This is why we rescue.
After hours and days of research, this is what I found out that's happening to our horses. They count on rescues and donations to help save them for a better life then what they deserve being sent to slaughter and going through a cruel death.
Each year thousands and thousands of good riding, kids, racing, pregnant mares, 8 mth + old babies and wild horses are crammed in shipping trucks for hours and hours and some for days with no water or food., heading to Mexico or Canada to get slaughtered. Many getting trampled ending up with broken legs, eyes busted open, mares giving birth from the stress, even death. They are unloaded at the slaughter plants and have to endure the pain with no medical treatment.
Ponies and minis are sent to zoos for lion and tigers because they require high protein in there diets. Yes other meat can provide that but because horse meat has more protein and iron, less fat cholesterol and sodium, which provides more nutrition for them. A lot of the zoos have quit feeding horse meat, but so many through out still do.
When people think horses won't ship because they are to thin, cut up, damaged, small, pregnant etc. Those are the ones called "skinners" and there hides are used for leather or other body parts that can be salvageable.
Cordovan is a equine (horse) leather made from the flat connective tissue hide on the rump (rear quarters) of a horse. Its used to make high priced dress shoes, wallets and watch straps overseas.
Donkeys are being crammed for long hauls with out food and water to China. About a 1/4 of them dyeing along the way. There hides are used to make gelatin for Chinese medicine called "Ejiao". Because of high demand for donkey hides prices are going up and our donkeys are starting to deplete. They are slow to reproduce.
Kill buyers are now starting to outbid private homes and rescues for healthier fatter horses to meet there shipping quotas for meat. The more they weigh the higher the pound paid.
