This is the photo of Penny as a puppy that stole my heart. She's been a LOT to deal with due to her anxiety disorder (and probable brain injury), but she's still this adorable. And she still tends to sleep with an eye open - to keep herself safe I suppose.

Can a dog have autism? Penny has many of the characteristics of a human with autism. Anyone else have a story about your dog that seems to have autistic characteristics? For our Penny, some of the symptoms are that she can't handle noise, is easily over-stimulated, lacks an awareness of physical boundaries (bumps into the other dogs and when they cue her with a yelp/bark, she is clueless), and has major anxiety if anything changes in her environment. Sleepy Penny. It's really important for a feral dog to have a routine. Penny eats twice a day at pretty much the same time and same place (7am and 6pm). She loves to chew on a Kong late morning, when she's given her space so she can de-stimulate as she has a tendency to get over-stimulated and needs to be by herself for a little while. At bedtime she has a stuffed toy we stuff little treats in and she takes this to her own bedroom, where she sleeps alone because she needs that time to decompress from the noises, lights, other dogs, etc. Penny gets easily over stimulated; we are working on this but she will always be different neurologically than most dogs. It's a bit like having a child who has autism.

So, Penny has lived with us for one year now. We celebrated with a little bit of a conversation. She has come so far compared to day one, when she was so afraid of everything and huddled in a corner most of the time, outside of eating/drinking and going to the bathroom (not outside, inside near the corner where she huddled). There is so much to say about her progress. She makes me laugh every day with the new things she does (and says - yes, sometimes she seems to even be talking). So, enjoy this video.
