confidence and ability to follow your lead.

3. Play the memory game! Place a toy, kibble or a treat under one box and add one, two or three boxes. Have your pup tell you which box the prize is under using their sense of visual recall and/or scent. Praise your pup as he/she gets closer to the correct box if they are new to the game.

4. Dig away! Place scrunched up paper into an empty box. Add your pup's favourite treats, kibble or toy(s) into the box and ask your pup to find it. Let your pup dig away during it's search as it rummages through the paper.

5. Through the Tunnel: This game may be harder for a pup that doesn't have a lot of confidence around new objects. You can start slow with a small box that will allow your pup to walk through, depending on their size. You can start by placing treats, kibble or their favourite to near the opening of the box, and slowly adding treats to the inside of the box, building your pup's confidence to walk into the box on their own, and eventually through it. This is mentally challenging and a great way to build your pup's confidence.

Have fun and be creative! Your pup will love you for it!

* NOTE: If your pup gets frustrated, loses interest or just doesn't want to play, try something else or end the play session. Start with short play sessions, 2-3 minutes and build upon it as your pup builds his/her confidence and learns to enjoy playing problem-solving games.

Our pups are adventurous, curious and full of energy. They also require an environment and activities that bring their very active brains back to a quiet state. Are you working on calmness with your pup, no matter its age?

Here are some suggestions to help your pup learn that calmness is good:

* Set up a bed, mat, crate where your pup can rest and let them know that they are a good pup when they go there on their own.

* Reduce activity in your home and in their environment so they can learn that to be calm and quiet is a good thing.

* Do low-energy activities with your pup like the Box Game, or a food puzzle, or a scent game where hide their kibble and they find it in different places, hidden in a muffin tin, or in a towel, for example.

* Dim the lights, play soft music and bring the energy down in your home after a specific time every day. Let your pup learn that it's "energy down" time.

* After every play session, bring the energy down with your pup. Sit quietly with them. Or allow them to chew a Kong, a bone, or something that brings their energy down and keeps them quiet.

What other things do you do to bring your pup's energy down after a high energy activity or during a specific part of your day? Post in the comments if you'd like to share.

Remember, just as it's important to stimulate your dog physically and mentally, it's important that they learn to bring their energy down with your help and on their own.

You may feel like you can continue to do things on our own thinking it will get better, that it will improve. But sometimes we just know that there’s just that one thing, that one piece that can make things better.
If you’re stumbling with your pup, reach out to me. Let’s discuss what you have been doing and see what you can do to start to improve.
It does not have to be a long road ahead. It’s just one step, one step at a time.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Progress Not Perfection

This is Toby and Gus. Toby, the black German Shepherd Mix, is our fearful dog that we fostered and adopted three years ago. Gus is a foster puppy that was born in our care last November that we adopted.
Toby was so fearful when he came into our care that he didn't know how to "be" with us, nor did he know how to "be" a happy, well-balanced dog.

Often while we got to know him we wondered if he'd ever be a happy dog again.

What we had to remind ourselves of is that it was not about perfection, or "training".

** It was about helping him to feel safe.
** He didn't need to feel loved. He just needed to feel safe.
** With that in place, he was able to start trusting us.
** He was able to start opening up his world, the world around him, to explore, little by little, and "be" a dog again, one that was not living in constant fear.

And yes, eventually, he opened himself to love.

Because he could trust.
Because he was safe.
Because he could be himself, fear and all.

No matter where you are with your pup, remember that anything is possible if you focus on progress, not perfection.

It all started with Mia’s Wish

On June 28th, 2019, our beloved Mia took her last breath and crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We had been fostering our first rescue at the time and Blue, now known as Loki, was adopted the day after Mia’s passing.

We were devastated and heartbroken. Mia was 11 1/2 and she left behind two other pack members, Jayda and Koda, her Siberian Husky siblings. We were all grieving so very much.

A week later, the local rescue that we were working with asked if we would take in an 8 week old puppy from Iqaluit. We weren’t sure we could do it but after seeing her beautiful face, we said yes, and Mia’s Wish truly began.

For the next two weeks, Luna, a Corgi/Husky mix female, softened our grief and helped us to love again in a whole new way. She brought laughter, love and fun in a home that was saddened by Mia’s passing.
